Spot for Lunch

Hi there,
I'm looking for an interesting or unusual restaurant/hotel/pub with helipad (field) within 20 minutes of Prestwick, Scotland

Any ideas on Arran, Islay, Jura or inland?

Thanks
Bilbo

The Island of Gigha (East of Islay) has a small grass field. But when we visited earlier this year the Gigha Hotel invited us to land on the grass directly in front of the hotel. Good approaches and not many wires or other obstacles and a level site. Very friendly hotel, reasonable food and they have rooms there although we didn't stay so I can't give you any feedback on them. Try calling them for further info - 01583 505254.

TTB; the Royal Bath Hotel site is tiny, and last time I went was surrounded by garden furniture which blew every where. Under the terms of the ANO it is a twin site. They may have stopped people using it as I believe someone pointed out just how bad it was.

Briarfields - Titchwell, North Norfolk Coast

Had a great lunch today at the Briarfields Hotel and Restaurant at Titchwell, just west of Brancaster. Very nice bar food as well as large restaurant, very scenic surroundings and no charge for landing. The manager said heli visitors were very welcome. Very unchallenging landing site.
52° 57.753'N 0° 36.923'E. Google for hotel details.

OK - so it's not England but Wales. Go here.

Was very helicopter friendly last time I was there - enough room to land a squadron.

Landing pads

Hi All

Good mate of mine has set up a concrete pad at his campsite, it's about 10 miles NW of Swansea just outside Ammanford. It's called Bryncoch campsite and there are caravan and tent sites, a fishing lake plus a B&B in the farmhouse on site. The pad is well away from the pitches, so no problem there. There are also wooden pods you can stay in which he also sells. He has plenty of land for aircraft parking off the pad , all with good approaches. Trevor (my mate) is a great guy and very helpful with anything you can think of, also our local pub is about 10 mins walk. The site is on the western edge of the Brecon Beacons so the scenery is great.A ccouple of us pilots live close to the site so we can always trade war stories at the pub and fuel is available at Swansea airport 7 days a week. You could even drop in for a cup of tea if you want. Go to S.Wales Camping website for more details or give Trevor a call on 07759725507 or 01269 850005.

Cheers

1. Is it ust England, or also Scotland & Wales to consider?
2. How far through England do you want to travel - N / S / E / W ?
3. What are you looking for - accommodation or just lunches etc?

Looking to pick your brains

Have been asked by family members to fly them for a lunch at a nice restaurant.
A/C will be an R-44 from Denham, looking for something within 30 min flight.
Nice food, and would like to avoid paying a fortune for Landing Fees

Thanks for the suggestions!

Chewton Glen Hotel in Bournemouth. Though the last time I went was in the late '90s, though I would imagine you can't be disappointed.

Depending on your need for a more challenging site, Lunch at the Aviator at Sywell would take about 30 mins.

Places to land and EAT - UK

Been thinking recently it would be great if good suggestions for heli friendly spots to land and eat could be passed on by you lot as the weather improves and the fair weather flying season approaches, I would be prepared to collate them and try to present them in an orderly fashion by some means if enough suggestions can be made any comment on the size/suitability of landing site for single/twin would also be useful...

Also a little short notice but I'm about to fly back (next hr or two) from Dewsbury to Coventry with an ex-pupil and any good suggestions for a mid-way bite around the peak district or east mids would be much appreciated

Cheers, Aucky

Staverton Aviator earlier this week while stopping off for fuel;

Order from the specials menu;

Paella, Chicken and Chips, Cheeseburger and chips.

40 minutes later, be told that the chef had left earlier and no-one knew how to do Paella, but the rest of the order will be ready in 5 mins. Ask when the chef will be back and be told that 'we don't know'. Re-order lasagne and chips in replacement.

10 mins later, be told that there was no chicken left. Ask if the burger or lasagne was ready...get no answer.

Cancel whole order and ask for money back.

Receive money back from original order which did not match amount paid. Totally ignored and walked away from when asking about discrepancy.

Finally walk to bar and complain about amount refunded, told that the difference was the drinks (3 colas) had while waiting for food. Expressed surprise that perhaps complimentary drinks would be in order, shoulders shrugged and back turned.

On return to table to explain situation to colleagues, further refund made, shortly followed by manager appearing to explain situation about chef.

Left dissappointed and not impressed, as everyone else during our wait was being served chicken and burgers while we waited for the paella.

Won't be going there again.

Devonshire Arms, Restaurant, hotel & spa - Ilkley, 10mins NW of Leeds, great food, 2-3 hard Heli stands + grass parking area bordering pub garden (many interested onlookers on sunny days so practice those landings), approach over scattered low trees but suitable for singles IMO. Great food, and next to Bolton Abbey to walk off lunch (W&B ) Moderately priced, Recommended
