Hello,

My timeline for the application was:
Application - End of July
Invitation for Prelim Interviews - Early August
Prelim Interviews - Mid August (Results released after 2 working days)
Aptitude Test - Mid September (Results released on day itself)
Final Interview - Early October

I don't have outstanding school results. I just met their requirements stated on their website (English, Mathematics and Science). Some of the interviewees I've met have no background in Aviation as well. they came from different backgrounds, some still in their final year of studies and others were already working in a totally different industry. So, I am equally as lost as you in terms of how they send out invitations for the preliminary interviews.

Hey man thanks alot for the info and details. Was just wondering how long did it take for SIA to get back to you after your medical check up? Also, do you know what are the medical requirements that they are looking for?

It'll probably take 1 to 1.5 months. I just finished my medical so it'll probably take a while for them to call me up. I'm not sure of the company's medical requirements, but I know they're stricter than CAAS. So passing the CAAS side doesn't guarantee passing the SQ internal board.

Does having a PPL gives you an advantage in being selected? What are actually the guidelines that SIA uses in selecting candidates? I am from Malaysia and asking whether I still have time or not to apply? Does having a 3.92 CGPA in Diploma Aircraft Maintenance actually help?

secres77 12th Oct 2018 07:26

So I had my interview today (failed preliminary) and interestingly enough, they conducted all the interviews + aptitude test in one day. So everyone who went through the preliminary interview was told whether we passed or failed on the day itself. Those who passed went on to the panel interview and I'm guessing aptitude test thereafter.
Anyway, best of luck to all those who're going for the interviews. Be as prepared as you can be!
I did my homework but it just wasn't enough. I faltered on one of the questions which led to other connected questions.

They held all the interviews in one day? That is tough. Even doing the interviews on separate days was tough for me cos its really exhausting. I can't imagine doing 3 stages in 1 day.

Yes and no. It depends on how you use it to your advantage during the interview session. Most of the candidates selected have no flying experience other than some having done trial or joy rides. I think as long as the career page states that they're hiring then you will still have time to apply. If you look at their future orders, that's quite a lot of planes they're expecting and with every airline, they need pilots to fly the planes. Your diploma does not make a difference in being a pilot, people who apply for the job come from all walks of life. Your chances are almost as equal as someone who graduated with a Diploma in Business or even Law.

Well, not to worry, as long as you stumbled at the 1st stage - you can always reapply! Don't give up, unlearn and re-learn. Cheers!

Cheers! :D

What are some technical questions I should prepare for (besides principles of lift/theory of flight, how turbojet/turbofan engine works, explaining flight controls)? The one I wasn't prepared for was everything to do with commercial plane speed vs speed of sound (in mach numbers).

The questions vary really, according to the candidates profile and the interview panel of the day. However, based on my experience and conversations with fellow interviewees, thematically the questions encompass technical, geography, general knowledge, personal, problem-solving and very importantly 'honesty/integrity' bench-markers (i.e. the popular tone - 'If you don't know, say you don't know'). Having said that, I cannot recommend any specific technical areas to learn (moreover, I am not from any aviation related technical background) but what I did was learn technical aspects from a general understanding perspective. Ultimately, my learning objective: to be able to explain the technical knowledge to a 6 year old (simple, precise, easy). Keep it simple!

If it is of any help, I have my preparatory compilation which I would gladly share. Perhaps, the compilation could give you an idea of the technical aspects which I prepared for and hope it benefits your learning process. Cheers!

Thanks for that! Yeah I was hoping they would ask me questions more relevant to my own background. I guess you can never be too prepared :)

And yes, that would be awesome if you could share what you've compiled. Most probably I will try and apply to other airlines as well.

Thanks for the tips, would be grateful if you could share with me your preparatory compilation as well.

And what would you think is the best way to prepare for the aptitude test? Did you purchase any software like SkyTest to practice on?

Thanks!

I did not purchase any online tests, most of my preparation utilised free online tests, recommendation from fellow interviewees and reading on the experience of others (exactly the way you are doing it) to be mentally prepared for the tests. As I have mentioned before, the tests do not require any prior experience or specific knowledge - it is an aptitude test to determine 'appropriate attitude', therefore it is in my opinion a test which requires a certain discipline, composure and understanding of detailed instruction. Anyone can do it well, however with a certain practice regime, you could do it better, and that is our objective correct! Self-benchmarking not competition.

Having said that, I practised numerous tests on every available website (free!) to familiarise my mental state with the expected theme of the tests. It is imperative to understand that we are not practicing to memorise answers, rather to familiarise the mind when a similar test may crop up during the actual assessment, hence reducing reaction time, increasing memory capacity etc.

Cheers and all the best, take it one step at a time!

Hi Emir, I tried replying to your PM but your inbox was full. As others have said, I think what SIA is looking for is interest and passion. I don’t have any background in aviation or engineering, instead my background is in finance.

As for the timeline, I applied back in May/June, and only gotten a reply in September. So if you have just applied, give them some time to get back to you. In the meantime, just do as much preparation as you may not know when they could get back to you! All the best!

Thank you for your feedback. I have actually applied 5 times since October. Every time I applied, after 2 weeks, they would send me an email saying that they rejected me and my application would change from 'in review' to 'closed'.

But I have the option to 'reapply'. Please guys, I really need this. I have IELTS, Diploma 3.92 and so on. I don't know why I am not selected. It is because in the same time I applied for cadet, I applied for cabin crew too? I really need some advice guys. Im feeling kind a down now.

Hi, u can only apply 6 months after your first rejection mail. If u apply earlier than that, the system would automatically reject u.

As for why you are rejected, it was probably because u applied again even before they processed your first application.

Btw to those who are curious, I applied for the position way back in May/June, and they only got back to me with the invitation last week.

Hi stevendefool,

I have applied around June too and still have not yet receive any news and the status remain as 'In Review'.. I wonder if you re-apply in between the period May/June to the point you received the invitation, and if yes, how? I seem to not find the way to re-apply without creating a new account. Using the same account it will just return the status I have applied for the position.

Thanks!

Hi fnr,

I didn’t re-applied. Maybe just wait a little longer? As I heard from the HR that they only hold interview in Malaysia once every quarter. All the best!
