I would vote against ANR. There are certain things a pilot needs to hear!

In a recent R22 crash, the fact that the pilot was wearing ANR was described a contributary factor!
Could you explain why the ANR was contributory ?

If memory serves right, the only recent-ish R22 incident where ANR *may* have played a part is where an experienced fixed wing pilot oversped an R22 to the point where the tailboom fell off.

ANR was suggested as a possible factor but I can't remember precisely why.

Just found the accident link - http://www.aaib.dft.gov.uk/cms_resou...pdf_501499.pdf

[QUOTE=22clipper]Yeah I had to surrender my Gentex for a Bose when I got too deaf to hear ATC properly, but I miss my bone dome. I briefly considered removing the Bose earpeices to fit into the helmet but the Bose has complex ports on the outisde of the earpieces & I was concerned the relocation might compromise the ANR.

I have a Gentex also and retrofitted it with an ANR kit with no problems. Now I have all the benifits of ANR with my bone dome.

I cannot remember the supplier, but they are at Maroochydore airport and advertise in the Aviation Trader (in Australia). It was significantly cheaper than the original models. I think about AU$300.00 approx.

Tom Boyd at Global aviation (unsure of the phone no.) is based in maroochydore, supplies and can fit ANR kit to helmets. around $700 fitted. works well but you'd be well advised to buy shares in Duracell..

I find that I get about 5 hours with that particular kit.
Try buying some rechargeable 9 Volt batteries (these have lastested literally for years - having kept recharging them).
Also, you can actually fit 2 x 9V batteries in the battery box. (a bit of soldering and a extra lead and now you have approx 10hrs).
I also have 2 boxes, so one is always charged.
If you want to go all out, there is an adapter you can hard wire to the aircraft.
Just some options. Better than no ANR at all.

Thumbs up Helmet Power

With this helmet revolution which seems to be taking place, can't we get some purchasing power through our PPRuNe links ?
I wouldn't want to ride my bike without one, and beginning to feel I want to fly with one too.
I'm sure lots of stick will be handed out but hey, I'm used to it.
The underlying thread seems to be that if you can still think, you can still land ?!?!

As I recall Bell also published a warning about ANR and the possibility of it hiding the low rotor RPM warning horn on the B206. It woiuld be interesting to know if anyone has done any proper tests, rather than just voicing opinions..........

Helinut

having just done a number of engine off's of various descriptions whilst testing line pilots I can tell you that I heard the low RRPM horn fine everytime in the jetranger whilst wearing an Eagle Alpha with ANR from headset services. Mind you not all 206's have low RPM horns so do remember to check them in the checks and that will also reassure you that the ANR is not masking anything.

Just a quick note on ANR. I believe that part of the ANR nose reduction principal is that it takes an average of the (approx) the last 5 Seconds noise and uses that for the cancelation. Hence when you turn your ANR on it is a few seconds before it goes quiet.
So on that theory you should be able to hear a warning horn for 5 secs. Then it may disapear or become quieter.

Alpha Eagle

After 20 years I finally retired my SP4 and purchased an Alpha Eagle. Great looking helmet, comfortable, but that was about it. Two trips back to supplier to get audio fixed, now I need a new dark visor because the visor cover on the new Eagles is not as rigid as the cover on the 200 series and when the helmet is carried in a helmet bag the cover rubs against and scratches the visor. Not happy!

Paint Job

Can anyone recommend somewhere to get a military green alpha painted, just a single colour, no fancy graphics required. Prefer Perth, but rest of Australia also considered.

If you're in the UK, you could use Mart Aviation.

I don't know them personally, but judging by the website they seem to know what they're doing and service their second-hand bone domes before selling them on.

Not sure if a link's allowed, but no doubt a mod will delete it if it's not:

Helmet Visor Colours?

Hi everyone

Does anyone have any advice or experience of which helmet visor colours work best?

I have the option of: Clear and tinted or Yellow and tinted.

All opinions welcomed
