Yes, I did try it and worked very well for me. I lost 25lbs and it has stayed off, even though I have not been on the diet for about two years now.
The one I tried is called the heart-bypass diet/Grapefruit diet. No I didn't have heart problems, I just wanted to lose weight.
Really simple:
Breakfast; one egg cooked any way you want, two strips of bacon and a half a grapefruit or 6oz. glass of grapefruit juice.
All other meals, all the meat you want, cooked anyway you want, with a glass of grapefruit juice.
Most important rule: Do not eat anything white, bread, rice, potatoes, any fruit, etc.
Every ten days you can eat anything you like for two days.
I liked it and it worked for me.
Oh yeah, you can still drink beer!

I've been on a Low/No Carb diet for the last 10 years - out of choice...it certainly does me no harm but a doctor friend recently advised me to increase my intake of fat as eating mainly chicken and vegetables down in Africa I was definately lacking.
Although keeping you 'trim' it does not in my opinion negate the need for regular exercise...

To the nice lady that e-mailed me. I cannot e-mail you back, because my laptop has a virus and when I e-mail anybody the virus goes with the e-mail. Sorry, I should have it fixed next week.
The bottom line is, don't eat anything white. And yes no fruit, fruit juice is ok, don't ask me why. All the beef, pork, chicken and fish you want, cooked anyway you want. It really works!
Remember, evey ten days you can eat anything, within reason, you want for two days. Your body still needs some carbs.
PS. White onions are out, but you can eat red onions, go figure.

Hello
The best & only way to diet is to burn more calories then you eat. Therefore cut out the crap and buy a ststionary bike use it for 30mins every other morning and the fat will fall off. (empty stomach)
Maybe people do lose weight on the low carb thing , but I think it seems more when they look in the mirror only because the muscle is depleted of (me thinks) glycogen which gives you energy.
Then again it comes down to what suits you best, if your in a very physical job and train I dont think the low carb diet is for you.
Hoodwink

Its great. I lost 14 kilos in 8 weeks. My wife lost 12kilos. We did eat fruit thou. For two months we did not eat Pasta, (did you ever see a skinny Italian?), rice, potato, bread,NO dairy foods, MUST take Calcium tablets, MUST take a Mega Vitamin tablet each day. If you cannot live without milk in coffee or tea, only use skim milk. Eat: lots of fish, chicken, Beef, (Cut off fat) eggs, vegetables, NO peas, (don't ask me why) drink water, red wine (good for your heart) white wine, keep the beer to a limit thou. And try to get in at least 40 mins of exercise a day. Swimming, jogging, ETC. You will feel great...

I lost 25 lbs on a carbohydrate-rich diet!
I have friends that have lost large amounts of weight on carbohydrate-free diets
I have other friends who have lost weight on food-combining diets.
IMHO within reason, it is simply being on the diet that gives you the most beneficial effects. The actual type of diet does not make much difference. You get the benefit simply from the rigid eating pattern and thinking about food before you eat it - if it's highly calorific, it's not going to be great for you, if on the other hand it's low-calorie and not highly refined, it's generally going to be OK for you.
Here's my five-point diet:
1. Reduce red and white meat intake, replace with Quorn, soya, fish and beans.
2. Eliminate intake of bakery food (bread, cakes, biscuits etc.)
3. Eliminate intake of high-calorie sweet things (chocolate, sweets, candy etc.)
4. Reduce intake of dairy products - only have low-fat yoghurt, cottage cheese and a small amount of milk in tea and coffee.
5. Fill the gaps with fruit and vegetables
Another great trick is to look at the statutory label on food (UK) - the one that says how much energy it has per 100g. As rule of thumb aim only to eat food that has around 100 calories per 100g. That way you will fill up before you can eat too many calories.

One of the ones that work is called the 'Atkins Diet.' There is a book - The Dr Atkins Diet (~£7 from WH Smiths in the UK) - that explains it all. There is a lot of philosophical claims, but the diet works, losing about 2kg/wk.
My basic explanation is that the body uses 1 fuel only, glucose which it puts into the Krebs cycle and produces all the energy it needs. To get the glucose, it converts, in order: sugars, carbohydrates, fats then proteins. Don't give it the 1st 2 and it use the body's fat.
The diet boils down to any amount of meat, cheese, fish, eggs and butter (and cream/mayo!) you want plus a small plate of green salad, 4 oz off steamed veg per day and a vitamin tablet. It's not the most balanced of diets, but it works. Once I get down to my target weight, I revert to a more balanced, normal diet, but don't generally put it back on - christmas and holidays excepted.
I do bacon + eggs for b'fast, cheese + tuna mayo salad for lunch and meat veg and cheese for dinner.
It works, but best read the book.
Good luck!

Sorry guys - I have heard all sorts of CRAP about diets (usually during the more boring parts of long-haul flights), and people are all too ready believe all sorts of duff gen if they like what they're hearing - but there are two ways to lose weight and two ways only;
1 - eat less
2 - do more.
That is it. In fact that is ALL of it.
You can carry on all you like about what makes up the diet (and that may be important if you have various medical conditions), however the bottom line is that if you want to lose weight you must eat less or do more! The only proviso is that the diet must be reasonably balanced (and most people's are - don't get me started on vitamin supplementation).
Here endeth the lesson.
(BTW In addition to my ATPL I also have post-graduate education in nutrition)

Be very carefull taking the advice that some people are handing out here.
The low carb diet works in two ways - initially the diet causes you to become very dehydrated. Your body loses a lot of water and since water makes up 70% (?) of your body weight, the weight comes off quickly. Secondly, eating meat all the time becomes boring, and for that reason you are likely to eat less.
These two facts are the *only* advantages which a low carb diet has. The second may be worthwhile, if you currently eat to much, but neither represents a healthy diet.
The best strategy for dieting is to eat a moderate and varied diet (as many different foods as you can - vegetables, fruits, meat, pasta etc) and to be active, exercise. If you do these two things your body will settle nicely into it's optimally healthy, correct weight.
Remember, how healthy you are is more important than how slim you look.
