Whatever, it's still among the "best shows in town" ! Can rely on it to lift the spirits on a dull day, now I always look in on it right after "Caption Competition" (advt) on "Military Aviation" (good for a chuckle, too).

Danny.

PS: "Best of British" to young Lachlan, and his nice aeroplane, too ! Happy landings laddie !

Mike Flynn 24th Jul 2016 20:33

The big question is will the HCAP give Lachlan the same Masters Medal they plan to give her:ok:

Given the criteria in the original letter from past Master Chris Ward and the press release from the current Master Peter Benn Lachlan qualifies on both counts by the time he reaches Biggin Hill later this week.

The big problem they face is one pilot is a genuine solo long distance adventurer flying what is likely to become a world record.

The other is a highly sponsored well publicised woman claiming to be a solo 'Aviatrix' who has been making a couple of fictional reality tv programmes. To make matters worse she is trying to claim a circumnavigation. Some would suggest TCT's social connections and PR machine have played a major part in her current status.

The question is who would you vote for as an inspirational aviator?

Just thinking on this whole outreach thing. I do a bit of outreach - I just consider it part of what I do. I know people who do huge amounts of it (my friend Lucy Rogers, who as of this evening is the new presenter on Robot Wars is an excellent, but by no means isolated example. Carol Vorderperson with the Air Cadets is doing a lot also.)

This sort of outreach usually means numerous talks at festivals, school visits, hours on end on stands doing simple experiments with children that helps them develop and understanding and passion about science / aviation / mathsandstuff. And, usually, endless dull-but-essential committee meetings, evenings preparing material, and so-on.

We know about a handful of high profile orchestrated visits mentioned on Wikipedia. But what real time consuming activity has La TCT really done in this regard?

There is absolutely no doubt that TCT is a good speaker. She tells a mean story, is very persuasive and is totally believable. She is a female version of the very working class Anthony Charles Lynton Blair. And like Blair, she describes the world as she sees it. I think she also shares his extreme level of arogance. But because we are too stupid and ignorant to see things the way she does, her alternative view of reality has lead us to the reason this thread has started.

But I don't think she will change. Her total belief in herself and her understanding of the way things are means that she will continue to spout the bo!!ocks she does, pick up the cash and take the accolades. Worse, those who dish out the cash, awards, gongs etc. love people like her. Give her any kudos and you get repaid in lots of gushing thank yous, pleanty of fawning and associated "I'm not worthy" quotes. Yet she'll still take it, because she thinks she is worth it and has earnt what has just come her way. I'll also suggest that she is likely to be sure that she is right that you will never change her mind.

Only when her cash dries up will she stop. So we should follow the advice in criminal movies with fraud cases and that is "follow the cash". Stop her cash and then we can put this thread to bed.

Mike Flynn 24th Jul 2016 21:07

I have to agree PM with your assessment. Blair and Kinnock peddled the same self enriching rhetoric.

Tracey Curtis Taylor really let the young people of Hull down last week by not flying the Spirit of Artemis to Humberside.

She claims to be emulating Amy Johnson but the VFR trip from Farnborough on a fantastic day was something she dismissed.

She also failed to fly to Portsmouth to collect her token degree.

I doubt that Stearman will be going far over the next few months a she treks around the speaking circuit.

It pretty obvious she loves flying, classic aircraft in particular, you need money to do that and unless she's personaly wealthy or has a sugar daddy (granddaddy) she has to go thru the motions of what her sponsors expect of her in return for writing the cheques. So she is probably going to do the absolute minimum amount of meeting and greeting the great unwashed masses possible, just enough to get her ticket punched by her paymasters, then it's back in the plane for some fun.

Jetblu 24th Jul 2016 21:21

This so called 'outreach' programme with schools and venerable young children.....Would any decent parent here, knowing what we do, want our young children anywhere near her? I wouldn't.

Whilst I accept that I have told my children about Father Christmas. which could be considered as a deceit, I said it for the magical purposes and not for any financial reward or recognition.

Can you imagine a young one asking her..."Did you fly solo on your own?"

TCT Answer ..." Oh yes!! [nodding like the Churchill dog]

....and for the teenagers following, it is promoting fraud and deceit with honourable recognition and royal approval, no less.
Amazing. You just couldn't make it up.

It is interesting to look at true women aviation pioneers.
Jean Batten did England to Australia in just over two weeks.

http://cdn.images.express.co.uk/img/...ten-650287.jpg

However the story did not have a happy ending.

Jean Batten had just beaten the women’s record for a solo flight from England to Australia by almost five days. Her achievement captured the attention of the world’s media and congratulatory telegrams poured in from all quarters, including royalty and even one from British aviator Amy Johnson – the pilot whose record she had just broken.

Jean was on the cusp of becoming one of the most famous women in the world. So how did this young and talented pilot go from being dubbed “the Greta Garbo of the skies” to being buried in a pauper’s grave?
Jean Batten: The lonely life of the ?Garbo of the skies' | Life | Life & Style | Daily Express

Her story has a sad ending and in many respects mirrors that of Sheila Scott whose exploits were funded by food mixer entrepreneur Ken Wood.
The last time I inteviewed Sheila for the BBC back in the 1980's she was suffering from cancer and living in a basement flat in Cambridge St,London.
Her flying exploits were forgotten and the press interest had long dried up.

TCT is on a roll as a five minute media hero, who has built in my opinion, a flying reputation that is little more than a charade.

She certainly can tell a tall tale but there is a lot of space between fact and fiction.

If she deserves an award for anything it is self publicity:ok:

I have spent a large portion of my life in broadcasting where there is a saying about those in the public eye.

'When the looks decline the luck expires'.

Jetblu 24th Jul 2016 21:45

In one of TCT's self promoting videos a few posts back, she mentions that she blatantly disregarded the 4500ft join at Victoria Falls in controlled airspace.

I have flown that area in a V35B and it is remarkably busy.

TCT said that she just flew it at 500ft. :ooh:
Shame the authorities never grounded her.

Mike Flynn 24th Jul 2016 22:05

I think she was trying to paint a romantic 1930's style view of what is a modern day tourist fly trap.

The same goes for her description of flying across outback Australia that portrays some old colonial past.

Aborigines pouring avgas from drums on dusty parched airstrips.

No mention of how busy the airspace around Ularu / Ayers Rock is.
So busy that CASA,the Australian aviation regulator, had to publish a 59 page report in 2008:ok:
https://www.casa.gov.au/file/149896/...token=c6QHoq3u

The Jean Batten story is worth reading in context with this thread.

Stanwell 24th Jul 2016 23:21

I'll try again in a less challenging manner..
Has the LAA attempted to defend its position with regard to its Bill Woodhams Trophy award to TCT for her "Feat of Navigation"?

canopener 25th Jul 2016 04:45

This remarkable thread has the potential to become a cable television mini series.I couldn't help do a bit more digging after listening to the Aussie interview a couple of pages back....more untruths. TCT says she joined NZ Warbirds an organization comprised mostly of ex military pilots, well that is not so at all as most members are of the civilian persuasion."I bought a share in a T6",no she didn't her ex husband gave here a share and yes she owned a share in a home built scale SE5A and did a little flying in it until another syndicate member wrote it off. I can't see how this little amount of aviating in such aircraft constitutes "thirty years of flying vintage aircraft".
An honorary degree, more radio interviews, more BS...She claims to have known the Batten family back in NZ and even taught one of Jean Batten's distant relatives to fly....codswallop, TCT's instructing career was brief to say the least.

pulse1 25th Jul 2016 07:55

I happened to see a copy of Flyer yesterday. There was a very small copy of the usual picture of the wreckage but I was interested to note that the caption referred to Ewald as "the other pilot".

Mike Flynn 26th Jul 2016 22:26

I see the mods have unlocked this thread. Can we all keep on topic and respect their generosity in allowing a balanced and reasoned discussion to continue?

In response to airpolice I have never suggested Tracey cannot fly. I suspect Ewald was P1 at Winslow and credit must go to her for taking the blame.

flybymike 26th Jul 2016 22:38

No idea why it has been unlocked. As stated in my previous posts ( all moderated out of existence, as this one probably will be) It should have been kept locked for all the reasons they stated when they (twice) previously closed the thread.
What on earth is there left to say, except to continue the personal spiteful and distasteful attacks which serve no purpose, and simply reflect the pathetic boy's club on here.

Do you condone the blatant dishonesty exhibited by TCT and her groupies? The actions of TCT and her band of supporters is in no way at all beneficial to women in aviation or aviation in general. The charlatan needs to be stripped of all her dubiously obtained awards and this forum is a valuable tool in ensuring that the subject is kept in front of the aviation community.

Stanwell 26th Jul 2016 23:20

flybymike,
There is nothing 'personal', nor is there any 'spite' on here.
As for 'distasteful', well, I would suggest that's a matter for you.
As you may have observed from the number of views this thread has attracted, it is a matter of interest to many within
the aviation community and, amongst the girls (that I know), particularly.
Thank you.
.

kghjfg 26th Jul 2016 23:23

HCAP is a pretty closed club, if its members aren't fussed, I don't see how reminding the rest of the aviation community will help.

Tracey collects her award soon, Prince Andrew will probably present it.
He's not fussed, HCAP members aren't fussed.
Not really anywhere for this thread to go is there ?

Face it, none of the organisations that have given her awards ACTUALLY give a hoot about the image of aviation, nor does she.

Constantly whining on this thread about her and HCAP won't make a difference.

is it time to accept that

HCAP KNOW THE TRUTH. THEY JUST DON'T CARE ABOUT THE TRUTH.

bonez 27th Jul 2016 11:01

HCAP is a pretty closed club, if its members aren't fussed,
I can assure readers that many members are "fussed" including those downunder

This is one of the things so infuriating about this thread. Any complaint about the thread (and there are several valid ones to be made) is immediately taken to be condoning TCT's behaviour.

Really very simplistic: There are other ways of viewing the world.
