Bell 205 Pilots needed in Quebec
Saw an ad at an American helicopter website listing vacancies for Bell 205 pilots....ad was for seasonal hire but noted that "French speaking" pilots could work year round.
How long would it take for a western Canada based company advertising for "English speaking" pilots to be hung drawn and quartered by the Canadian government and "French speaking" Canadians?
Should Frank be spanked for that ad?

The sad truth of the matter is...that one should be able to speak french to work in Quebec, as one should speak english to work in western Canada. It May not be right, but that's the way it is, and probably won't change any time soon either.
The other sad truth is that many western pilots wouldn't work for Quebec wages, somewhat lower than we're used to seeing

And the Quebecois think they speak French. Maybe as was spoken in Paris in the 1800's. Don't worry I have had to translate between a Frenchmen and a Quebecois as they could not communicate in French or English for that matter. Quel catastrophe!!!! And yes it involved Bell 205's in the SOF, about 15 years ago tho'.

What utter madness! Imagine the nerve of a company wanting to hire pilots that spoke the same language as their clients.
I’m sure that if a company wanted to work in South America they would try and recruit Spanish-speaking pilots.

It is much easier for a unilingual English pilot to operate in Quebec than a unilingual French pilot to operate in the rest of Canada. In Quebec, Air Traffic Services (ATS) are provided in both French and English. Outside of Quebec and the National Capital Region (Ottawa), ATS is provided in English only.

Just why should there be such a thing as a unilingual French speaking pilot in Canada? Does not the Canadian educational system teach the other language to students in the English or French speaking provinces?
It would seem to me that Canada being Bi-lingual....the customers should be able to speak English as well as French....or am I over-estimating the Canadian educational system and dedication of the various communities to learn the other's language. I find it hard to beleive that Quebec business people do not speak English.
I guess this just proves how little those of us that live south of the border know about our neighbors.

Shouldn't all ATC be in English worldwide?
There have been several accidents in France due to a law passed that says that ATC should be done in French to help preserve the French language, which is great fun if you havn't got a clue were the last position report from a nearby aircraft came from.
I had hoped that it was just a french thing, but it seems to be the case in French Canada aswell, they would sooner put lives at risk for there own linguistic pride!

Seems to me its OK to hire or employ a person based on a linguistic requirement...the Federal government does it all the time. It would be different if Heli-Inter were only hiring pilots from Quebec and refusing to hire one from BC who could speak french fluently.
If I were running a heli-ski operation in Quebec catering to customers from, say, Quebec, I would want pilots with the ability to converse in french. That's the reality and shouldn't be construed as infringing upon anybody's human rights...no need to "spank Frank".

I recommend a visit to Quebec if you think every busness owner can speak english, but, before you go I also recommend you learn the correct pronunciation of the word "poutine" unless fries with cheese curds and gravy aren't what your really looking for.

Canada is bi-lingual yes. Most provinces recognize English, New Brunswick is the only bi-lingual province and Quebec is strictly french. Strictly to the point where they have language police and all sorts of other 
.ensuring even private signs are in french only. The rest of the English provinces have most written things in both official languages [heaven forbid we offend anyone ] and you can always find somebody in a govt office that can parle vous en francais. Good luck getting someone in Quebec city to speak english to you, even though they seem to speak it very well when still within ear-shot.

If you were hiring a pilot for some BC Heli-Ski companies, it would be better to have someone who spoke Swiss, German, French, or Japanese as well. The number of non-english speaking guests is already high in some companies, and with the weak US dollar, it may be that english heli-skiers become even MORE rare.

Couple of comments on this thread sort of sound like its the West (English Speaking) vs. the East( Almost French Speaking)in Canada. Good to see our neighbors to the North have the same problems as we do here in the states.
I just voted for the President and had my choice of English or Mexican(Spaniards speak Spanish) Ballots......
