How to suceed in aviation

Have plenty of money, obtain all your qualifications around twenty years of age, have no partner. Be willing to put up with dishonest fellow pilots and employers. Give it a go for at least ten years, if you don,t suceed after this period of time give it away while you are still young enough to enter another proffession. If you need further information email me. No stupid replies please, this is all based on personal experience.

Maybe if I learn't to spell properly I would have had more success.

cheer up mate

Don't despair, its all a question of attitude and perspective. What one person considers 'making it' differs from the next person.

Anyone who has been in GA for a while will have felt the way you do at some point or another, but you should ask yourself what you really want to do. Would you be happy flying a turbo prop? Because the big jets aren't the be all and end all, and newbies getting their licences should know the truth before they get too deep into aviation. Very few pilots make it into the airlines compared to the number that get a CPL.

What else would you do? Desk job? Sure you might take home a few extra dollars, but would you be happy? The choice is yours though.

Ask yourself what your goals are, whether or not you would be happy flying something a bit smaller than a 737, and how much flying means to you.

Good things come to those who wait, things will come good for you in the end.

TP

Started learning aged 26, married, two children, hocked to the hilt. Had some money, borrowed the balance with in-laws then mother providing security. Infact paid off last of the loan last year aged 45.

Moved when required to gain a better position, with the goal of being emplyed by a regional within 5 years. This goal was achieved .... for a short time. Three retrenchments in 3 years, thousands of dollars out of pocket.

Succeeded by not quitting!

My failure is seen in my current jet command!

Q: How do you make a small fortune in aviation?

A: Start with a BL()()DY big one!!

I'm still stuck in GA, i know hardly anyone who's given it away and or failed. It seems that everyone that sticks with it seems to do OK in the end.

Thanks Woomera, I can always improve my english. To everyone else, don't worry about me I'm not going to slash my wrists. I gave it a go and I achieved a lot more than I thought I would. I was just trying to give some practical advice to anyone out there trying to make it in aviation.

thinking pilot

Good Topic
success and failure are strange things to measure. I just wish that the general public could understand that just because you have a CPL and don't fly for QANTAS you are not a failure.

I fell in to the catergory of giving it a try for 10 years then got out and am 30 and in a great career now, don't hate flying just became realistic. Enjoyed flying but on less than 30,000 a year and not alot of opportunites coming up, I am happy where I am now.

I can't tell you how many people don't think you are a real commercial pilot unless you fly for an airline, that ignorance does pi#$ me off.

Ha ha ha ha.....

The travelling public says the same over in Canada! Those of us who chose to bush fly for a career never hear the end of these ridiculous comments:

ooh, I've never been on a small plane before (Otter on floats on a windy day)
so when are you gonna get your commercial license (I have an ATP in Canada/US plus a helicopter license!)
so how long before you can fly a big plane?

Some things never change the world over.

How to succeed in Aviation?

Have a stonking $hitload of cash..

Go and set up your own aviation business....

Then either:

Be really *nice* to everyone, and all that work for you...

OR

Be a complete @rsehole...

Remember, nice guys finish last...

Yep.. there are quite a few sharks and gits out there to work for but I have faith that maybe.. just maybe there is a good employer out there somewhere in the deep dark world called G.A.

Only that I've started already on my alternate career....

Well my story is one that most will scorn. 26 run a successful software development company and chucking it all in because I would prefer to have my office at flight levels than street levels. I would prefer FL300 than Lvl 2.... Do I regret it ? I will tell you in 10 years

Thumbs up Love or money

The things I do for money I hate the things I do/have/want because I love them/it/thing/object I ENJOY.

Gave up flying once because money was tight, got a job with money and life was tight.
Found a girl I loved got married and now am looking for another flying position, why cause this life is short, don't judge it on money, jets and fast cars.

I plan to have fun with the girl I love and fly. The next world, who knows, time warp/aliens or just nothing.

Stick at it mate it will pass, unless you really hate flying and want another job.

Talking

Grow your hair long, shave your legs, take female hormones and get breast implants. Call yourself Nikki and bang every chief pilot on the continent.
