All good fun!

Tapini PNG - as requested by rj...

http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q...headTapini.jpg

http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q...niairstrip.jpg

For those interested: 915m, 4.5% overall (down then up slope), 3 151' elev.

Not one of PNG's most difficult but a good looker none the less.

Captain Nomad 30th Nov 2006 00:01

Got me on a roll now...

A few more from PNG for those interested:

Kora, 600m, 7%, 5 736' elev - don't overshoot 'cos there is nothing to stop you at the end of this strip...
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q...fromtheair.jpg

Karik (Porgera mine), 1 200m, 5.4% (another down and up slope) 7 463' elev
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q...romKarikPo.jpg

Maramuni, 450m, 6.4%, 5 030' elev - usually a nasty tailwind approach with an updraught blast on short-final just to keep you on the ball
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q...amunistrip.jpg

Guwasa, 600m (if you really want the rough erosion at the upper end), 10%, 4 938' elev
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q...rts/Guwasa.jpg

Mengino, 600m, 8%, 4 000' elev - 600m starts looking pretty short with a good quartering tailwind on take off - I always liked looking at trees...
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q...ts/Mengino.jpg

Gema, 560m, 10%, 5 250' elev - turbine Islander on approach
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q...dingatGema.jpg

Better stop - that's enough for now... :}

These pics are awesome! PNG looks like a cool place to fly.

My pics aren't as good as the above ones.... Taken on my flirst flight of ZWG out of Moorabbin. Before her Pre-flight. I think we did medium turns....

Capt,
Do the highest peaks ever get snow on them in PNG? If so, how far down does it get??
Just curious.

Captain Nomad 30th Nov 2006 00:59

185skywagon,

Good question. The highest peak (Mt Wilhelm) is around 14 700' from memory. Plenty of other peaks in the 10-14 000' range. On these highest peaks it is visibly 'alpine' terrain which is essentially terrain with no trees. That is on the occasional exceptionally good mornings when you can actually see the peaks before they get covered in cloud! I don't believe snow is a regular weather feature even at those high altitudes. However I have had one PNG veteran tell me that many years ago he did once sight snow on one of the peaks (I think it was Mt Gilluwe near Mt Hagan?).

tinpis 30th Nov 2006 01:03

Snow on Giluwe often during dry season mostly gone by lunchtime

Carstenz got a permanent glacier and snow cap terrifying place fer lik lik balus :uhoh:

chimbu warrior 30th Nov 2006 02:43

Have seen snow on Giluwe a couple of times, and on Wilhelm once (the day after I got married in Madang).

Mt Juliana (over the border in Irian Jaya) is permanently snow-capped.

Chimbu chuckles 30th Nov 2006 03:16

Saw snow on Mt Wilhelm once when based at Chimbu...spent a fair bit of the bosses avgas dragging the 185 up to 15000' to have a look:ok:

Great piccies Nomad...quite a trip down memory lane for some of us Chimbus who inhabited the place long before digital cameras were invented.:ok:

PNG will always be the best fun I ever had...dressed or undressed.

Thats a nice underside shot of that nanza......they are a very tough looking plane.

Heres a few more from my collection...

This air skiddy parked itself over my house one still summer morning for about half an hour........enroute to waypoint CORRS I think.

This was during my twin endorsement earlier on this year, a pleasant flight from MB-LTV
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...6/P1010824.jpg

This is one of my favourite aeroplanes to fly, a well respected plane that has avoided wear and tear because of that reason.....

While im here I would like to say thanks to EVERYONE that put some photos on, has been quite enjoyable over the last few months.

Cheers JB

Captain Nomad 30th Nov 2006 08:46

Hey Chimbu Chuckles, glad you enjoyed the PNG pics. Great to see some pics of your Bo - looks like a nice machine! I would have to say that in a previous job I had the pleasure of flying around an F33C Bo and it was easily the most beautiful aeroplane I have ever flown. A real pilot's aeroplane. The old V35A in the fleet was a little less perfect - had VERY old questionable avionics and it would get the old tail-swish going in turbulence!

haughtney1 30th Nov 2006 09:45

Troppo....you got the country right:E

Its a place called Taba, very close to the Egypt/Israel border....

Hmmmm.....so all that stuff about modern navigation being based on IRS and GPS is really just BS...........you just look for the big arrow in the sand!

Chimbu chuckles 30th Nov 2006 17:25

CW now you know that they fly Boeings IFR. I Follow Ruts in the sand:E :ok:
