Yeah, the internal GPS signal can be a bit squirrely at times. It'll hold the signal for tens of minutes at a time and then it'll disappear. You'll note though that the DTG to APOMA is pretty close. Quite often I'll get a signal that will update the position about every 30 seconds or so and portray the DTG within a couple of mile but it won't be good enough to give ground speed, ETAs, etc.

We've been prohibited from using Bluetooth so the GNS5870 (I think that's the number) has been relegated but the Bad Elf should arrive soon and so I'm hopeful it'll solve the problem. :ok:

Keg, is the Bluetooth prohibition over the Boeing bulletin?

Keg 20th Aug 2012 05:38

Dunno what the basis of it was. The company just came out via FSO and advised no bluetooth on the flight deck. :{

Capt Claret 20th Aug 2012 05:44

Keg, if on approach you switch to Face Time or Skype, and select the rear camera, you could probably land without having to take them down. ;) :8 :}

porch monkey 20th Aug 2012 05:59

Ok, thanks. Thought they might have given you a reason. Probly doesn't affect your "older" a/c, but Boeing and Honeywell (I think) found some possible interference with the gen 3 or series 3 screens produced by honeywell that are fitted to some 737 NG and the 787. Testing on the 787 revealed the issue I think. There is a bulletin somewhere from Boeing. Have read it, but don't have it. Actually, think it was here in Tech Log that I found the link to the bulletin. I'll see if I can find it again.

Or maybe just get the iPad synthetic vision app. I really don't know why Airbus and Boeing spend so much on avionics when all they need is a couple of iPads, Oz runways and a visit to the Ap Shop for the extras.

ver 2.9 just out

DAP's with Georeferencing - now we're cooking with gas:D

baswell 23rd Aug 2012 02:25

Samsung will need to do more than just release it; the'll need to sell lots too! So far, they are well behind: Storming quarter sees Apple reassert tablet dominance ? The Register

And that 30% figure includes the $200 X-mart specials useless for running our software on.

When we started OzRunways, Android tablets were just coming out and we assumed they would do to the iPad what Droid phones had done to iPhone and we would need to respond soon. How wrong we were!

So iOS only for the foreseeable future...

Hi baswell - little issue with BN ILSs not loading....definitely all the DAPS files downloaded but when I open a BN ILS I just get a little blue icon at the top of the screen:confused:

Georeferenced DAPs:ok:

baswell 24th Aug 2012 10:54

Any BN ILS? All three seem fine here. Hmm little blue icon, unless it's a little aircraft, that's not right. Could you send a screenshot to support@... So I can see what you mean?

Chimbu chuckles 24th Aug 2012 11:07

Disregard - did the Aug 23 update and all fixed. Whereas the Daps/ERSA had said 'Done' yesterday today there was a couple of 100 charts to load for DAPS (new?) and an entire ERSA (New?) so maybe that is the answer.

baswell 24th Aug 2012 11:19

Yes, that would be it. There were only about 100 DAPs updated in this cycle, including the BN ILS plates.

Hi

I was flying the other day and had a bit of a problem and it has me a bit stumped. Was running OzRunways and then the ipad went back to the main screen, and then the ozrunways icon said something like 'clearing'. When that finished all my maps were gone?

What did I do wrong? I'm only running the trial version - could that be the issue?

training wheels 30th Sep 2012 01:49

Anyone know where I can buy the big bad elf dongle in Melbourne? Or is it only available for purchase online?

Shagpile 30th Sep 2012 02:50

icon said something like 'clearing'
That's an old version of iOS that used to clear apps when it ran out of space. Apple quickly realised it was a stupid idea & fixed it up. Just make sure you're running the latest iOS and it should be fine. Worst case, delete & reinstall the app to make sure it hasn't deleted something random/important.

piano_player 1st Oct 2012 20:48

How old does the version need to be? I was running 5.1.1 and am now running 6. The fact that the app deleted all its maps in flight was a bit of a concern. I guess that is why we also carry paper maps.

baswell 1st Oct 2012 23:35

Sorry guys, Apple changed its APIs once again (in 5.1) and we missed it.

About to submit 2.9.2 which fixes the issue.

They really should stop fixing things that aren't broken. :ugh:

piano_player 2nd Oct 2012 00:03

So this affects everyone, and not just me. Ouch:eek:

baswell 2nd Oct 2012 06:26

It only happens on iPads with less than a few GB free. Such a rare occurrence that we only just found out about it, even though the risk has been there for a while!

So in the mean time, the mitigation strategy is to take some movies off your iPad...

piano_player 2nd Oct 2012 21:37

Ok, I'll see how that goes. Hope this doesn't happen to someone not carrying their paper charts within reach (and I personally seen too many people do this - drongos) . Let us know when it is fixed.
