exams needed for the EASA IR(H)

Hello,
A question regarding exams needed for the EASA IR(H): According to CAP 804 FCL.615 applicants need to pass the following theoretical knowledge examinations to qualify for a IR:
· Air Law,
· Human Performance,
· Meteorology,
· Radio Navigation,
· IFR Communications.
· Aircraft General Knowledge – Instrumentation,
· Flight Performance and Monitoring,

Does anyone know if the subject referred to as “Aircraft General Knowledge – Instrumentation” in CAP 804 is the same as the one just called “instrumentation” on the UK CAA website covering exam registration and if “Flight Performance and Monitoring” is the same as the one referred to as “Performance” on caa.uk.co?

Thanks a lot!

One more question: I passed the ATPL(H) exams back in 2008/9. Since more than 36 months have passed I need to take the exams required for the IR again. According to CAP 804 FCL.025 I can only take the exams when recommended by the ATO responsible for my training.

Would that be the ATO with which I did my ATPL theory course or the ATO at which I will do the IR course?

4 ???

Hi.

Paco, how is it there are only 4 exams ?

I thought that after the 36 month the IR part expired and you need to resit the 7 additional exams,

If its only 4 which ones are they ?

Thanks

Although not being Paco, you can have a look at Part-FCL Appendix 1 which not exhaustively states the following:

"4.2. An applicant for an IR(H) having passed the relevant theoretical examinations for an ATPL(H) VFR is required to pass the following examination subjects:
— Air Law,
— Flight Planning and Flight Monitoring,
— Radio Navigation,
— IFR Communications."

Also, if you don't hold current ATPL(H) theoretical credits but do for CPL(H):

"4.1. An applicant for an IR having passed the relevant theoretical examinations for a CPL in the same aircraft category is credited towards the theoretical knowledge requirements in the following subjects:
— Human Performance,
— Meteorology."

Is it the same course and exams for aeroplanes as for helicopters?

The same. You have the ATPL(H)(VFR) if you hold an amendment 3 CPL(H), BTW.

The IR exams are included with the 14 writtens for the ATPL(H) with IR as it is now called.

We cover the IR specifically.

Exam Schedule

The CAA has the IR exams listed on Mondays, ex 13 Oct., 8 Dec.
Do you take all 7 exams on a Monday?

CAP 804 refers, but here are the relevant regs:

After the introduction of the new reduced CPL(H) theory course, the combination no longer equates to ATPL(H) theory. To gain the ATPL(H) with IR if you have a post-Amendment 3 JAA/EASA CPL(H), you must take 12 exams out of the 14 required - you will be exempt POF(H) and VFR Comms. If you just want the ATPL(H), you are exempt air law as well.

However, it is our opinion that, if you have a CPL(H) issued under JAR FCL Amendment 3, that is the equivalent of the ATPL(H)(VFR) in terms of theoretical knowledge - paragraph 2.050(b)(10) refers. This credit was carried over into Part FCL. In addition, Article 4(1) of Commission Regulation (EU) 1178/2011 refers to JAR compliant licences being deemed to be Part FCL licences. The legal definition of "JAR Compliant" licence is in Article 2, which refers to licences, ratings, certificates, authorisations and other qualifications issued or recognised by a State, reflecting "JAR and procedures". We interpret this to include ATPL(H) TK credit.

Since the introduction of the ATPL(H)(VFR), the IR(H) and the ATPL(H) theory have their own validity period from the day the exams are successfully completed - 36 months for the CPL(H) and IR(H) and 7 years from the last validity of an IR entered in the licence, or a helicopter type rating (for helicopters).

The good old CAA

Phil

Although it states this in black and white in JAR-FCL 2 and EASA Part-FCL about the CPL credits, it is looking like the CAA are not buying it!! I'm having this battle at the moment with them - as you know. Last email sent to the CAA was 3 weeks ago and still no reply!! They are recognising this if you did the original ATPL exams/license though.

Don't you just love 'em

Hi Paco, your last post is very interesting. Please confirm (so I can check I have read it correctly), that if I did ATPL(H) theory under JAR amendment 3 back in 2002 my exams are still valid for an IR(H) provided I have kept current on a type rating since CPL(H) issue? And that although the IAA recognise this the CAA do not?

Cheers!

That's about it.

The second paragraph came from the IAA, the last one from the CAA.

From JAR OPS Amendment 6 (10) "the holder of a CPL(H) gained under previous amendments of JAR-FCL 2 up to and including Amendment 3 is credited with the theoretical knowledge requirements for ATPL(H)."

It would appear that the carrying over is the problem. Some people in the CAA say it was done, others say it was never adopted. Go figure.
