Instructing on different helicopter types

I'm a rotary FI(R), instructing part time on the R22. I had an R44 rating, but it lapsed a little over a year ago. The school I work for would like me to renew it, as they have a lot of students wanting to fly the R44. I could do this with around a couple of hours flying, and I could do with the extra work. The trouble is, I think I read in LASORS that you need 15 hours within the last 12 months on any type in order to instruct on it. But I now can't find that bit in LASORS, and no-one at the school seems to know anything about it. Does anyone know? And if you do, does it apply to the R22 and R44, which are so similar that 15 hours seems really over the top...to say nothing of the fact that I can't afford to pay for them. Anyone got any ideas?

eye-opener

Yikes. I knew crossing the Atlantic cost money, now I know (part of) why! It's the gummint! (assuming LASORS is a set of gummint regulations--speaking of which, is there a dictionary-glossary for translating between BritEnglish and ColonialEnglish?)

The equivalent requirement in USofA is 5hrs, and I thought THAT was gratuitous overkill.

[Costs: USA rental/self fly R22 $US200, friend in Norway reports returning from FL to continue in Norway, same ship $US450.]

A few months ago I was pointed out a section in JAR FCL that had been printed by mistake. Basically it said you can instruct on type even if you don`t have 15 hours on it.
I can`t think of the section at the moment but they were going to amend it but I don`t know when.

The person that pointed it out by the way was Fred Cross.

It`s worth looking in to.

tagg,

That sounds like just what I need! I don't have access to JAR FCL at the moment. Does anyone else know about this, or exactly where it is, or what it says?

I was in the same situation a few years ago. With the recommendation of the CFI and "in view of my total experience on the R44" (which then stood at about 50 hours PIC), the CAA kindly waived the 15 hour in last 12 months requirement.

Despite what is often on this forum about the CAA, they are not always hidebound by regulation so it would be worth asking your CFI to have a chat with a Mr Rob/Rod?? McGregor on your behalf.

Hope this helps

Probably Rob will not be able to help you on this (he works in GAD - Operations) but he will put you on to someone in Flight Crew Licencing who will.

Rob's number is 01293 573512.

Correction (you're right, JimL), on checking through the correspondance it was Ron Jenkins in FCL.

Thanks for that. I'll get the school to talk to Ron Jenkins for me.

Below is an extract from JAR FCL which to my reading says as long as you have passed a proficiency check your are exempt from the 15 hours requirement.

I copy and pasted the extract from the web so it should be up to date.

JAR–FCL 2.330 FI(H) – Privileges and requirements

[Provided that in the preceding 12 months the FI(H) has completed not less than 15 hours of flight instruction (which may include skill testing/proficiency checking) on single-pilot helicopters, or passed, as a proficiency check, the skill test set out in Appendices 1 & 2 to JAR-FCL 2.330 and 2.345,] the privileges of the holder of FI(H) rating (for restrictions see JAR–FCL 2.325) are to conduct flight instruction for [the issue of]:

(a) [a] PPL(H) [ ]
(b) [ ] a CPL(H), provided that the FI(H) has
completed at least 500 hours of flight time as a pilot
of helicopters including at least 200 hours of flight
instruction;
(c) [type ratings for single-pilot single-engine
helicopters]
[(d) a helicopter] night [qualification]
