Let me Google that for you:

Qantas Foundation and the RFDS | Royal Flying Doctor Service
The Central Operations of the RFDS used the Qantas Foundation’s in-kind donation as part of its fundraising efforts at the “Wings for Life Ball” in Adelaide and the “Wilpena Under the Stars” black tie evening in the Flinders Ranges National Park, raising over $60,000.

Alinta Energy = Leigh Creek Coalfield; Heathgate (not Healthgate) = Beverley Uranium Mine.

.................last year’s event sold out in two days!
Must be only the corporates that can afford this gig. Can't imagine too many pilots throwing $170 for a meal and a glass of Coopers Ale
Maybe that's why no response Adsie.

Off topic, but reminds me of the description used to explain the differences between the various arms of our Defense Force:

The Army sleeps under the stars
The Navy navigates by the stars
The Air Force selects their hotels by their stars

Being a serious fundraiser, I suspect this event is aimed at the corporate world

Ok then, i guess i'll be the first pilot to comment on the event, seeing as i have attended the last few years.

It is an absolutely amazing event, held in a very unique location. If you go, make sure you take the camera as the sunset can be absolutely amazing.

It is a black tie event, however there are always a few who don't wear a tux and seem to get away with it.

Food is good (not fantastic), and the refreshments are plentiful (even if you have to take the empty wine bottle back to the bar to get a replacement full one).

We stay at the Wilpena resort, which is usually booked out very early, there are also camping facilities at the resort. There are buses that run back and forth until LATE (Wilpena resort bus is gold coin donation). THere are buses that run to other places like Hawker, not sure where else.

If flying in, there is a small strip located near the Wilpena resort, but very limited parking available. Rawnsley Park and Hawker are also nearby airstrips. I'm sure you can find a phone number for contacting them yourself.

I'm not sure what the go is with purchasing tickets as i am provided with a ticket each year. In my opinion, it is definately worth the money, and by the sounds of things on this thread, there could very well be a PPRUNE table at the next one.

Hope that answers some of your questions.

Thank you - I was just wondering if this event was worth going out to.

We will be flying over from eastern NSW - just didn't want the event to be a dud

Unless things have changed, this is for their own aircraft exclusively.

Regardless of how good the RFDS thing is, it can still be a great trip. Fantastic country. Interesting places to stop. Fly the extra 30 min to Port Augusta for Mobil swipe fuel (unless YLEC's 2 weeks for fuel is real). Have whiting at the Augusta Hotel. Do the Pitchi Richi railway from Port Augusta or Quorn. You can fly into (and stay at ) Rawnsley Park Station. If you have time pop up to Arkaroola and do the ridgetop tour and stop at Broken Hill or Mungo National Park on the way. You'll have a great time. Its not too far to go up to Lake Eyre either. Stop at Olympic Dam for fuel (ring ahead to co-ordinate a time). Stay at William Creek or potentially Wirraminna Station.

The chief pilot (and some others) were interviewed on the latest episode of the Plane Crazy Down Under podcast.

Did not sound like it was entirely out of the question, but I think for bigger birds they thoroughly discourage it.

Call them and ask... (They will pick you up from the Rawnsley Park strip)

Last I was there (wilpena) I spoke with the CP about using their strip instead of Rawnsley Park.
He listed quite a few valid reason's.

1. Strip Length
2. Normal Density height. (IIRC all his a/c are turbo)
3. Limited Parking for 'visitors'
4. Lack of insurance to cover visiting aircraft.

The 2 he didn't mention, were, Rawnsley park gets a/c traffic and landing fee revenue, and when Wilpena Resort come and get you, they get to charge you a transfer fee............

Rawnsley is a good strip, and the accomodation/meals are pretty reasonable too.

So is anyone from PPRUNE land attending this years Wilpena Under the Stars?
We'll be there to enjoy the night after a big day flying in the guests. Followed by another big day on Sunday flying them all out again.

If anyone's attending let me know, it can be nice to put a face to a username.

All great advice from Old Akro...there is plenty to see and do in the area & quite a lot of hype being generated around this event! Just a couple of things to be aware of: there is no Mobil at Pt Augusta anymore but the bowser that is there operates by normal credit card swipe (or AVFUELSA carnet). Also, if you're planning on going in to Olympic Dam, you will need to fill out a written application form and submit it 3 days prior to the day you intend to land.
