Heres an idea, don't know why it has not been thought of. Get civvies to fly military machines. That way the grunts could concentrate on firing bullets. Lets face it military flying is usually only training, and not rocket science.

Yarpa,

Already happening, some would say that the RAF are civilians in uniform flying military machines.

Not me of course!

In Fact...................

Why not have civilian pilots, flying civilian observers about, directing civilian community support officers about on the ground !

Wait a minute !!!! We already do !

Save money, no armed forces, no police.......................Lots of civilians

Watch this space in the ever more cutthroat business of costcutting, sorry best value.................

Aren't civil policemen already civilians, as opposed to military policemen who aren't?

I really hope that is a wind up. let me think now civvies flying military in Iraq and Afgan how much would you be asking for that in wages? Just back and I can assure you it was not just "training, not rocket science" lot of rockets actually and not the nice type.

Depends on your definition of a civilian.. if its:
Given powers by the crown
MUST obey lawful orders
Not allowed a union
Not to take part in political activities
Swear Allegiance to the Crown under Attestation..

If so, then yeah.. just ordinary Joe public...

Mr Controller Sir,

First of all, you can look it up in CAP 612 (Sect 1, Chap 3 / 7 - I think) - available at the CAA publications website. Then contact the Air Support Unit you are interested in and ask if their PAOM Pt 2 has any requirements over & above those stated in the CAP 612.

PM me if you want more info.

http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/33/CAP612.PDF This way to the PAOM Pt 1. Section 1 Chapter 3 Para 8 gives you some detail but as Fortyodd said the Unit's Pt 2 is the authority. Some Units ask for 3000hrs.

Do a search on this forum as it has been covered numerous times.

From memory from a recent advert PAS had in Flight International within the past month, they look for 300hrs VMC low level, and 100hrs night PIC, which leads them to recruit almost exclusively ex-military pilots. I don't think an IR(H) was mentioned but I'd be fairly sure that it would be a major tick...

lynx,

There are lots of civilain pilots flying at Police ASUs so don't worry too much about the low level requirement. With the new generation of cameras going below 1500ft limits the number of lens that can be operated. Night flying is more important and we are not talking about twilight transits back to base but proper dark night flying.

Only one unit requires an IR (D&C), the Met are moving that way for their EC145s and Strathclyde pilots also fly Air Ambulance so some use their IR.

Having an IR costs money to keep current so most pilots have to let it lapse. Some operators, like PremiAir, will keep you current during the OPC as you've got a hours IFP as part of the PAOM requirement and they have an IRE.
