SIA is not stupid. SIA has people in MFA doing spying. SIA long knew MFA standard has dropped.

Actually I was the only one in the batch with a CPL/IR. The rest were people with no prior flying experience.

Medical results are OUT!!!!

Aspiring female pilot

Hey everyone! I hope u can help me with some qns!

1. Females are auto posted to silkair? But I apply to SIA 1st right?
2. By the time I graduate from uni, I'd be only 22-23 years old, since I dun have NS. Is it advisable to work till I'm 26 to apply or should I try my luck at 23 yrs old?
3. What is the typical schedule like for a Silkair pilot?
4. If u guys encounter a lone female cadet pilot in ur course, would u be inclined to leave her out in a grp? http://airlinespilot.com/images/smiles/icon_redface.gif
5. Anyone has any idea how many female pilots are dere in Silkair now?

Oh btw, here's some bg abt myself. Kindly advise me if there is anything I can do to aid in my application. Thanks a lot!

I'm 18 turning 19 dis yr, entering nus to major in econs dis august. No problems with the height and eyesight requirements, took triple sci at o level. Was with SYFC for aeromodelling (sec 3-4), as well as flying with SYFC in jc (no PPL though http://airlinespilot.com/images/smiles/icon_sad.gif ). Hmm what other stuff do u reckon I should take up to boost my chances. Really keen to be a commercial pilot (:

Thanks for ur time!

Hi there,

Its nice to see female aspiring pilots...
well, you can apply for SIA cadetship after you have graduated from your degree as you are not liable for NS duties. in the mean while, go reflect on why you did not get a PPL from YFC? apitude? pyschomotor? from an employer aspect, i guess they would want to what is the reason for you that you did not get sponsored for the free PPL.

Next issue will be height requirement of 165cm.....thats the athropohy medical aspects.

I have only seen in female self-sponsored cadets but non from the ab-intio programme yet. As for SilkAir, Females are all directed to Silkair for a number of reasons. there are currently about 4 (if i am not wrong) female pilots in SIA organisation, they are mainly from the airforce transporters.

another way you can achieve being a pilot will be applying for RSAF now! get into RSAF and get they to pay for your flying as well as your degree, if it is the cup of tea for you.

Try going back to take your PPL with YFC again since you are still in the eligible range ie. local degree and under 26, if its possible.

Cheers,
A Great Way to Fly

It's still an old style Malaysia-Singapore Airways MSA managers from the old days that are still in charge. Mostly Ex-Malaysians in flt ops management jobs. The 26-yr-old policy for Singaporeans dun help the locals. Naturally, "mats" get better chances. "They suck up better too"

Fantastic! 101% true! ;)

Hi guys,

I hope you guys can give some opinions with regards to the following matter .I'm currently pursuing a part time degree at NUS(Mechanical Engineering).I graduated from Singapore Polytechnic with a Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering and I also joined SYFC during poly though I didn't obtained the ppl.

I've applied for SQ's cadet pilot programme last year only to be turned down due to age limit(22 then).Hence,I decided to do a part time degree at NUS and I've also applied for the officer(engineering) position with SQ.I am currently waiting for their response. Is it advisable to work for SQ in another position(engineering officer/flight dispatcher) while doing my studies?I've a great passion for flying and my long term goal is to fly with SQ .However,my short term goal is to work with an aviation company in a technical field while I complete my studies as I really don't want to lose touch with aviation. Is there any other way I could boost my chances of getting into SQ's cadet pilot programme?Do I stand a lower chance of being selected cause I took up a part time degree as opposed to a full time one?I sincerely hope you guys can shed some light on this.

Yours Sincerely,
Vibes

AiRBuS_380 16th Jun 2008 20:38

Hi,

Just work your way till your 26 and try SQ again...thats the best way for locals, if your financially strong, perhpas a CPL/IR on your own will bring you to where you want.

part-time degree is alright it is not a concern.

Do you know what a flight dispatcher role is? your studying thus i dont think that will be suitable as flight dispatcher roles are shift-work duties. although CAAS do not need licensed flight dispatchers, but you will need to do a flight dispatch certification course (FOM1 and FOM2) with a designated centre. SG do not have a license for Flight dispatch. Go do some homework in this field if you want to get a job in flight operations. this programme can be sponsored if you got a job which experience is not a concern but this will come with a 2 yr bond if I am correct.

i do not see any passion from you in terms of flying with the fact that you are from YFC but no PPL yet your not doing anything about it. You may try to go think about this point and again, go back YFC to complete your free PPL if possible.

Cheers,
Great Way to Fly!

Hi, just one quick question.

How long would it take for SIA to get clearance from the Ministry of Manpower?

N118KA 23rd Jun 2008 05:42

What do you mean by "mats" SlimShadey?

What do you mean by "mats" SlimShadey? Care to elaborate and tell us all?

hilrtougi 4th Jul 2008 03:58

confused.

hi guys, i just wanna know more abt the age restriction at 26, this is the 1st time i ve read abt this rule. i presume that limit is a minimum n not a maximum for ab-initio pilots. the singapore airlines website doesnt indicate the min. age req. what. is this just hearsay? i m actually quite worried n alil angry perhaps, if the 26 rule is true, i ve to wait for at least half a year b4 i can apply after i graduate frm uni. this is terrible.

hilrtougi 4th Jul 2008 10:18

hi there, fellow hopeful.

hi i dun think the guys wld mind a lil female companionship in flight school.:8
btw just to let u know i tried some fancy flying too in the syfc when i was 17 but didnt go all the way, sadly.
my only advice to you is that u shld concentrate on getting that degree 1st for backup, and while u r in uni, invest some money on a joystick and microsoft flight simulator(some call it a computer game). the game really helps in honing one's directional sense(at least for me), even though many have claimed its flight characteristics are rather different frm actual flight dynamics.
erm, yes, female pilots get streamed to Silkair only, dunno why.
anyways, good luck! i am holding onto my dream as well!

Interviewees do take note...

Hi everyone,

I dropped by the interview room in STC recently and noticed a number of interesting things:

1. Polo T-shirts.
2. No neck ties.
3. 77th Street/Far East/Emo Punk accessories.
4. MS Flight Simulator aircraft ratings and hours.

I'm not kidding about the last one! Haha!

The point I'm trying to make is that this job means a lot to many of us. Just getting called up for the interview is worth celebrating, I feel. So guys and gals, if you treasure this once-a-lifetime shot at a job you think is the bees-knees, please put your best foot forward and impress upon the Captains that you're capable of living up to their expectations.

Some of the cadets processing the application forms were nice enough to suggest to those inappropriately dressed to return with proper attires, some were nice enough to run up to the office to photocopy certificates for the interviewees. If you're reading this and you do get the 2nd interview, you guys know who to thank! Basically, we know what you're going through sitting there waiting for the room number to buzz and we would like you to have the best chance possible.

However, what you do after the interview is entirely up to you! Haha!

All the best, everyone!

dariusme 6th Jul 2008 00:53

hi senna
was there at the time and witness what you saw. But i was the interviewee. Yeah, just cannot imagine wht people would come so inapporiately dressed and attired. Imagine i had to fly down all the way from 5000km away just to attend this interview.Youngster nowadays are simply not treasuring the channce they're getting...Btw, i'm already 31 and a pilot wannabe...Any chance i might get to find out more abt the interview stuff from you?

dariusme 6th Jul 2008 00:56

hi hilrtougi
Mind if you share with me what are the type of games MS flight simulator game you're talking abt? I wanted to get hold of a copy so that i could do so practising in case i'm called up for the 2nd interview...

Knightwhosays_NI 6th Jul 2008 09:20

Inappropriate dressing for interviews has been an eyesore for quite some time now. There's actually a column in the interview's form for 1st impressions on the interviewee. No tie? Sloppy dressing? Goes straight into the comments, at the top of the page, and most likely the interviewer has already decided on the interviewee's fate.

I've heard many many excuses. One guy told me his friend said that it's like interviewing for a financial adviser position, so keep it casual, don't wear a tie. With friends like that, who needs enemies? When I told another chap coming out of the interview room that his not having a tie is going to hurt his chances, he simply shrugged and said that if they didn't pick him, then...... they didn't pick him. Nice attitude.

Even if you forgot your tie, borrow from someone's who waiting for his turn.

Polo tees are new though, at least to me. T-shirt and bermudas next?

But I've changed my perception on this now. Let them dress the way they think appropriate. That way, it's easier to separate the wheat from the chaff. If I were the interviewer, I'd instruct the cadets to turn these applicants away at the door, and count it as a failed interview (the 1st of 2 chances one gets at the 1st interview).

senna1977 6th Jul 2008 11:43

Hi dariusme, are you the applicant from Ipoh? I hope the interview went well for you! Hey, age isn't that much of an issue, I feel. I joined when I was 29, so SIA is pretty good to their word when they set the age limits. As a matter of fact, one of my friends got selected when he was past the advertised age limits. I suppose SIA wants good people, as long as their productive years are still substantial.

Interview stuff? I obviously don't have access to the questions being asked but I always felt that being genuine and honest is the key. Managing to convince the interviewers that you're a person they would like to work with is important. The interviewers are selecting people to receive million-dollar training programmes, so convince them to select you! Personally, I wanted this job badly so I went to get some private flying hours and also attended an introductory ATPL course. However, I was aware that I still may not get the job, so I made plans to get my own CPL/IR if all goes pear shaped. So when the interview came, I just told them my plans and they were convinced about me!

Bottomline, be honest and be yourself during the interviews. Don't drop your guard during the tea-party as well, because that could make or break the deal. If you really want this job, I think the Captains would know.

Good luck and hope I will see you soon! :ok:

Knightwhosays_NI: Hi, Knight! Yes, you're right about the attitude of some of the applicants. If the Captains were at the front desk to screen the applicants coming in, I'm sure more than a few would get rejected straight off. Perhaps we're from another era but the least a person could do for any job interview is to dress up appropriately, i.e long-sleeve business shirt (not those go Zouk types! Haha!), proper neck-tie, neat hair cut, etc. To have to turn anyone away would be tough, but you're right about the wheat and the chaff. Some do slip through though..! Haha!

Cheers,
Senna

overmars 6th Jul 2008 12:54

Marcato,

First of all, I would say don't bother about trying to join RSAF. You don't seem to have any interest in actually being in the airforce other than to increase your chances of joining SQ. This I say by your post suggesting that you seem more interested in knowing how to get out of the airforce bond to jump to SQ. Anyway, you can try, but the interviewers will just see right through you and you wont get in.

Next, there are many other people out here who have asked the same questions as you, and they got their answers. Why are you asking the same questions? Read through the posts and don't give the excuse that there are many pages. Trust me, when, and if, you become a pilot, there will be a hell lot more pages of manuals that you will have to read. So you might as well start at 18. You have eight years to find your answers.

hilrtougi 7th Jul 2008 12:43

hi darius

yo dariusme,

u can purchase the microsoft flight simulator program/game at funan the IT mall top level, The Challenger. look for FSX, which is the latest version of the microsoft flightsim franchise. if u dun have a joystick, buy one, dun buy saitek brand, they suck. buy logitech.

hope this helped, if got any further questions, pm me bah.

good luck.

hilrtougi 7th Jul 2008 12:48

haha

hi marcato,

i thought the same way when i was ur age! ur plan A shld be to join the RSAF definitely! dont fly a helicopter though, have fun flying fixed wing while 'serving' ur bond. before u know it, u wld ve fulfilled ur bond, and then u can choose to join SIA if u wish to. the air force will even pay for ur college fees, n monthly salary while u r in college. isnt that awesome?!!

all the best,
hilr.
