Terry is retired in Oz, Bronte was, sadly, just caught up in the recent, and likely ongoing, Air Pac cull of expats.

Dr Sir James "Jabba" Jacobi. Up-date.

Hi everyone,
Just received an up-date on Sir Jim that you may be interested in. If you wish to send a message for old times, Robbo will pass it on for you.
Regards, Peter Sharpe.

Morning olgeta, time to bring you up to date on Jim's condition. Visibly nothing has changed. He is skin bone nothing and very frail. But contrary to my last message where I said I was of the opinion there may not be much fight left in him, he has commenced weekly chemotherapy. At this stage in not much more than test dosages but increasing slowly. This is a change in attitude I didn't see coming. The treatment will not remedy the core problem, but if it will give some relief to the fusion in his mouth, it will free up his tongue a bit so that he may be able to eat more than he currently does and his speech may improve. That is his immediate frustration, not being able to communicate effectively. Jim's Doctor has told Nora that he is most concerned about the amount of saliva going into his Jim's lungs which may lead to Pneumonia. That is the not good news.

Jim started this treatment last Monday week and when I asked him if he thought it would provide a positive outcome he said "I bloody hope so". So there is still fight in Sir James. There is no doubt his mind is sharper than outward appearances suggest. It is his turn to bet for our betting syndicate, and he has had three winning weeks. Last Saturday he had 2 bets for two wins including the Stradbroke winner. He hasn't been going to the races in recent weeks, that is a long drive for him, but he certainly has retained his interest as his results would indicate.

Please pass this message on as you did with my first message. The results of that were amazing. Responses came from around the world. I print these emails and deliver them to Jim at the Bowls Club on Wednesdays. He is very appreciative of your support and I am more than happy to be the messenger for you.

I shall keep you informed

regards

Robbo.

Terry is retired in Oz
Any idea exactly where abouts Chuck? PM if necessary.

yelosub; The search function is easiest option. Other than that, do like the rest of us did; A combination of phone calls, letters and personally calling on an operator in the country.
The latter is the best.

Brian Smith

Olsem Wanem,

Thanks for the information.

I did a search on Google and found the links below, including the crash report.

Brian was a friend from long tim bepo.

I knew him when he flew Islanders for BougAir on Bougainville. I flew with him many times and counted myself a friend of him and his wife Rosalie.

We sometimes lose track of our friends and sometimes when we go looking for them we sadly, don’t find them.

My wife and I are sad that we have discovered that it is now nearly 8 years that since he left us. We last saw Brian and Rosalie sometime in January 1985 - some 24 years ago.

Lukim yu behin tim Brian.

Sir James "Jabba" Update

Apinun olgeta, I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but I did tell everyone I would keep you informed. Dr Jim's days are now numbered, sadly in the singular. He has not been eating normally for some time and now has stopped drinking which will mean some parts of his body will stop functioning. By choice he is staying at home where he is comfortable. In hospital they could delay the inevitable by putting him on the drip or whatever they do there, but Jim wants to let happen what will happen with no false extension. He was too ill to go anywhere yesterday, let alone the Bowls Club for a beer,so Sudsie and I went to his home this afternoon armed with a six pack, but for what I will bet would be a first for our good doctor, he declined the offer of an ale.

I have been down this path with our good mate Mike Raes who passed away in 1995. Jim now has that same vacant look, very gaunt - he weighs less than 40kg. He has forgotten most things but he still keeps the car keys and wallet in his pocket as though he is going somewhere. There is still something ticking over. He is going back to the chemo place on Monday, but by his own admission, that is not working. Nora says it is only for assessment and I would expect this treatment will discontinue. Nora is coping as well as you could expect, but it is a very sad situation for her and I am not sure that she has enough of a support mechanism of her own in place to help her through this period. Jim and Nora have lived a fairly isolated existence in recent years.

Jim has acknowledged the support he has received from his many friends, and whilst he cannot thank you himself he knows that I will. My next message I fear, will be the one I don't want to send but we cannot change life's course. The Good Doctor is not stressed with pain and seems comfortable with his lot. We can only hope Jim finds a better place to be, as soon as God's will prevails.

Regards to all, robbo

VALE Sir James 'Jabba' Jacobi.

Sadly but inevitably Dr Jim lost the battle with his cancer demons at 11pm last night. He collapsed at home mid afternoon and was taken to hospital. He was stabilized and was able to return home as was his wish. He died peacefully and was not stressed. I would suggest we give Nora a bit of time to get over this. For those of us who will be able to pay Jim our last respects I shall keep you informed as to the details.

May the good man rest in peace

Thanks Sharpie:

Very sad as Dr JJ was our family doctor for many years and saw me through some of my most stupid experimental days as a kid which included breaking my elbow following a backyard fight with my brother, as well as a number of other tropical illnesses that seemed to be around at the time.

Rest easy, Jimbo, and thanks for often fixing me up.

Must be well over 40 years since I first sought Jim's professional advice, when he was in partnership with Kerry Larkin behind the Police Station.

You served PNG long and well. I'm sure you know we're going to tell stories about you now you've gone, but somehow I think you would approve.

Farewell Jim.

Jabba.

Yes Torres, Many no doubt and I sadly will not be at the wake. I believe that tomorrow's Australian may well run an article as will PNG Post Courier.

Farewll Jim and thanks for the near 60 medicals over all those years, fine Rugby League as well as 'fund-raising' nights. An end of a real era.

Thank You, Sir Jim

Article from: The Australian
THE only man knighted for services to rugby league, James Jacobi, has died in Brisbane aged 83.

The convivial Sir James -- known ubiquitously as "Jabber" Jim -- worked in Papua New Guinea as a general practitioner for about 40 years, during which time he became the first president of the PNG Rugby League, a position he held for more than 25 years.

He oversaw PNG becoming a member of the International Rugby League Federation, where he represented the country. Consequently, PNG began playing regularly against the Australian, New Zealand, English and French teams.

Sir James's strong personal links with leading Australian administrators helped secure regular tours by the Kangaroos, who enjoy god-like status in PNG.

His surgery developed into the largest practice in Port Moresby, which treated rugby league players for free, together with missionaries and many others who would have struggled to pay the fees.

Sir James grew up in Maryborough, graduated from the University of Queensland, and served in the Royal Australian Air Force in PNG in the final stages of World War II.

Jeff Wall, a Brisbane-based consultant recently awarded a CBE by PNG for services to the country's relationship with Australia, said: "Jim's enormous range of business, political and community contacts were regularly tapped to help develop the greatest game of all in the only country where its place as the national code is unchallenged.

"He was a person of unbounded generosity, and his passion for rugby league -- and the time he put into it despite seeing up to 60 patients a day in his medical practice -- was inspirational." For more than two decades, Sir James led "pilgrimages" of league fans from PNG to grand finals in Sydney.

About 14 years ago, he shifted to Brisbane, where he continued to practise, at a clinic in Chermside, as well as returning frequently to act as a medical locum in PNG.

Among a plethora of colourful anecdotes often circulated about Sir James in Port Moresby, is the occasion when Lionel Murphy, then an opposition Senator, visited the country, with staffer George Negus, to assess progress towards independence.

They were convinced that they were being followed by ASIO operatives, and expressed their consequent annoyance to a group of Rotarians at the bar in the Gateway Hotel.

The locals informed the visitors that it was widely known that Sir James,, also a Rotarian, was the local ASIO "station chief". Eventually, pumped up, the two headed round to his house in the middle of the night to accuse him.

This proved a classic exercise in non-communication, since Sir James had not even heard of the organisation -- though this appeared in the circumstances to reinforce the brilliance of his cover.

He was only, in truth, an agent of rugby league -- for which he received his knighthood in 1991.

Bamahuta Doctor Jabber Jim

PNG has lost a true son. Thanks Jabber for your love and dedication to PNG, it's people and the way of life - which you truly enhanced through your work in the Rugby League and your medical practice.

From me personally, Thanks for all the pilot medicals over the years that were totally stress free.

Bamahuta and Rest In Peace!!

Sir James Jacobi

morning olgeta Jim's Funeral arrangements are

Monday 29th June 2pm at the St Peter Chanel Catholic Church at 41 Chaprowe Rd The Gap. And afterwards, for those want to indulge in a few beers, at the Stafford Bowls Club. I know that is a bit of a drive (15mins) but it was Jim's last watering hole and is chosen for ease of organization.
