Looking at some of those shots of G-EHMS, I realise I would probably need many many years of experience to be able to land in those tight confines - major kudos to the pilots

I wonder how different the decisions would have been if it wasn't a NOTAR? I imagine there is a little less to worry about with a 902.

In the photo of N2105J (a Bell 222?) above, what are the pipes running from the engine exhausts for?

Looks like space heater pipes to me helps to prevent the eng and airframe from too much cold soaking.

Oft times in really cold weather in Alaska we used to drain the engine oil and remove the battery and take them in doors to keep them warm....and used small electric heaters in the engine bay, transmission bay, and cockpit to keep them as warm as possible.

Things slow down when it gets down around -30 to-40 F.

Those tubes you see are a Herman Nelson Heater which is a VERY high BTU heater that is standard kit in Canada in the winter. The heat from the external source is ducted wherever it's needed.

The heat can be put into almost any critical part of the aircraft when the temps are very low. As SASLess said, small Car Heaters are also used, just little electric ones, and they also do a good job when the temps aren't too extreme.

These tools are a must trying to get a 212 ready at -40C when it's been out overnight...

That is correct. I beleive it was $1000 to hangar aircraft over night or $500 to get it defrosted in the morn. It was at least -30c if not colder. RIP N2105J

NASUS,

Send a pm to Heliport, I'm sure he'll be only too happy to help.

I would imagine he's tucked up in his bed by now seeing as it's 00:46 in the UK

Regards

Jim
