Petition to Support Trainee Pilots

I found this on the Downing Street website:

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Pilot-training/

Its one of the government's new e-petitions requesting that a proper financial support system be set up to enable pilots to train.

Here is the blurb from the petition:

“Unlike Lawyers, Doctors and University undergraduates etc. Pilots lack the necessary support and funding needed to train as pilots and gain the amount of experience needed to obtain their first job. I think the Government should back a drive to assist with funding for Pilot training in the form of student loans or something similar in the way university students are helped with their choice of career. Why not Pilots?”

Take a look, if you agree with it there is no harm in signing it! At the time of posting there were only 194 signatures, surely more people than that think this is a good idea.

As PottleKettleBlack asks... so you think this is a good idea? Surely with some thought you can deduce that this is a bad idea because it will work against most pilots who really want a shot at that job. When government pays for anything it wants to extract as much publicity and political support from it as possible.

Such a petition is best kept away from politicians who after all are good at next to nothing in life other than scheming and standing on other people's sacrifice. Just get a plan together and get on with your training. You'll no doubt come across all manner of hurdles in your latter career where you'll have to fend for yourself without government nor public help. Besides getting help means having to give something back in return. If you really want them to help you could consider the armed services, there are a variety of positions as aircrew not just pilot and that would stand you in good stead.

Agree with the posts above. I am back to square 1 with my 'Flight Training savings' after getting an apartment (on my own).

But I know I can get the £40k it's just a matter of time and commitment. Time and commitment that maybe my competition can't/don't want to put in.

There is no shortage of low time students in holding pools and sending out CV's so why do we need anymore? I'd love the government to pay half of my £40k bill but I'm sure we'd see ?,000's of student on here with a fATPL looking for jobs/advise.

Crikey! Those who have signed it really need to think what they are trying to achieve. I don't believe a scheme such as this will ever materialise but imagine if it did. At the moment the guys and girls coming out of training, are going to be on the whole, a rather dedicated bunch who have had to work hard both at the flying and the penny pinching. (There are of course some who are fortunate in terms of personal wealth, but I would imagine most have worked and saved and sold body parts to fund the training). If there were to be some sort of government scheme to reduce the financial hurdles the number of people training would increase, and would most certainly include many who aren't quite as passionate but doing it anyway.

That all important first job would become infinitely much harder to find.

Fortunately I am quietly confident that such a scheme will never be introduced by the government, but people please just think before signing something.

I agree with boogie-nicey, get a plan and get on with it. There are plenty out there who are working hard to get into the first job and you lot are trying to open the flood gates.

I too am with the "not" signing it. You want to know why?

Well ask yourselves this. why SHOULD the government help people chase a vocation?
Is there a shortage of new pilots? No.
Is there a projected shortage? no.
Is it a critical career requiring academic support (like a medical degree)? No.

The bottom line on all of this, is that this is essentially saying "it's expensive and and I don't want to have to save for it - I WANT IT NOW!". Well, the truth is, if you want this it's up to YOU to go and get it. Not up to anyone else to pay for it. If the government start paying for pilot training, then what about other vocational? direct comaprisons like bus driver, boat pilot, HGV training are obvious, but you want to become a project manager, a tree surgeon...all of these things require funding...and it's either by yourself or by a sponsoring company.

If you want to do something about this - (try and) get the ariline companies to resume sponsorship - at least this way, it will come down to who the airlines want, rather than a couple of thousand more fATPLs with no real chance of a job...

Do I want however many 1000 more competing for the same job as me? NO!

If you want the job put up with the financial risk.
