What is a 'typical' career path for new pilots in Oz for there first few years?
Depends on how much money you are prepared to pay. Head north and hang around pubs pulling drinks and washing aeroplanes until someone offers you a casual job on a 210. Then depending on the state of the game in five years time, you might have logged enough hours to qualify to apply to an Australian airline.

OR: After Australian CPL and CIR graduation, spend upwards of 13 grand (USD) in USA for a 737 or A320 type rating; then another 15-25 grand to Eagle Jet (Miami) to place you in Lion Air Indonesia or similar Asian operator for the 3-500 hour F/O option. No salary of course but hey you can't expect everything...

Then if they like you and offer you an extension to the agreement (plus a pay cheque now) stick with that airline until 2-3000 hours on type and depending on local requirements and your own skills you may be offered a command. That means the possibility of a jet command after roughly five years on type since you left Australia with a bare CPL/CIR.

Compare that road as against joining (if you get manage to get ahead of the mob) an Australian operator as a F/O after five years since graduation if you are lucky - plus another five years at least before your seniority comes up for a jet command slot. So much depends on how much you are prepared to spend..
