Maybe the mods might look at merging the "forgive me for asking a stupid question" thread onto this one.

I know not what experience the poser of that question has or whether it was planted in light of the very interesting thread that is running on the tragedy of the PHI S76 into the GOM.

But he certainly has got an answer or two, and in the same vein as that of Ascend Charlie's answer, to be seen in this thread.

Whether it was planted or not, and in conection to the PHI S76 disaster, one must question as to whether the passengers on any helicopter would feel safer with the pilots wearing good helmets, especially if they be plying the same flight lanes as that of the heavy feathered varieties.

I certainly would if I were a passenger in that area.

I don't know how many feathered types ply the North sea routes but at the coastal sections there must be a few, most times of the year and I gather that not all of those flights are at nose bleed altitude.

Although all NS windsceens would be the stronger glass to cope with the cold, cold ice I guess.

Twice I have hit galahs (approx 400 - 500 grams) at eighty knots dead centre in a G5 and they bounced off each time. One bloke got an eagle through his 3B1 bubble one day, but I would hate to be any faster, or in a Robinson with the same test.

I don't understand the argument of being uncomfortable. I too wear a helmet every day, I have worn mine for 10 hours straight, (Quick stop for lunch and pee) and carry on, with hot fuelings.

No worries, your hair needs a comb after, but that is it. Biggest deal was that the seats in the jetbox are soooooo darn uncomfortable.

Helmet / flight bag advice

Hi all

I have a flight bag which is ideal as it can take my helmet, various odds and ends and has a large pouch on the side where my laptop lives. I really like it except for the fact that the fabric quality is absolutely disgusting, to put it lightly. It is literally falling apart and every time I take my helmet out some of the lining of the bag follows it.

I am looking for a replacement and would appreciate some advice, specifically to buy in the USA. I don't trust my helmet in checked luggage so I carry it with me when going anywhere on the airlines and I carry all my valuables in the same bag.

Requirements are :
Sling so I can hang it over my shoulder
Central compartment for my helmet, gloves etc, preferably padded
Compartments for GPS, power cords etc
Compartment for the laptop

I am in the utility field so I need something tough as the bag gets moved a lot between the helicopter, vehicles and hotel rooms. I have looked on various websites and there are many bags available but since I cannot feel the quality of the material or padding I cannot tell how good they are hence the need for personal experience in your advice.

Thanks in advance

I am in the same position as you. I found it better to separarate the two. I use two bags---one for my helmet and a separate one for my computer.

This for my computer and accessories. And

This, model 8402 for my helmet.

This one here may suit your combined needs, although I have never seen one.

I'm always on the lookout for the perfect bag, and have never found it. I would be interested in what you come up with.

One thing that makes my life easier is that I'm using an Asus EEE-PC, which is small and light, and uses a solid-state flash drive instead of a spinning magnetic hard disk drive. I carry it in a small case sold for portable DVD players. With the power cable and everything else, it weighs about a kilogram. I'll never buy another full-size laptop. For a helmet bag, I'm using a FSI bag they give away to hold the 1/4 ton of books they supply for the S76 course. It's not padded, but it's relatively strong, and I have no other use for it, plus I'm too cheap to buy a dedicated helmet bag.

Gordy shows a link to helmet bags. The one listed as 8401 is probably the most universal. I have always used one and never had a problem, but thats only in 39 years in helicopters.
I know of nothing that gives ultimate protection and do remember seeing one of my skid lids as it passed me by on the freeway after falling off the back of my bike many years ago. it did pretty well, until it was hit by a truck. I didnt even stop....
Headsets are a different story and one bag that now holds all my survival toys is found here :BrightLine Pilot Flight Bag - MyPilotStore.com

Price is competetive.

There are more of course. Flight Bags from MyPilotStore.com - Your Pilot Supplies Store

If you find that "I cant do without it bag", please let us know before I retire .

Wow, that brightline bag is the business. You'd be able to fit a little netbook in there no problem also. Pity there is no room for the helmet.

At HAI I came across a great stand called Eagle Industries. They have the Apache helmet bag, I have ordered one but am waiting for it to turn up.

The one on the stand was very hard wearing, much better than the ones that come with the brain bucket.

Thanks B Sousa for the ticket!

Thanks for the replies so far. Has anyone used a Jeppesen "Captains bag" and how do you like it?

Zuluworks also make a bag called a "Gazelle", anyone have one?

Gentex SPH 4

Forgive me for not reading all 29 pages.
I bought a Gentex SPH 4 on ebay just because I like its look. Would like to know if it is the worth to use it or better put it on a shelf and keep on using the head set. It is fully working, very comfortable and sound protection amazed me, but somebody told me that with that weight I will save my skull but break my neck...
All info and comments appreciated.
Thanks

It's heavier than the SPH5, but if it fits correctly and all the components are in working order it's certainly a fine piece of kit. Can the weight of it break your neck? Sure. Then again, the weight of your head by itself can do that.

If you wear a helmet then your passengers should wear one too. Would you like to see the crew get onboard with parachutes and you don't have one?

Hedge36, thanks for your reply.
My helmet fits perfectly, It just needs repainting only for cosmetic need, I saw somewhere in the web a company that refurbishes gentex helmets but I can't find it anymore.
Anybody knows one?

Lama Bear, as many other said, It could be embarassing to hear these questions from passengers, but I believe It's not a good reason not to wear it. We are exposed 1000 times more than them. They will not share with us our risk once they get off the chopper.
