An honest dictator, eh? Corruption in Nigeria is so deep rooted it'll probably take centuries to clean up this mess...until then enjoy flying in the delta while it lasts

alouette,
Just a thought mate, that's all. How else will anyone put a stop to it ? The softly softly approach hasn't worked.

NEO. I don't deleieve there is a fix, It;s just very sad like some other parts of the World, and when the oil reserves are gone, it'll only get worse. It's inevitable. Ghana has it's own problems. But it doesn't have the huge population Nigeria has. And it is a problem that keeps increasing in size.

Which African countries have Offshore Helicopter Operators? I know of Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, Angola, Egypt and some north African Countries like Tunisia and Algeria.
I got 2500TT, 1000 Bell 212/Offshore with 150 PIC 212. Any chance for a job somewhere? I have not been flying commercially for over 1 1/2 years

Bitmonx,
If you're a Bell man and you have a current licence my advice would be to go for Bristow Nigeria. The pay isn't too bad and you wouldn't need a conversion etc, just a check ride and some line training.
By the way, there are offshore operators (well, one at least) in Mauritania too.
Cheers & Good Luck.

Helipolar, NEO,
Remember that while Jerry Rawlings may have twice booted out the sitting (and thoroughly corrupt and useless) government of the day in coups, when he became head of state it was in elections which were generally accepted as fair - and he was re-elected after his first term. So Mr. Rawlings was able to change Ghana for the better, using harsh measures where necessary, because the majority of the people wanted him to. Democracy in action.
When the majority of Nigerians become so fed up with the thieves in charge that they'll want to subordinate their own personal ambitions to the decisions of a leader (and this includes the regional, local, tribal and what-all struggles - Ijaws, Itsekiris, Ogonis, etc.) then things may change for the better. But not quickly, nor painlessly.
In my years in Nigeria I've met enough persons of great personal integrity to believe that such a leader can be found - if the people want it badly enough.

Buitenzorg,
Point taken, especially your last statement. It's really sad, the people who could make a difference are held down by those who don't want them to.
Cheers,

You know your point is well taken..all I am implying is that it requires a massive sweep out to halt corruption in this African paradise. Once that is accomplished maybe one should attempt to wipe corruption worldwide but that is too illusional. Corruption is like a disease; it comes, it goes, it comes,...

Anyone in Africa looking to hire an old washed up guy with 15000 hours? Lots of 212/412, offshore etc..but 59 years old. Still have my own hair and teeth tho...LOL
Seriously, do most of the operators over there subscribe to the age 60 is too old theory?

Foggy,
Whaddaya mean old and washed up at only 59?!!! Both Bristow and Aerocontractors have many pilots over 59 in Nigeria. Withy the Bell 212/412 it's OLOG/Bristow who'd more likely be interested in you.
You just need to be able to continue passing your professional checks and medicals and once you hit 60, there's a requirement for an annual stress ECG.
It's also possible to fly to age 65 in Sudan where CHC have an operation, though I think that's mostly Dauphins. I'd get your CV in to OLOG/Bristow and CHC as soon as possible. Good luck

Thanks for the response..I had been told that Bristow was enforcing an age 55 cutoff, and CHC was sending pilots home at age 60. Now, tell me about the golf courses!!

Foggy,
Mama is dead right. Put your CV in. With your background Bristow will definitely look closely. They let pilots go to 65 nowadays.
Good Luck

Foggy,
Eket (212/412 for Exxon Mobil) has one of the best golf courses in Nigeria.
At 59 I'd have thought you'd be helping to bring the average BHNL pilot age down (ably assisted by young whippersnappers like NEO!)

212man,
You flatter me mate but you're right, I'm one of the few keeping the average age down out here. So Foggy wouldn't have a problem IMHO. Try [email protected] with your CV.

re: What's New In W. Africa (Nigeria)
Funny thing about this internet and its anonymous postings. As long as most of us have been around, we probably know each other. At least we have many, many friends in common. I worked for Bristow back in the 70's, and it was probably the best company I have ever worked for. But with Alan out of the business now, it appears to be just another large corporation now.
