BA DEP Licensing requirements

Hi all,

I understand there is a recruitment freeze on, but looking at PPJN I see that to be considered for Long Haul entry you need 2000 hours TT and 1000 on a heavy type, and an ATPL. It does not state an ATPL(f) would be acceptable.

My airline has a policy of ensuring we have a licence from a certain JAA member state and is now refusing to sign off ATPL upgrades until we have a license from said state. I am attempting to delay changing over but it's inevitable I think (I like my new CAA licence) and so thus we come to the crux of the matter...

In peoples learned experience would consideration be given to a potential pilot with ATPL(f), but just waiting for the paperwork to be done to unfreeze it? This is something i'm mulling over, evidently only going to be a factor if they start recruitment again!

If you have the hours they require: 2000TT, 1000 jet, then you will have met the requirements to unfreeze the (f)ATPL: 1500TT, 500 multicrew.

Ahh excellent, I didn't realise it was done on hours to unfreeze, I thought they might think Blue wasn't good enough

Thanks!

In addition to the hours requirements, you will also need to take a Licence Skills Test before you can unfreeze your ATPL. This can be done at your next LPC in the sim but you must make sure you book an LST in advance, rather than just an LPC. It's pretty much the same thing but you'll have some raw data flying to do. Possibly just a raw data single-engine ILS.

And that's where the problem with my operator kicks in - i'm not allowed to sit an LST to unfreeze my ATPL unless I have a licence issued by a different JAA state.

To be pedantic its an ATPL skills test you will need not a LST. It can be done at the same time as a LPC and involves a raw data ILS in addition to the LPC excercises and the filling in of the skills test form.

I was in the same situation as you 3 years ago. Had the blue one, but plenty of hours, my complany at the time would not let me upgrade my licence, until i was doing a command upgrade for them.....the result was me booking a sim, TRE and getting my friend in the other seat. All worked out in the end. But if you want a DEP long haul position then you need the green book on the day you join.

Thanks for the feedback, i'd rather pay for a sim for 4 hours and get a buddy onboard than have to replace my licence with something white and not green!

I shall investigate further, I have ages until the recruitment thaws anyway i think

You need to have an ATPL because when the skipper is on rest and you are in the RHS you must have a qualification which is equal to his, hence an unfrozen ATPL.

lol you DO know the price difference between changing to the IAA and having to rent a sim and TRE for 4 hours??

BA would pay to change your licence back to the CAA when you joined anyway.....

Horgy, was in the same position as you. Am with the same said carrier that you mention, for arguments sake, lets call them Ryanair. Get the IAA Licence and upgarde it to ATPL. Job done, you have the Licence required for BA DEP Long Haul. IF you are then lucky enough to jump through the hoops at BA and get an offer, I am reliably informed that BA would indeed cover the cost of transferring it back to a CAA Licence. The cost of the initial transfer to the IAA costs around £200. The cost for a SIM, a TRE and hire a Friend for the day I don't have a clue but we must be talking £1k+.
Having been in your position, it's a no brainer - get the Irish Licence.
