Wasn't BALPA's plan to get all 3 divisions out at the same time, so that they could't cover each individual strike?

Would love to work and undermine the strike of my colleagues...but sadly I feel I might not be able to clear my ears that day.....better stay in bed.

But what if mainline are called in to break a Baby strike? I think, by law, you have to do it. The thought of it alone would make me too ill to work!
If mainline were to release sufficient aircraft and crews to cover baby flying, their own schedule would fall apart. They don't have enough pilots to do their own work, let alone anyone else's!

Tick, tick, tick

As I understand it when BALPA and the Company get together for discussions one of the first items on the agenda will be for both parties to agree to extend the period for industrial action from 28 to 56 days. This takes away the time pressure for both sides to reach an agreement in an unrealistic time frame.

Of course the Company can refuse this request but then they really would be sprinting towards the cliff edge.

By my calculations BALPA can wait until 6th Sept to give the Company 7 days notice of a strike in all 3 divisions. Hopefully the aroma of coffee will have percolated to the higher echelons of DH by then.

Likewise, no chance of Baby covering Mainline/Regional flights as Baby pilots are spread as thin as butter on BR sandwich.

What a splendid idea. Flog baby to the Ryans and mainline to Virgin. But seriously, I hope BALPA co-ordinate any industrial action to prevent the company using each division to cover any action in the other. The whole bmi group is a mess and needs a massive overhaul starting with the top of the tree. It's such a shame that an airline with such a significant presence at LHR can make such a cock-up of it all!

The ground managers at bmi are going around telling their staff that the bmi pilots are not going on strike now and that if they (the ground staff) do then they'll all be sold-out to third-party handling agents within six months. So it appears the lies and threats continue! I wish they would just tell the truth as to what is actually happening. As far as I'm aware the bmi mainline pilots voted overwhelmingly (89% in favour) for industrial action and that right will be exercised shortly if the company do not come to their senses during the current negotiations...

True. Meetings are in progress but strike action is still a very real possibility.

I have heard rumours that the baby strike is off. Can someone confirm this or is this just a bad news forum?

We've now missed the deadline for giving 7 days notice to Mgmt before the end of the 28 period following the vote.

Most likely outcome of meeting yesterday (save a resolution to this mess) is a mutual decision to extend that 28 day period.

It would not be bad news at all if the strikes were called off, that would mean that the unions had found an agreeable compromise with management and we can all move on without hurting our business any more.

Thumbs up bmiBaby Strike Action CALLED OFF

BALPA today announced that due to headway made during negotiations with management, bmiBaby will not be taking strike action.

Jim McAuslan (General Secretary) stated that "... we will not be triggering the stike ballot there [bmiBaby], the authority for which expired last night ..."

BALPA also stated that they were aware the threat of strike action was affecting passenger bookings ...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think this is the best possible outcome !

The company have realised how damaging a strike could be, and are negotiating !! We (the pilots) have managed to make our point without any stopages !!!

Now, lets get on with what we do best - providing a first rate air transport service to our paying passengers ...

I have reason to suspect that you are neither a pilot, nor employed by bmi...

Gary,

I'm a BHX based skipper, flew this morning in fact ...
Like most of us, I'm glad it never went to strike action !

You've obviously got a problem with something I said - I thought it was all very positive - whats the problem ?

Now at this stage I don't know what these achievements are, but it sounds positive.

I would just like to say that now if things improve, those freeloaders, cowards and those who spinelessly caved in and those that have not joined balpa for this and those that have objected to us uniting into one voice in order to achieve something and those that were writing utter tosh on these pages against a strike - should feel utterly ashamed.

It was clear from the start that in order to achieve anything, we had to threaten the management.

I hope the freeloaders will appreciate the members achievements in this battle and go forth and reflect on their weakness and if there's a next time, they'll know which way to vote.

Miss Man,

I agree with your general sentiments, (I am a BALPA member who voted Yes to action), HOWEVER, I cannot bring myself to condemn any of my colleagues who may have voted no.

Whether or not you voted yes/no is down to the stage of your career, how well you know the company, whether you've been jobless in the past ..etc..

Althought the company has not acted very well throughout this scenario, neither, in my opinion, has BALPA.

With regard to your comment about 'next time' , if there is another confrontation next year (and there may well be), pilots will vote based on what the company and BALPA have to say about THAT confrontation, not the last one. This, I believe, is the way it should be ...

It would seem that common sense has at last prevailed and the hot heads who were spoiling for a strike will not (hopefully) get their way.Strikes do not benefit either side and always leave a bad taste in the mouth, sensible discussion is the only way to get a long lasting solution to the legitimate issues that caused this situation, while it is true that threats of action seem to have convinced the management that they cannot afford to ignore the issues that the pilot workforce have raised,it is also true to say that many of us cannot afford to lose our jobs if the airline were to fold due to strikes actually taking place. It would be easy to say that talk of the company going down the tubes is fanciful BS or "management spin" but in an industry like ours that has lurched from one downturn or crisis to another in the past few years I would not like to bet my pension on it not happening, let us now hope that the same common sense will be applied by both sides in Regional and Mainline and that we all work together on the task of getting the company back on track, profitable and back to being the decent employer it used to be
