Chances of hitting a flock of birds in IMC/night are next to 0. Simply as birds don't tend to fly at night in IMC. One thing to grateful of!

Scan is going to show, even if you don't trust AH that Altitude is either climbing or level, ASI will be increasing if level or decreasing/stable if climbing and VSI...

1) engine that takes out hydraulic pump so you are unable to retract flaps and gear, it's not going to want to climb well at all.
