Blue carpet from what I have heard all the cadetships have been canceled... at least until mid year '09, but this is just hearsay someone with first-hand knowledge can confirm.

2009 cadets

Blue Carpet,
Re the Swinburne 2009 ab initio cadet prog:
Qantas requested from me, a few weeks or so ago, for 2 work references, current employer contact details and flying instructor details.
I don't know if they've been contacted or not.
I haven't heard anything from Qantas.
You?

To all those who answered my questions, thank you. Unfortunately after going to an interview and medical I wasn't selected for the 2009 Cadetship- although in the light of some of the more recent posts it seems that maybe nobody is getting one in 2009 anyhow.

Anybody have any advice on whether I should try again in 2009/2010 for the Cadet Program or whether I should just try my luck doing a CPL privately ?

I have also been told by some people that, at 27, I'm too old to start a career as an airline pilot from scratch. Is this true ? Any advice on this ?

Thumbs up

I got my PPL on my 27th birthday - and I know other guys with airline jobs who started flying after 30. You'll never get to be the most senior pilot in the company, but there's plenty of time to get to international Captain in 35+ years.

Crack on.

LJay, no but my friend went for it. With all this talk that all 2009 Cadetships have been cancelled I was looking for someone who had been accepted to put that rumor to bed.

27 too old ? You got to be kidding right. Ignore them..

If you got to the interview stage you did very very well, I didn't get past stage 2 but I was grateful to have had a crack at it. I'm funding my CPL privately now and almost finished..

If I were you I would definitely re-apply and that would show them that you are really keen on a career as a pilot but don't just wait around for a Cadetship, get a Private Pilot License in the mean time to show that are committed and not just waiting around for a Cadetship. Even if you don't get in to the course it does not really matter, you can always apply direct entry or for the commercial program.

I have also had references requested and supplied dental records but was told I would hear back in the new year with the outcome of the selections. Have not heard that cadetship has been cancelled at this stage?? If anybody knows different then please let me know. Cheers and Merry christmas/happy new year.

So, the date for notification of success has past being the 2nd Jan.

Was anyone lucky enough to get selected for the Swinburne/Griffith course?

I know someone pretty well who got a QF cadetship at 28 1/2. Don't be deterred. Be determined.

The email I received with regard to my application for the commercial program stated that there are a number of changes affecting ALL courses for 2009. It stated that the autumn and winter commercial program had been withdrawn but didn't mention whether or not the ab-initio courses had been withdrawn, but I have a feeling it too has been withdrawn!

I have heard second hand that the Uni based Cadetships have too been canceled... but we all know how reliable the rumour mill is!

Interesting... I was planning to apply for the Spring 2009 commercial program but after clicking on the "Apply for Cadet Pilot Program" link on the Qantas site I am taken to a page that kindly informs me that "There are currently no opportunities available"...

Hi all Q ab initio applicants.
I found out today that I was unsuccessful for the ab initio cadet program. It was via letter dated 18th December, so I guess Aus Post was a bit slow over the break!
I find it a little odd to be rejected because I had been asked for flying references, work references, Auscheck at the start of December and a current employer reference on the 10th December.
Good luck to every one else who's applied! I hope you get through. Maybe next year for me...

Cebo, Keg, McGrath...ladies please!!

The cadet program is just another way of scoring that elusive airline gig. (and no, I'm not a cadet).
The vast majority of guys & gals I fly with are good aviators and good people who get the job done in professional & pleasant way.
Modern interview/screening processes have not eliminated the warthogs from our flightdecks, they come from a variety of backgrounds, we will always have these people. In any case it's not the new generation cadets that give cadets a bad name.
Good luck to all those applying, don't give up.

Damn right! A very attractive way, and even I will admit a 'queue jumping' way. I am very aware that to get to where cadets get in 3-5 years people spend 5-10 years working in GA. It's up to the cadet to fit 5-10years experience in 3-5 years flying; which like anything I would imagine is a case of what you put in is what you get out.

Go in with a sponge for knowledge attitude and you will come out OK, go in with a free ride attitude and you will probably be one of those few that gives all cadets a bad name.
