Small Air Law Q
I know this has been done to death but as per usual contradictory info causes me to seek help from the helpful:
On what frequencies may an ATIS be transmitted?
a) On VOR, NDB and ILS.
b) On available VHF frequencies VOR and NDB.
c) On VOR only.
d) On VHF communications frequencies only.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Cron.

In 20 yrs of flying (globally in various oufits), only ever heard it on VHF and VOR. You can use the ILS as an emergency voice frequency from the ATC view point if needs must. However, VHF and VOR only is not an answer, I have looked at several referances for you and definitely not NDB or ILS, sorry but thats the real world answer. So C & D is the correct answer unless you got the answers typed in wrong.
Happy hunting. (ex 74/34/33/73/etc)

CW are you saying that ATIS is available on Voice Channel of ILS? Thank you for consulting the references and for your considered answer. I guess you can see the confusion I'm having. I've quoted the Q correctly but hope to be corrected.

If we eliminated NDB as an option (as NDB not VHF but HF), and we know that ATIS IS broadcast on VHF (most major airports do so) then we have disposed of A, B and C, leaving D as the last man standing? The key point being ATIS is a VHF service
I just cross checked this with the GTS notes and they say "...on a discrete RTF frequency or in conjunc with an appropriate VOR". Also (explicitly) not on the voice channel of ILS.
Note this is UK, may be different in far flung places, but it is a JAR/UK exam..

The ICAO definition does not mention the means of propagation:
"The provision of current, routine information to arriving and departing aircraft by means of continuous and repetitive broadcasts throughout the day or a specified portion of the day."
B is correct. C and D are clearly wrong, as is A, because it is issued on available VHF frequencies.

NDB is designated NON, A1A and A2A. There are no voice channels available, only morse at best.
ILS is designated A8W, VOR A9W and VHF Comms A3E. These three have a voice channel. So any answer that includes NDB is wrong.
Only C and D are possibilities. Given this conundrum I would got for D on the strength that it is the most common medium and appeal. What else can you do?

Just found this that suggests ATIS is available over NDB.

I don't see why not - I can pick up Radio 4!
Answer B is already in my Canadian pilot study book, and I did that ages ago, so I must have got the info from the Canadian IR

I've listened to weather on NDBs before, granted it was in FAA-land, and it was AWOS or ASOS.
I guess it's a matter of semantics, but the way i would read the first line, it does not say NDB is on a VHF frequency.
b) On available VHF frequencies VOR and NDB.

This Q is bugging me now. Does it come down to the placement of a comma?
I've been through the latest Jepp IR publication and cannot find any ATIS service on an NDB (only on VOR, Specific VHF freq and on UHF (mil as all mil fields?)
More "agggh!"
