First glance

My reading of that is:

Any land that has buildings on it is a brownfield site. However, in the past, the fact that airfields have a lot of open ground as well attached the building meant there...

Feeling

I find it very easy to believe nobody felt anything. I remember a documentary years ago reported on an experiment air accident investigators did -- they either simulated a crash or crashed a 737 on...

The conclusions

The researchers speaking to the programme came to the conclusion that in low demand situations using a text system to replace radio is beneficial but during take off and landing voice is still better.

My understanding

From what I've read in the write up the experiment (carried out by Nottingham University) was to completely replace spoken interaction with ATC with text interaction. The idea was to keep the...

ATC by text

I'm a Radio 4 fan and tonight @ 21:00, Leading Edge (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/science/leadingedge.shtml) is, among other things, going to report on a trial of ATC by text message.

One thing about using search engines that I've learnt is to always be prepared to rephrase your search key. If I'm investigating something I would change the search terms 5+ times.

I second those who suggested "The Killing Zone - How and why pilots die". I'm 3/4 way through it and the overwhelming feeling I have is why isn't a book like this given to all new drivers (it'd make...

Probably the same planet, indeed the same country, where school trips are being cancelled just because the accident liability is too high.

How

Not directly but think of this:

1800 MHz is 1.8 GHz

If the computer which is processing that signal has a 1.8 GHz chip then it can, in theory, interfere with the chip's processing of the signal.

That may play a part but, from what I've experienced (and read), there's more to it than that. In terms of cars, research shows a driver whilst driving naturally moves his/her head in a way that...

You may want to talk to your CAA approved doctor. They'll be up-to-date on the latest CAA requirements and be able to advise.

My understanding

I haven't started my PPL yet nor read up on law. However, I suspect you'll find that it depends on the aircraft type (I may be wrong).

Some may have been QFE and some QNH (I think I did hear both). You might be right about the 1007 being 11 -- I was struggling to hear the radio and the ATIS report was the only I heard clearly (and...

A quick reply

1972,

If I had the cash I'd go ahead and get my PPL. My experience has convinced me that that flying is something that I'd enjoy. Yes, I'm afraid of heights but the plane felt very natural to me...

Lister, X-Plane is reasonable provided you remember it's only a sim. The maker's boast they have FAA approval for real pilots to clock up hours on it but it's not a patch on the real thing. It...

I suspect I would have enjoyed it a lot more if I had better control over my fear. I would need to make a few more flights to decide whether it was worth it or not.

Trial lesson -- comparing sim with reality (long story)

I've long played flight simulators (including a 747 one on the old BBC Micro). In recent years Flight Unlimited II on a low power Win 98 box and X-Plane V8 on OS X.

I have a confession: I'm...

I have an apology: I'm not a pilot (though I'm thinking of becoming one). However, I can see it from the airport's point of view.

Whilst aviation can be fun, a major airport is a business. The...

shortstripper,

Thank you for your reply. Your words have given me food for thought. The idea about getting a PPL first sounds sensible.
