Jet Air looks West for HQ, hub
Mansi Kapur
[23 Apr, 2007 l 0120 hrs ISTlTIMES NEWS NETWORK]

MUMBAI: Frustrated by the lack of infrastructure in India, Jet Airways chairman Naresh Goyal has finally embraced Horace Greeley's immortal line: "Go West, young man and grow up with the country".

On May 2, the airline is expected to make an announcement on how Brussels will be its operational hub and London, the company's headquarters. While it has been known for a while that Jet Airways will fly from India to North America through Brussels, the scale of the operation has remained under wraps.

As things turn out, until 2001, Belgium had Sabena Airlines — the country's national carrier. During the mid-nineties the airline got into a terrible financial mess and the government, after years of subsidising losses, took a call to get out.

After trying various permutations and combinations that ended in disaster, the airline finally shut down in November 2001. With that, Brussels also lost out on an opportunity to emerge as a hub along the lines of Frankfurt and Amsterdam even though it offered airlines much the same advantages these cities did.

Jet Airways, on its part, has been looking for a base that will allow the airline to service global markets. Indian cities were ruled out because they don't have the infrastructure to be a hub. "We can't wait until 2010 for new airports," said Naresh Goyal, chairman, Jet Airways.

Other European cities that have the infrastructure did not have as many parking slots or the inclination to offer as much support as Jet would have liked. That is when, the airline zeroed in on Brussels.

The Belgian government, it seems, was delighted at the prospect of an airline setting up its operational base in the city and agreed to form a new entity, in association with Jet Air.

While it is not known how much equity the Belgian government and Jet will hold in it, the explicit purpose of this new entity will be to upgrade Brussels Airport into one that can function as a global airline hub.

The funds that will be needed for this upgrade will come from the Belgian government. Goyal declined to talk on the details of the investments and what kind of upgrades will be made at the airport. "That is for the Belgian Prime Minister to talk about," he said. "And he will in a few days."

On its part, Jet is expected to launch a campaign that will position itself as a global carrier — and not just an Indian one. A few days ago, the airline introduced new uniforms for its cabin crew and livery for the aircraft.

It has also entered into code share agreements with other airlines that will give Jet access to a larger network of cities in other parts of Europe. Cabin crew are also being recruited from countries that Jet intends to fly into.

Goyal also squashed speculation that domestically, the airline business would be split between Jet and its new low-cost subsidiary Jet Lite. The buzz was that Jet Airways would fly only international destinations while Jetlite would cater to the domestic market.

Worth making some more enquiries Pretzel.

That 300 hours, for a variety of reasons, regularly extends to 5 or 600 hours. I believe the record is currently up at around 800 hours to get the check.

It really is in your interests to get genuine, current information.

Did you do your line training yet?
How did it go?
Give us some more information please...

As far as the salary is concerned, I think you get your first salary, once you really start to work for Jet Airways.

Do you sign another contract with JET after the training is copleted??

I don't know my status , I'm I really employed yet, do I start to receive my salery next month, when do I get reimbursed for my return tickets from sim screening, how much time will I have after they receive my security clearance???

A small piece of advice to everyone waiting on JetAirways. you need patience. If you're not able to handle the redtape that's involved just getting started you're probably not going to do well over there.
Everything takes time.
For your hotel reinbursement it will take from 1 to 3 months.
Security clearance up to 4 months ( me personally 3 months)
work visa....Im hearing 3 days.( we're going to hand deliver it)
I'm betting on not getting paid till my butt is in mumbai plus 4 weeks.
I've been told, for the captains, you'll get some line indoc. then a line check and you'll be good to go. I'm not sure about the f/o's!
May will be month 6 for me. I expect to be there for the end of May. I'm delaying it slightly so I can renew everything before I go and start fresh.
Good luck to everyone and share the info.

I went through aeropersonnel, Quebec, Canada. I'm planning on renewing my IFR before I go. That'll give me 2 years before i have to worry about it.
I have everything in order to be able to apply for my work visa. I'll be doing that early May. I've signed the contract and I guess they're waiting on me this time to get the work visa.
My official status is "in limbo". But everyday I learn a little more, dig a little deeper and get closer to getting over there.
I'm watching the Air Sahara purchase, and the Air Indus issue and hoping it's not going to effect me.

Jet Airways Move

Did you all see the news item this week that Jet Airways was to move, bag and baggage, to Brussels? Google JA and Brussels together to read. Seems strange. Unknown implications.

... For this event the new B777, straight from Seattle, and the new A330 are going to make a stop at Brussels Airport.

The daily flights, Mumbai via Brussels to New York, are going to start early August.
The daily flights, New Delhi via Brussels to Toronto, are going to start at the end of this year.

Post patience...

Hi , just reading through , thought I would pen down a few points on 9w for all you guys joining....

1. Be assured , like strummer says , PATIENCE , u will need for sure , bring bag fulls of it from where ever you come , as you will need it,considering us indian f/o's took one year from the date of joining or 6 months from the completion of the sim to get relesed as line f/o's.

2.The airline is professional , but at times can be very frustrating as simple thing take time , for the lack of co-ordination and availability of examiners/instructors, for example , I completed 300+ last month , still waiting for a chance to get my 3 checks done on the aircraft for the assisted take off and landing.

3.Indian capts are generally a nice lot , excepting a few , but I am quite sure you have these characters or worse in every airline.

4.I have seen first hand , the first foreign F/o in our airline , she is online , I do not know the duration of her time on ground prior to being released.

5.The flying is good , the weather is nothing like you guys would have experienced where ever you guys come from , the planes are maintained really well and the operations are run well too.

6.As far as I know , for all expats , currently going by what I have seen , 6 days on 1 day off , 8 weeks on , 2 weeks off block.

7.Till you get your assisted take off and landing clearance , LEGALLY , as per the DGCA , you are not allowed to Take off or land ( its crazy even us indians think so) , but capts give you flying 1000 to 1000 and some give you Take off and landing as well , but god forbid there is a heavy landing or an incident , both you and the capt will not be spared the rod .

Anyways , its just my 2 paise worth , welcome on board .

Cheers

Thanks for this comprehensive post VIMD 23:
I still have several questions
Do you know if the foreigner pilot joined Jet Airways with a Randhem contract or applied directy at the HR recruitment branch of the airline.
How many months did you need to get those 300 hours and after being online how many hours per month should you expect.
Does Jet Airways crews perform night stops at some destinations.
Thanks again for this invaluable informtion

....

No idea about her contract , the hours per month vary , but around 60 hrs should be the average and we do night stop at some destinations.

cheers

Jet Info

Vimd23, since you are with Jet Airways, could you give the e-mail address of the following Senior Management like Mr. Garry Kingshott, Mr. Saroj Datta, Mr. Wolfgang Prock, Capt. Werner Borchert and Capt. Ray Heiniger, as I'm working for Jet Lite, and the old management from Sahara restrict us to contact the management from Jet Airways to hide their dirty jobs
