The golden rule in Police Aviation is - 'No Crabs' - They are much, much more trouble than they are worth.

IMHO of course.
I think most of the crabs go on to get proper jobs - IMHO

If you are a police pilot in Scotland I must know you.....

Yes, I'm sure you are correct and as we all know, most Teeny Weeny Airways Taxi pilots have trouble with crabs. ^^

There's one red hot crab floating around that you really don't want
So, if he's Cambridge, he must be the new UEO, 'cos all the pilots are ex AAC. Seemed like a nice bloke when he was here on his Observers course.

What's going wrong at the Met?

Rumour has it that yet another of their pilots has resigned. I think that's four in the last 6 months. It can't be the salary; from the Flight adverts they appear to be the best paying ASU in the UK.

Volrider,

Police flying is not just about pushing and pulling sticks, that's about 10% of it. He may be a good pilot but it doesn't mean he will make a good police pilot.

So C-Rick,

He's a good pilot and generally a nice bloke. What's the "hidden talent" then?

I think we have got one thing right down under. Police flying Police aircraft. Seems strange that you would have a civilian flying who knows nothing about Police work??!! Why not put civilians in Patrol cars as well. God forbid if they had to get their hands dirty and perform an arrest.

Ok I'll be the guinea pig and take the bait:

Whats the average experience level of your cop pilot?

Whats the average pay of your cop pilot?

Our civvy pilots dont get involved in police work - thats what the 2 x police officers are there for???

Dont image for one second it would go down well if the helo landed and the pilot got involved in the arrest. Who looks after the helo then?

There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to have a cop driver except one: cheap to run!!!
Any sane cop pilot would resign immediately on getting his/her quals and get a better paid flying job, surely.

A cop pilot operating in my area would last several weeks before he killed the entire crew in a night bad weather mountainous area tasking under NVIS.

You must be urban orbiters only

Well said TC.

Professional police officers to do the police work makes sense. Professional pilots to do the flying work makes even more sense.

Yarpa,

As a bobbie on a Police ASU, I believe we have the better system in this country. Two police observer's in the crew to concentrate on the Police incident and direct the piolt to our needs. This leave's the professional pilot to concentrate on what we call the piloty S**t, and keeping us in the air and the right way up, (or sometime the latter goes a miss but can be fun).
If the Home office suddenly tried to train us bobbies one it would be expensive, secondly the Bobbie would have to sign a long retainer contract to recoup the cost, and lastly flying experience would be missing for some years.
I'll stop talking up the pilots now as I can feel TC,MightyGem and our senior pilot's head's swelling.
I get airborne evreyshift knowing that the police work has my majority attention and the pilots has the flying and safety side in the forefront of his mind.
It's nice when the pilot occasionally spots the odd fast moving bogey on the ground, but I prefer it when they spot the Kite with the engine attached to it flying towards us.

The problem with a police officer in UK being trained to fly is that he/she would not have the minimum hours or experience required to fly the aircraft in the job!
