The psychometrics is a very wide field. What i mean by reasoning is mental reasoning, not language reasoning. for eg, how fast you can see the sequences, how your mental calculation works and such in a time frame, whether you can think under pressure, etc. Alright let me use the term aptitude then. Think that term suits better. Psychometric tests are used in every field and different tests are used for different industries.

And no I am not discouraging people from applying. As I said before, it's also due to the stiff competition with regards to degree and non-degree holders. Passion can't be judged as there is no standardization or scale for that. I am sure most applicants have the passion and interest and passion only can be shown at the interviews. HR dept have their own system anyway. And it changes from intake to intake. A good example of handling influx is university applications. From what I heard, don't know how true it is, every application is read even though weeding out is done. As I said, is better for one to get prepared than give false hopes. Or else people won't be asking so many questions about qualifications, intake, experiences and such.

Hi everyone...

From the thread, I can see theres a debate going on... but one thing to be sure of is yourself and what you think you are capable of.

During my first interview, I asked some of them in the same room waiting for their interview whether they have the passion to fly anot, but they say its just another job application to try out to see if they are lucky... They didnt get in, probably they panick when bombarded some questions like why you wanna be a pilot... nothing technical if you have no knowledge of aviation... ( like me, I'm in life science field and total avaition idiot if you read back the thread)

What I wanna point out is that no matter what background you have or dont, it boils down to whether you can react under stress calmly, do you have the passion for flying, will you be able to forgo everything for this passion or career in life? if everything is yes... like advised by billkill or others read up a bit... know the planes and engines or some other thing which show that you have read up a bit...

Seriously if I can do it, everyone should be able to do it... and you must really have the patience to wait for the whole process and im still waiting for them to offer me... sigh its painful but after waiting theres no time to even breath cause everything will be so packed up you forget how to switch on your tv hahaha... thats what im told thou...

For those wannabes, keep trying and dont give up!!!
everything is possible if you are positive...

Cheers

Hi all! Congrats to all that got in!!

Just have some questions,

Does SIA prefer local uni grads or overseas uni grads?

Do you stand an advantage if you have a science or engineering background?

Does having a PPL help?

Hope someone here can answer these questions...thanks!

Its the heart, the mind and the soul. Passion contains pain, doubt and fufillment.

Cheers.

DonJuan,

I may have made a mistake, the course may be starting 2 Sep. I got it from a friend who was offered cargo.

NoBrain,

Having a PPL is a double-edged sword as far as interview is concerned. The plus point is that you have proof that you can handle an aircraft. The minus point is that you can expect tougher technical questions on flying machines.

Lasik

Hello everyone,

Consider my situation, I have been through lasik this march and the results for the procedure has been excellent as confirmed by my doctor (coming to six months for post op). I wonder what will be my predicament, having sent the application this July and hopefully do make it for the medicals?

1)Will they consider that I am deemed "unfit" and fail the medicals?

2)Will they put me on pending till a year of post op date has been reached?

3) Will they not even grant me a 2nd interview altogether if they are aware of my conditions?

Look forward to all your views and personal experiences. Thank you!

Lasik

paper plane,
its an unwritten rule that you will have to wait a minimum of one year before applying. But if you had not indicated this in the apllication form, chances are you might be called for interview and if they are impressed, they would want some documentation as proof to all is well with your eyes.

Hi guys,

I've had a few drinks tonight, so i feel like i'm in the typing mood :P. hehheeheheh

I have been reading this thread for a long long time, pretty much everyday, i will check for new posts. Its always great to see those lucky ones get selected for an interview and then make it all the way thru and start their course, congrats to them.

I though i might aswell apply for the cadetship now, i still have my Malaysian Citizenship, even though i have spent most of my life growing up here in OZ. I have just completed my degree in computing and also have some flying experience behind me. Im really am quite passionate about aviation in general, have wanted to be a pilot the first time i was an aeroplane.

I just got a few quick questions.

There has been alot of discussions about 'O' levels, 'A' levels etc.
I have done nearly all my primary schooling and all of my high schooling in australia.

Im sorta guessing that the 'O' levels will be the equivalent to the Australian Year 10. In Perth, once you have finished year 10 you have pretty much finsished school legally, ie you have a choice if you want to attend school or not now. The years 11 and 12 are the years you study so that you can attend university. So i'm guessing that the 'A' levels will be equivalent to the Australian Year 12. Does anyone have any idea or information about this at all?

I also will be applying with a degree, so im guessing it doesn't matter where you have done your degree as long as you have completed it. But does it also matter on the results of your degree, or does SIA look at the results you have acheived.

On the SIA application form there is an attachment with flying experience. I have only done about 70 hours of flying privately over the last few years, is it necessary to fill out that form at all?, im thinking that form is for the big guns with heaps of experience when they are applying for direct entry FO or Captain positions.

Also does anyone have an idea when is the best time to apply?, i know from reading the posts on the previous pages there was an intake recently, anyone have an idea if there is going to be an intake soon?

cheers guys

Sept Intake

Hi DonJuan and SQ007,

Congrats on getting the offer from SQ. The Sept intake that you are referring to, is it the OBS course, or the actual flight training at Seletar?

Also, anyone else on this forum that has cleared his medical and just waiting for offer from SQ?

Kind regards

Yup Niner, that would be me. Everyone in my interview batch received notification except me. This doesn't look good at all.

NinerVictor,
I suppose the intake is to start OBS on 2nd Sept. I think the Seletar phase follows after that.....

Jabba-777:

I have no information about your Year 10-12 qualifications, you can either (1) email CAAS direct regarding this, or (2) you can email SIA HR for more information.

However, regarding your degree, it does not matter what results you obtain. SIA looks more for the O Levels or its equivalent. Check earlier posts for more infomation.

As for your flying experience, you should indicate your level of experience as you may get dispensation for the CPL/IR, just remember to indicate clearly what flights were those, ie, as PIC, any Cross Country flights...etc.

As for when is the best time to apply, there is no answer to that. So long as you fulfill the requirements like age, education, height, eyesight... you can apply anytime, and wait for the interviews / selections. Usually, there'll be a course that begins every month (approximately).

Hope this helps.

Hi Limpeh,

Thanks for the reply, I will try and find out about the O and A levels and then send my application off in the next few days.

Cheers
