Latest T's & C's and stories in Oz GA

Been many years since I posted on this forum and I'm very out of touch with the Oz GA scene. However, with my bro deciding to take the plunge () I'm trying to reacquaint myself with what he may expect for a typical path forward were he to travel up North for a few years for some hour building. I'm sure its changed a lot since I went through the North Western nurturing!

What are the latest salaries for GA pilots up north and if you are able to throw out a few examples of how you personally have enjoyed things, been screwed over, still live in hope or have thrown the baby out with the bath water, it would be a great start and I'm sure a great laugh.

What is a 'typical' career path for new pilots in Oz for there first few years? 15-17 years ago we all needed 1000 hours 206 time before being allowed to start two engines at once. No less than 4-5000 hours would open the door for an interview with a regional..... have times changed? Forgive my apparent naivety, I left Oz 12 years ago and have not looked back!

Cheers in anticipation of some good stories.... mali

Depends on how much money you are prepared to pay. Head north and hang around pubs pulling drinks and washing aeroplanes until someone offers you a casual job on a 210. Then depending on the state of the game in five years time, you might have logged enough hours to qualify to apply to an Australian airline.

OR: After Australian CPL and CIR graduation, spend upwards of 13 grand (USD) in USA for a 737 or A320 type rating; then another 15-25 grand to Eagle Jet (Miami) to place you in Lion Air Indonesia or similar Asian operator for the 3-500 hour F/O option. No salary of course but hey you can't expect everything...

Then if they like you and offer you an extension to the agreement (plus a pay cheque now) stick with that airline until 2-3000 hours on type and depending on local requirements and your own skills you may be offered a command. That means the possibility of a jet command after roughly five years on type since you left Australia with a bare CPL/CIR.

Compare that road as against joining (if you get manage to get ahead of the mob) an Australian operator as a F/O after five years since graduation if you are lucky - plus another five years at least before your seniority comes up for a jet command slot. So much depends on how much you are prepared to spend..

I imagine under that plan you will have:

1. Some jet time and possibly or possibly not able to be hired by a reputable airline (same old aptitude and sim test stuff) AND
2. Soul completely sold and no morals left to be able to look in the mirror for the rest of your life AND
3. Financially destitute and unable to move on from your forced labour camp.

But I believe that you are correct in saying that Australia is now a dead end for a career.

Yep,

After 5 years you can kiss your guns in front of the mirror sporting 4 stripes, living in a ****hole in the middle of the third world. But hey emirates may give you a look in, however you'll be trading one ****hole for another (albeit with sky scrapers and fancy retail precincts covering up a population engripped with religious repression). There's always Doha or Abu Dhabi if you want the real 'authentic' experience.

Meanwhile your aussie mates have only just got into an airline but hey, Australian capital city, healthcare, democracy, education, food standards, freedom of speech and religion. All the stuff these same countries citizens are risking voyages at sea in leaky boats to experience.

But you know better right? But if **** hits the fan, you can always jump in a leaky boat and try to get home right?

Watch out for that nasty typhoid on Christmas island. I heard its a bitch!
