Useful Mnemonics
Hi guys,
I know a couple of mnemonics that are quite useful. I have listed them below. Please feel free to and do add your own.
There are two whose expansions I don't know. They are FIRA and HASSELL(sp). Any idea what their expansions are?
C-GUMPS ("see-gumps") - Controls, Gas/fuel, Undercarriage, Mixture, Propellor. Useful before takeoff, turning onto final and practicing maneuvers.
4Cs ("four sees") - Climb, clean, cool then communicate. Should be done after takeoff or a go around. Climb = positive rate. Clean = gear, flaps, etc. Cool = engine power reduction. Communicate = Establish contact w/ ATC.
5Ts ("five tees") - Time, twist, turn, throttle, talk. Time = start clock. Twist = HDG/CRS bug adjustment. Turn = obvious. Throttle = Speed adjustment. Talk = contact ATC if needed. Useful before entering a holding pattern and certain approach procedures.
Please share any that you may know.

There's tons of Mnemonics out there, but I find the 5 t's a little excessive. Everyone I have every known sticks to three t's, TURN, TIME, TALK simply as an order of priority when flying, i.e. don't get distracted by the radio before you've even flown the turn, and remember to start a watch coming out of the turn.
I don't think twist or throttle add anything here, and could lead to a student forgetting something important while trying to remember the mnemonic. What are you doing with the throttle after a turn anyway?
There's the 7 p's though, proper prior planning prevents piss poor performance
Not really a mnemonic but "Reds, Blues, Greens" is a good last check on short finals to check you have the correct prop and mixture setting and gear down.

HASELL was taught at my flying school as..
Height, Airframe, Safety/Secure, Engine, Location, Lookout
Used before stalls, aeros etc

My all time favourite is this one for engine failure in piston twins:
F - Forward (all engine levers)
U - Up (everything that is still down like gear and flaps)
C - Clean the aircraft (attitude, speed, trim, power setting)
K - Kill the failed engine (i.e. shutdown and feather according procedure)
Apart from this, I always only use RTPC (Read The Printed Checklist)

U - Up (everything that is still down like gear and flaps)

K - Kill the failed engine (i.e. shutdown and feather according procedure)

No mnemonic...
trigger safe
select gun(s)
weapon aim mode (inertial or laser)
late arm on
trigger live (when pointing at target)
squeeze - PULL....
Remember - a real aeroplane has a trigger.

I believe I may have found what FIRA stands for. It is used when approaching an airfield. F - fuel, I - instruments, R - radio, A - altimeter.
I cannot confirm whether this is the exact expansion though...

MOSTA during climb out every 500'
M = manifold pressure
O = outside air temp (ice check)
S = suction (suction gauge positive)
T = t's & p's
A = Altimeter (QNH QFE or 1013)
FREDA en route
F = fuel sufficient & balanced
R = Radio correct freqency, next frequency, volume check
E = t's & p's & carb heat if req
D = DI and compass aligned
A = Altimeter
BUM FREDA on approach
B = brakes off
U = Undercarriage down and locked
M = Mixture Rich
FREDA as above but F incs fuel pump/s on
Reds blues greens whites on finals
Reds = mixture rich confirm
Blues = props forward/fine
Greens = gear locked
Whites (switches) = Lights/mags/fuel pump/s
All used in addition to the check lists

C... compass hdg
D... Deviation
M... Magnetic hdg
V.... Variation
T... True hdg
Plus the dev or var to get magnetic or true hdgs east=+.

FIRAD for pre-descent in a training jet long ago
Fuel
Instruments
Radio
Altimeter
Demist
For ILS approach, STIF Quim
Select
Tune
Identify
Fail flags away
QDM dialled in
but this has all been done before on PPRuNe, just need to search...
Never heard of that one...

SCUDO- static blocked climb under read descent over read,
PCODU- Pitot blocked climb over read descent under read,
Compass error in Northern hemisphere
ANDS accelerate compass turns towards north and thee opposite for south
and the inverse for southern hemisphere
Turning errors,
COSUN compass overshoot south and undershoot north in northern hemisphere
and the inverse for southern hemisphere

Something from flight school for working out compass turns:
Northern Hemisphere:
UNOS - Undershoot North, Overshoot South
Southern Hemisphere:
ONUS - Overshoot North, Undershoot South

ABCCD for the Location part of HASELL above. Clear of;
Airfields
Built up areas
Controlled airspace
Clouds
Danger Areas
HELL - abbreviated HASELL check for further stall/high G maneouvre
BUMPFFICH for downwind check;
Brakes - off
Undercarriage - down & locked
Mixture - rich
Prop - fine
Fuel - pump on, in balance & sufficient
Flaps - as required
Instruments - check Ts & Ps, DI
Carb - heat on
Hatches & Harnesses secure
and generally, the 6 Ps;
Perfect Planning Prevents P**s Poor Performance
