Virgin Blue hiring
From what Im being told they are looking at bonding arrangements. What sucks though is for those of us that already have a 73 endorsement we may be bonded line training costs....hopefully this isn't the case.
If You're referring to VANZ, there is already bonding arrangements built into the VANZ collective employment agreement.
Be type rated on the 737ng or
Company pays type rating, 65% of level 1 pay for 12 months and a 3 year bond to VANZ, from your line check so really 3.5 years.

From the CEA...
The Company may require that those Pilots who are new to the Company pay for their own endorsement. Alternatively, the Company may pay for the endorsement for those Pilots on the basis that they are paid no less than 65% of the relevant Level 1 First Officer’s salary. This training salary will be paid for one (1) year and on the anniversary of their commencement, will increase to the relevant Level 2 First Officer’s salary

Thats sounds similar result to salary sacrificing the endo in 1st year.
So therefore you would start on approx $62k NZD (65% of $95k) then go to $110k NZD after 12months being checked to line... Thats if my sources are accurate.
Thats not too bad, especially with exchange rate now at 1.04

So you really mean $50K ($47K Aus)after tax first year,2015
$101K-$50K=$51K nzd ($47K Aus)for your type rating bonded for 3 years to Vanz
It is not similar to salary sacrifice, there is no such thing in NZ. In australia expenses come before tax in Nz they come after.
Auckland is rather a expensive city, especially with family.

You're correct that we can't salary sacrifice for personal expenses, but a business can pay you a reduced gross salary as a way of recouping a business expense made on your behalf, so.... what WileE said!

I agree with WileE and Rudder....
2015 Level 1 FO salary is 101k NZD x 65% = 65k NZD (61k AUD).
Not entirely sure on tax arrangements, but I estimate the endorsement would end up costing you around 25k post tax. At that cost I wonder why they bond you for 3 years?
From the CEA...
So they salary sacrifice the endorsement AND bond you for 30 months?

In circumstances where the Company pays for a Pilot’s endorsement, the Company may require
that the Pilot:
(a) Be frozen on the aircraft type to which they were endorsed for a minimum of 30 months
from the date of successful completion of the clearance to line (CTL) check; and
50
(b) Repay the endorsement costs of $30,000 (on a reducing pro-rata basis, calculated
monthly) if their employment with the Company comes to an end (other than by way
of Group transfer, redundancy, for medical or compassionate reasons or retirement)
during the 30 month period.

And if you turn up with an endorsement & lots of hours on type, they will still position freeze you for 30 months, from cleared to line.
Sorry guys, Maybe I was a little off in what I was trying to say.
In Australia you can salary sacrifice to reduce your tax burden for work related items. Ie A type rating, I think the VAA EBA from memory says $15k a year over two years? (haven't looked in awhile?)
In NZ it doesn't work like that and thats why the Vanz CEA has it at 65% salary for 12months. So you would get paid the 65% of the year one rate and then pay PAYE tax on the 65%. You would then end up with around $50knzd in the hand.
If you do have the opportunity in joining Vanz or any other operator who has arrangements like these check with a good accountant. If you are currently a contractor you might better paying separately for the rating. Putting it as a expense against your own company and also deducting GST, etc
Then taking full year one salary and no bond.

External hiring for VANZ huh?
Pretty sure there might be a few internals that might be interested. Dunno if the company will offer it or go off the previous bids but I personally talked to a few that are keen. The 30 month bond might be an issue tho.

"...bit of an issue" ???
No problems.
Supply and demand.
Plenty of highly experienced Boeing jet drivers around and type rated, to take the jobs.

It changes every second day, however from the horses mouth a month ago they are wanting to wrap up externals in the new year placing on 777 and the rest on 73 in nz due for courses in Jan/Feb. After the externals are done no more external hiring for domestic and route of entry will be through vara or 777.

From training wheels link...
To be eligible to apply for the position, you will need to have:
• Commercial Pilots Licence
• Valid Australian APTL subjects
• A minimum of 2 Instrument Ratings
• Minimum 1000 hours total flight time
• Minimum 200 hours multi-engine
• Australian Command Multi-Engine Instrument rating
• Australian Class 1 medical
• Ability to work unrestricted right to work in Australia
Does point 3 mean an instrument rating issued in Australia and another country, or do they mean 2 instrument rating renewals?! .
