Helmets - Should you? and Which?
I always use yellow and tinted.
The yellow is good when flying in white-out conditions which we have a lot of here in Greenland.
I agree with above if you fly much a night in birdstrike prone areas that a clear visor would be a good idea.
The yellow visor doesn´t really help much if there is no contrast at all, but if there is any little contrast the yellow will help to make it stand out more clearly.

Rose coloured seems to be the choice of management level staff.

I been told about an army huey that lost part of a blade while warming up, the level of vibration was so high that the pilot who didnt wear a helmet died from breaking his neck.
I think all companies must buy helmets for all pilots and engineers the same way a civil engeniering company provides helmets for his workers.

I have been wading through masses of web pages looking helicopter helmets for sale (Gallet and Alpha eagle)… If anybody can help me with some links or heads up on prices… (The Best I have got is ₤995.00 on a Alpha eagle).. is this about right for Alpha’s? I am looking for a new helmet and want to order one ASAP,

I have just bought an Alpha Eagle helmet and I can tell you the prices are as follows:
Standard helmet £975 + VAT (inc. headset, clear & dark visor, US NATO plug, Coiled lead & Boom mic)
ANR £320 + VAT
ANR Battery box £95 + VAT
Yellow visor (instead of clear) About £50-60 + VAT I think???
Not cheap, but definitely worth it!
I bought mine from Headset Services Ltd at Shoreham Airport http://www.headsetservices.com/ Speak to Mark Panton.
If you opt for a standard colour, you are more likely to get one quicker. I opted for white which they have in stock. Otherwise it is about an 8 week wait. If you have ANR, it takes about 2 weeks for the ANR to be fitted etc.

thanks for the heads up on that, I have had a chat to Head Set services and I might head down and have a look… dose anybody know the name or contact details of any UK based company selling Gallet helmets? I tried to ring the number the have listed on the internet (distributor) but no one even answered and I also e-mailed them about a week ago with no success

I have 2 alpha helmets for sale, both originally supplied by Headset Services. (ie not ex-mil!) One is white, one is blue. Both used, (by me only) but in very good condition.

I bought an Alpha from Headset Services a year ago and it has been well worth the money. Mine has both a dark and yellow visor, and an ANR kit. The yellow visor is amazing, and the ANR really does work.
After nearly a year, the visor had been repeatedly scratched by the visor cover when using it, and when I asked HSL about replacing it, they said it was a known fault of the visor cover - they replaced it on the spot under full warranty with a real carbon fibre cover - great service. I believe the new helmets don't suffer this problem because Alpha have modified the visor cover slightly.
I was going to buy a Gallet, but somebody I know bought one and hated it, so I went for the Alpha, and love it. However, I'm sure the Gallet is still a good helmet and it's probably personal preference!

I have one,
Fly in it a tonne, fits great, is light, and very comfortable. Did 8hrs yesterday, don't even know it's there. That said, different for everyone, so try all types to get the best fit - that IS the most important thing.

If you ever intend getting on any government contracts, there are only certain types approved, namely:
B8.2.3.4.1 An aviator’s flight helmet, consisting of a one-piece hard shell made of polycarbonate, Kevlar, carbon
fiber, or fiberglass, must cover the top, sides (including the temple area and to below the ears), and the rear of the
head. The helmet shall be equipped with a chinstrap and appropriately adjusted for proper fit. Flight helmets for
helicopter usage must conform to a national certifying agency standard, such as DOT, Snell-95, SFI, or an
appropriate military standard, and be compatible with required avionics (see section B8.2.6.4.3). “Shorty” (David
Clark style) helmets are not approved. Flight helmets currently meeting this requirement are the SPH-3, SPH-4,
SPH-5, SPH-4B, SPH-8, HGU-56 and HGU-84. Helmets designed for use in fixed wing aircraft do not provide
adequate protection for helicopter occupants and are not approved for helicopter use.

Gordy thanks, I have info on specs, but getting varying reports on the user friendlly side. Id like to hear from guys who are using alphas, gentex, and gallets, to hear their ideas.
To nick, and revolutionary..... yeah its not too easy to edit the title is it. As far as you are concerned Nick, I would have expected more. As for you rev, did you take that photo in the mirror?
Now like a lot of these pprune sites, lets not have a barrage of answers which waste each others time, or try to prove how smart (arsed) we can all be. What about some real feedback.

Part way through a purchase of over 50 Alpha Eagle helmets. Only problem encountered was an eye relief adjustment problen when fitting Anvis 9 NVG's to the helmet using the supplied rigid visor. Visor has now been modified by Helmets Integrated and appears to have all been fixed. All who are using the helmet have commented favourably wrt comfort, ease of adjustment, ability to wear for long periods without developing hot spots. Hope this helps.
