The concept of caching for movies wouldn't account for the WiFi concept of personal phones/iPads/laptops planned for by most major airlines. More here in another article, there would have to be a massive data stream to cope with 200 pax online at the same time? :ok:
Qantas plans to eventually allow people to connect to the system using their own WiFi-enabled devices and has flagged the possibility of letting passengers take home unfinished movies. The new system could handle the full demand of passengers on the 254-seat 767 and was working as expected, Lufthansa officials said. "From what we see from the trial, it's all very stable and reliable," said Norbert Muller, head of program management, BoardConnect, Lufthansa Systems. "Obviously, we put a lot of effort into it, from the design perspective, to provide fail-safe measures and different protections to make it (rigorous)." Using WiFi available from access points around the plane means airlines can avoid the cost and weight penalty involved in installing kilometres of cabling. |
I am still highly skeptical, though. 250 passengers over 5 access points all watching video at the same time no problem? I doubt it. As John Eacott points out above, there was talk early on of allowing people to download an app from iTunes so they could BYO device. I guess this hasn't panned out yet due to the issues associated with wifi on but aeroplane mode on as well?!?! It'd be a great option if they could get that up and going! Looking forward to getting the iPad up and going with the Jepp view charts. Hoping the signal on the side wall will be good enough for the GPS to keep using Ozrunways too! |
You can put an iPad into airplane mode and then go in and turn on WiFi separately.
But there's a whole can of worms they probably didn't want to open. Not in the least the issue of caching and copyright. This will be even more of a problem with allowing people to use their laptops rather than an iPad which is already hard to get data off. Plus cabin crew would end up being tech support. Is there anything they do to stop iPads from being disappeared by passengers? I guess an RFID tag and a reader at the aircraft door should do the trick. First comment from the article: This will never replace the experience provided by a system installed in seat. |
A little birds mate did a MEL PER on his 76 last week and 8 i Pads were missing on arrival!!
|
CX and QF's new systems allow you to plug in your own Apple device and watch videos and listen to your own Music on the seat back screen if you like.
Although why you'd want to I don't know, all you need is a charger port to keep the device going. Maybe their headset is a better quality? I guess Business class or First class screens being much bigger might be ok? |
Jetstar have been managing to check in and out their video units for years without them all going missing. The system should be the same for the iPads so am surprised to hear that they could go missing.
|
QF's reside in the seat back pocket. They're locked and unusable outside the aircraft. It someone steals one it's a very big paper weight but useless otherwise.

I just decided to go ahead and buy a Knee Dock for the i Pad but OzRunways have stopped selling them??????
Does anyone know of an alternative Knee Dock on the market? Thanks |
Can any of the Ozrunways guys tell me where the TAF G found on some of the aerodrome forecasts within the app was sourced from? I have scoured airservices etc, but cant find it.
The one with the visual representation of the Taf. Cheers |
It's drawn from scratch from the TAF text. Neil wrote that one
|
Brilliant idea . Thanks.
To any instructors out there, sit with the taf on paper and the tafg, and show them visually what is written there. It seems to stick a bit better with them to read and see it. |

Try not to purchase here, as usual the US RRP of $US29.95 translates to $A79.95 bought at YBAF
And don't forget to lock the screen, otherwise it has a habit of changing aspect/rotating just at the wrong time.... |
Brilliant App. Just come from YPCC-YPXM-YPPD-YBNE and no probs with Iphone 4 reception up front on a 73 Classic. Was told by a colleague that the windows would inhibit the reception....so we proved that theory wrong?
Any chance of getting the Upper level 245-600 VHF and HF Frequencies on it? Or is this just a case (i suspect) of old mans lack of finger dexterity! thanks in advance guys. stunococ! |
