Garmin 430 Terrain Upgrade
I've just had the terrain upgrade installed on my Garmin 430.
Anyone have any tips with using/getting the most out of this system?
Haven't had a chance to fly an approach with it yet but I'm off to YPMQ next week so I'll give it a run then.

Never used it myself, but there is a bit on it in the Sep-Oct Crash Comic if you haven't read it.

RS....
Quick question - -
I have a recently-installed 430 that came with the Terrain DB card occupying the right-hand slot in the face of the unit.
The start-up screen shows it to be a 2003 vintage.
Does your post mean there is a more recent Terrain DB available and if so, where did you find it? There's no mention of it on the Garmin Website or in the recent Flight Safety article.
Cheers

Have you ever pulled the rt-hand card out? Mine was just a dummy!
If you have the Terrain Upgrade, as the GNS430 goes through its start up proceedure it should make mention of its terrain database version and display a disclaimer.
The TERRAIN page is in the NAV group of pages.
NAV Page 1 = CDI etc
NAV Page 2 = Map etc
NAV Page 3 = Terrain
Garmin avionics dealers can do it for you. Mine cost me about $600 incl installation.

PilotHTR: I may have misread your post.
Can't tell you what Version of the terrain database I have - will have to go turn on the GNS430 and see what it says.
I don't think they update terrain databases too often - cause it doesn't change much cf obstacle databases!
Will get back to you.

Cheers RS,
No - it's not a dummy. I have Terrain warning capability etc. It was just the recency I was querying.
I know the Oz ground doesn't move much, but it's always nice to be up to date.
SoSouth, sounds like a lot to me. I paid about $20,000 for 430 PLUS a bunch of other stuff including GPS steering (GPSS) - highly recommended BTW.

I would have thought that the cost of the GNS430 should be coming down as it is becoming dated (though still great) technology.
Are you getting the 16W Com GNS430A rather than the 10W Com? I understand that adds around $5k to the bill. Might be great to have in more remote areas, but the 10W unit is a huge improvement over the older King gear in the aeroplane.
There are other things I would spend money on before dropping $5k on the extra 6W, eg strike finder/storm scope and all cylinder engine monitor.

My understanding is that this is a 2006 vintage database.
I suspect that you can get an upgrade direct from Garmin (maybe online if you are setup to get your other databse upgrades online), or from local Garmin avionics dealers.
