Question All you frozen ATPL's 2....

Having read that informative thread...

I was interested in your experiences regarding applications.

I have an issued ATPL 1500+hrs MCC current FI rating etc. Every month I send around fifty CV's to all types of company. I get around twenty replies throughout each month, 15 of which are flat refusals " we are not recruiting, we will not keep your cv, F*** off and die...oh, and we wish you every success"

I get three or four "we are not currently recruiting but we will keep your CV on file.."

And I occasionaly get an application form to fill in. My tip for this month is Channel Express, Cathay and TNT.

A brief note on Ryanair - I have paid my £50 'processing fee' and yet after two and a half weeks, they are unable to even muster an acknowledgement. There's value for money! And I look forward to paying them £150 if they decide to interview me, and I will be more than happy to pay £15000 for my own type rating upon being offered the job........ I don't think.

Look forward to hearing from you.

I know the feeling well as I too am almost in the same boat (sinking boat). I'm off to do the Instructor Rating shortly. But even that may result with just another rating to keep current.

Regarding FR, still no reply from them. Also sent them a fax as dictated on their website, and as of yet still no reply.......is this just a scam to kick us in the teeth when were already down, or do FR have any jobs on offer at present????

Thumbs up

Do the FI rating, It's the only flying work you can get at the moment!

Oh, and you shouldn't need to worry about keeping it current because by the time it expires after two years, you'll be sick of instructing any way ( if you haven't got a job by then... harhar).

Can you imagine how many CVS each airline is receiving at the moment?. .There are plenty of unemployed pilots with Boeing and Airbus ratings and years of experience who are also looking for jobs.. .My tip to you is. .a) don't send 50 CVs a month - follow what a particular airline is doing. If its still shedding staff/ aircraft/ routes they will not want to be receiving CVs.

b) target your experience to the airline. There are publications available which give an indication of the minimum experience required for each airline. No point sending your CV to BA right now for example.

I know you feel you need to do something, but spend the time in preparing for when the market does pick up.

Don't hassle the airlines with a replacement CV every month, that will wind them up. If you have a new rating to add or substantial change in experience then send a new CV for that reason. Otherwise I suggest you limit your CV sending to once every 6 months, or every 3 months for more relevant airlines.

Grandad Flyer, Thanks for the helpful advice. To which publications were you referring, which give an indication of the minimum experience required for each airline?

Oops- spell check before clicking go!

Join BALPA and/or the IPA. They have cheap, associate memberships for people in your position, and publish a great deal of useful, Wannabes-type info. There used to be an organisation called Copilot Publications that used to do the same, but I'm not sure if they still exist.. .Anyone know?

Grandad,

In addition to working as a flying instructor, getting every flying hour possible and contacting potential employers on a regular basis, how would you suggest that I could spend my time better? I feel like I am doing every thing I can to identify the companies that might be taking on.

I agree that flooding the market with a standard letter may not be ideal but you have to spread yourself around at first to see which companies can be bothered to write back to you.

Cool

Ive stopped sending mass cvs out. Try walking through the door and actually meet the chief pilot if you can. This will have many benefits: 1)He/she has to reply. 2)He/she can give you the low down on the company and any possible recruitment plans 3)If you dont like what you see you dont have to come back. 4)Your name and face has been seen. You are no longer a pile of paper.

If your circumstances allow, make it clear you are interested in working in the ops or handling departments at a company. A foot in the door and all that....

You should be very wary of flooding the market with CVs every month. Those airlines with an HR department switched on enough to file on computer will quickly catch on that you are a serial CV poster, and delete you from their 'possibles' list. DO NOT PlSS THESE PEOPLE OFF!!. .As Granddad (!) says, update your CV, say, six-monthly, or if there is a significant change to report, and perhaps ring up every couple of months (unless you are requested not to).. .The fact is that there are very few jobs of any description out there just now, and you won't be invited to interview if you've upset/bored/besieged the Chief Pilot's PA - there are plenty of other, less troublesome pilots to invite!. .At the moment, walking up to an airline's offices and asking to see the Chief Pilot isn't likely to work. Companies' security just will not allow casual visitors to walk in; you will need an appointment to get past the doorman.. .Right now, you have to be patient and lucky. A bit of inventiveness doesn't hurt, but don't become a pain in the a*se!
