An almost all new management seems to be continuing as if nothing is amiss, with the Majah trying to micro-manage until the last dying days of his Raj with Wacko Jackoff trying to take that role over and interfere in everything while managing nothing.
Perhaps the Sun is finally setting on the last remnants of the Raj!

It will be official when he takes his Serviette from the rack in the Mess...folds it nicely and trundles off home to Blighty. Hope he remembers to book the Starboard side while heading home!

Perhaps he can wrangle a job with his old colleague who buys hair dye by the case....and who has found himself a back door to Paradise.

Malabo.....second and third families and various mistresses and concubines are very spendy things you recall! So give some of the guys a break...it is expensive spending a career in Nigeria on a touring schedule.

Malabo - do you count your fellow Canadian MD of Cavity Helicopters as someone who should leave Africa to the Africans?

There are certainly some good national Nigerian managers about - look at Bristow.

malabo,

Bristow has been sending young Nigerians abroad for years to replace the "whisky-soaked, over-the-hill expats" you talk about. They have had a sponsored training program for Nigerians for many, many years (their present MD, a Nigerian, was one of the early beneficiaries of this more than 20 years ago). Even now they have around a dozen guys (and girls) in USA being fully sponsored and are interviewing for the next lot. They even have one young Nigerian (also a product of the Bristow training system) as GM of their southern North Sea operation. The Shell Aviation Managers? Sheep, trained under a free Bristow sponsorship; KK, Bristow trained; Temi, Bristow trained. Chevron - Obi Wanobi, Bristow trained. XOM - Femi, Bristow trained; Big Mike, Bristow trained; Kehinde, Bristow trained. Do you see a trend here? Do you see any sponsored free under a CHC or Aero training scheme? Training Manager Shell Brunei, Bristow trained.

Do you think CaverDanscammer will offer the same? All they're doing right now is trying to poach pilots from Bristow, and more especially, Aero, because they don't have enough to start the contract. Aero had quite a few AW139 pilots - and didn't they do well on the Agip contract? I wonder why 139s aren't flying from Agip base in Port Harcourt now? MD of Caverscam, the dashing Jon Goulash with the perfect smile and hair - ex Bristow, he even got to be the Captain on a float plane! Operations manager, Sunny, ex-Aero. Chief Pilot, Dan ex Bristow. I expect they soon be joined on the AW139 by Pato, Akin, Udoma, Chris and a host of other stars from Aero.

Still, no matter what you're earning, Sunny will offer you even more, guaranteed and none of that tiresome Integrity or ethics $hit - you want your pay in a brown envelope in cash, no problem - they have a huge stash of brown envelopes ready for any occasion. After all, he's got the backing of the Man Can Jewellers, the wealthy and well-connected Yoruba muslim family which managed to get Lagos State Government to donate them a couple of top of the line 412s

Aero is now getting some short-term loans to keep the helicopters going, though they now have only one operating for Aero. Richard Inkwell is standing as tall as he can in his lifts and with the backing of the Ibrus - definitely not a family you want to $crew with - telling it to Agip and Total like it is . Still, nobody is kinda sure if he'll be around next week as he's an Ibru stooge, not a CHC stooge and there are rumors of them being so desperate, they're also talking to Caverscam. I see that going nowhere. Aero is in desperate financial straits, and even the Ibru money may not be enough to keep them going any more.

Where do the shadowy background figures of NN and Brave D'Allen fit in to all of this? Will they be part of the brave new world of CaverDanscammer? Maybe they'll be the new Head of Rotary Wing and Director of Training? NEO for CEO and SASless for the ethics committee say I

Me, I've already sent my resume to CaverDanscammer. My sort of company - no rules, no questions asked, no tax, no ban on cigarettes and whisky and wild-wild women in my room after 0630 - bring it on I say . I'm sure they'll like me, I'm a 40-something (well, you don't seriously believe the profile do you? ), milkshake-soaked, Africa hand with no scruples, morals or hair-dye habit and a pair of pointy shoes just waiting to see the light of day in public, with no need to hide them in the closet any more. I even have my own Bajaj . I'm ready for the game, locked and loaded and ready to be "one of the elite team of pilots and engineers to make this mission your own". I'm ready to "Join us as we develop the most modern and technologially advanced helicopter services in the world". Yo, Center of Excellence, no more Majah, no more Foamy Coolings, no more Wako Jacko, bring it on baby

I was an early proponent of moving Nigerians into Management a long time ago and you have named a fair number of the same people I endorsed to the folks down in Lafayette all those years ago. There are some very sharp Nigerians about the place and it only makes sense to have them involved in the long-term direction of the company. It would appear one mistake made by Bristow was keeping the old school British Mandarins hanging about the place as they have definitely outlasted their "sell by date". The long list of folks who have moved on is a sign of how many good people have moved on from Bristow and have found themselves in better situations. Ask them if they would come back to Bristow and leave where they are?

Now as having me for the Ethics Officer....no thanks! I prefer the collateral duty of being the "Couth Control Officer (CCO)" as I was a bonafide success at that in my Army days.

I am sure no matter how it shakes out the Nigerians will make out just fine and when a helicopter company....no matter which one it winds up being...adjusts to doing business in Nigeria and gets it right, it will be a huge success. Bristow used Nigeria for a Cash Cow for decades and if it had invested part of that money back into the operation it would not be in the situation it finds itself now. They did a lot of things right but also did a lot of things wrong. The management style and the way they treated people was not their strong suit by any description.

Thumbs down

SASless, you're letting your old prejudices show through again. All those guys who left went not because they didn't like Bristow, but because Bristow trained them, promoted them into training and managerial jobs and they then moved to oil companies like Shell, Exxon and Chevron which no helicopter operator could possibly compete with in terms of salary and pension.

You talk about Bristow not investing money back into the operation, but why do you think it has more S76 C++s than any other operation in the Bristow empire, or 2 new S92s? As for being a cash cow, that's the same for any company - they're there to make money in a difficult environment where security amongst other factors leads to high overheads. What is true is that they certainly haven't invested in anything in housing in Lagos, where the BRC is still absolute rubbish and managed worse than it ever was. The new management company which was due to have taken over last month didn't and the facilities are still lousy - rather like the second-rate new housing on the GRA.

If you think the new operators for Shell aren't there thinking it's a cash cow, think again. Rather like Arik - where did the money come from in the first place? Where do inshore oil tankers fit in to all of this? Remember their MD was part of the old school of PAAN.

Whiskey Soaked Expats

So all you whisky-soaked, over-the-hill expats get run out, what's the big deal? You want the Nigerians to be your insurance plan for mismanaging your life because as a highly-paid, tax-free, all expenses paid professional, you couldn't store enough nuts away for the winter?

From the young, Nigerian, aspiring pilot point-of-view, the sooner the better. They want your seats, and are entitled to them.

Africa for Africans

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

You forget these whiskey soaked expats made these companies what they are, making the places you think you can fill - I left Nigeria long ago and I am glad I did.

No one wants to stop progress and we all accept that the companies will go Nigerian, we can see that by Nigerians in some of the more important jobs in Bristow's Lagos. Dont worry Malabo - we will all be gone in a few years and you can get that chip off your shoulder.

Old Timer,

You make my case by describing the BRC and its history. Also consider the absolute lack of adequate investment in housing, hangars, repair facilities along the many years the company operated there. Perhaps if the company had done that kind of investment it would be in a much better situation now.

As to investing in aircraft....that is a result of the work....that investment had to be made to get the contracts. That is an investment that is fostered by commerical pressure rather than a committment to building a presence.

The only way you can describe the way the housing and catering has been done is "cheap" and at the direct expense of the staff who are out there making the revenue for the company. One has to admit....people do figure into the equation somewhere. You cut them short on basic standard of living issues and you pay for it in turnover and training costs.

When I talk of turnover....I am not talking of those who find better paying jobs with the oil companies directly but rather all those who made a decision to move on to other flying jobs that offered a better working environment.

Mike Norris one time told me in response to the question...."When will we go to Six and Six like so many other operators?" His reply which was honest and forthright was "When we can no longer man it on the Two and One roster."

As to "prejudice" or "bias".....you forget I spent many years in Nigeria and saw how it was run. I know how the games were played and how they adversely affected the running of the company.

There is no excusing "cheap" when comparing the things that were done to what would be considered proper business methods. Capital investment is a part of business....one has to invest into infrastructure to prosper.

Look at Air Log....and the investment they have made at Lafayette....then look at Nigeria and consider the difference.

Utilizing profits wisely is not what I mean when I use the term "cash cow" and you know it!

SASless - Since Bristow has just peaked at 80% of market share in Nigeria perhaps they have been doing something right since they became lessSAS! That share is going to drop but I guess Shell would rather be top dog at Cavity-Dancecopter's and keep their Shell Aviation advisers busy.

You need to realise that a lot of the invetment in New Iberia (which is almost Lafayette!) was milked out of the potential profits from Nigeria, Aberdeen, Trinidad and so on by the Louisiana Accountants and their little internal scams (plus supplemented by a few local government handouts).

Meanwhile at the Shell IAs the facilities are provided by Shell and reflect Shell's true attention on safety.

If you recall the Air Log African Adventure controlling PAAN was ended after a mire of tax scams, terminations and legal bills (and a missing aircraft too). Perhaps a timely reminder of what Cavity-Dancecopter's future might look like.

I stand corrected on New Iberia....having only been there a few times I casually lumped them into the same place as I had business at both places.

The fact Bristow wound up with an 80% market share probably has more to do with the downfall of the competition than the rise of Bristow don't you think? It is a zero sum game in Nigeria....as true competition is not the case compared to "normal" places around the world.

You are one hundred percent right about the wonderful Shell IA hangar, the Port Harcourt facilities as well as the Escravos and Eket locations. None have proper facilities as one would expect for longterm production and exploration bases.

That is my point about investment.

I am of the position Bristow all along should have invested in the construction of a proper airconditioned hangar and maintenance complex, incorporated a central training facility to create a real permanent presence in the Delta. That is what they did in Aberdeen, and Air Log did in New Iberia, and in Alaska. I am sure they did the same in Brazil which remains a successful venture for them.

When anyone says "Shell, Safety, and Nigeria" in the same breath....I just laugh!

Who has the bottomline responsibility to ensure safety....the Helicopter Operator or the Oil Company?

Ah SAS,

and you were last in Nigeria when? Surely at least within the last 10 years?

Nothing like hearing all about it from a really current pilot all, of whose opinions come from the same friends who managed to stay on here and who have the same biased and jaundiced opinions of Bristow and its management you had when you were last here Maybe some of them will fall victim to the changes which will surely come now - and who will you have to feed you information on your old boat then eh?

All of my "friends" as you call them....are long gone from Nigeria but it is interesting the "contacts" one makes over many years in the industry.

The question is not "where" the information comes from but how "timely and accurate" it is.

The Jungle Telegraph has always worked well....and will continue as is common when the natives get restless. You remember the old Tarzan films don't you.... guys setting around a campfire worrying about what is going on outside their camp as they listen to the beating of drums. Same thing in the helicopter industry.

Angel

Is it something I said Maybe this is what is needed to attract a bitious?

The whole Caverscam-ConDapter website has now changed. The home page now has a rather useless picture of a generic twin engined fixed wing (the famous Twinned Ooter perhaps?) and none of the links work (rather like Caverscam) except one for Aviation gps. This leads to a series of links including:

Free Live Video Chat
Looking for a Discreet Casual Encounter?
!00% Free Muslim Chat & Dating
The Best Muslim Dating and Chat Sites. Meet Muslim Singles Now
Free Online Dating
The Best Site for Meeting Hot Local Singles!

Maybe this is a reflection on the preferences of the Markandjeweller family or has to do with the Danish Color Climax thing

If you visit the sites none of them seems remotely linked to Shell, aviation or the oil industry - rather like the new company perhaps!

Apparently the daughter of the Executive Chairman of the Caverscam group, is also a pilot and recently got married in a lavish ceremony:

Last Saturday was a glorious day for the family of Makanjuola of Lagos and Barrister Adebayo Abiola from the popular late M.K O Abiola family of Abeokuta, Ogun State.

It was the day their children, Dr. Shakirudeen Oluwaseun and Captain Lateefah Ololade, daughter of the Caverton Helicopter boss, Mr. Aderemi Makanjuola, got married in grand style.
He's obviously not too hard up, despite having a bit of a dodgy bank balance

Non Performing Loans

Even if he takes a bit of a tumble he's guaranteed a soft landing as he's Chairman of Vono mattresses

Chief Remi Makanjuola is something of an academic and is due to be awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Minna on 5 June, with such luminaries as the late Maryam Babangida.

However, it seems that another of Chief Makanjuola's companies, Le Global Oilfield Services also has a non-performing loan of 235 million Naira with Spring Bank

Spring Bank Non-Performing loan 109

He probably fell a bit behind on the payments after paying to charter planes for friends to fly out to part 2 of his daughter's wedding in Dubai

Ah NEO,

As these are anonymous forums the origins of the contributions may be opposite to what may be apparent. In fact the press may use it, or the unscrupulous, or sciolists*, to elicit certain reactions.

Sadly, I'm not a bitious, so I certainly wouldn't measure up to what they require. I'll wait and see what they're offering and who's actually going to be doing the employing. If it's ConDapter, it may be worth a look, unless this partnership brings them down. Things in my little corner of Africa are not too bad right now.

Exclamation

I'm long since departed and I never post on this site, but in reply to Mama Lolo, you seem to be glad that Bristow have lost the Shell contract and that Bristow pilots who have submitted their CV's to DC are having it used as **** Paper. You seem to be unaware that contracts are unfortunately won and lost over the balance sheet of accountants and not over the level of service that is provided.
Although there may be few within a large group who's mouth I wouldn't piss in if their teeth were on fire, there are a much larger number who I would happily stand shoulder to shoulder with and call my friend. I wish them the best, and Mama Lolo don't let the 'cockhead' few cloud your judgement! Unfortunately you get them in all companies from top to bottom, and if you refuse to tolerate them from time to time, you'll spend a lifetime on the Dole!
