Maybe they'll get a few serious candidates but most likely just curiosity seekers ?

Being over there flying 90+ hours a month must complicate the ability to respond to all the hoops one must jump through to get interviewed/hired back home.

Every airline is hiring at home. The legacies and cargo guys are all hiring big time. LCCs with great contracts and Regionals with sign on bonuses/flow thru deals. It makes no sense to go there at this point unless one is significantly older and wants to fly a WB before retirement. The large training bond and the inability to interview back in the states make it a very undesirable option for any American pilot at this point. Different story of course for folks from other countries with completely different situations. I have many American friends who used to work there who have managed to escape. Here’s some advice, do yourself a favor and stay away from this place.

Just read all the posts in the Middle East Forum, even if you only believe 75% of it, the fact is that many pilots are walking out of the doors, some with no job to go to.
Buyer beware, there is no refund policy.

Correct. Instead, there is a very big 'buy out' policy. (now USD 48K I believe.)

They can't attract pilots because the conditions are so bad (forget what STC has said, they are >800 pilots short), other carriers are offering signing bonuses, but EK places a 48K bond on YOU to go work for them. That's the mindset right there - no idea, and believe that you the employee owe them everything for giving you a job. You would have to be insane to leave the US to go there now.

They even bond FO’s for 2 years when they do their upgrade to Captain now. Says it all really.

  • I have been told by 2 major airlines (one stating that I am essentially not good enough for them and to never come back DESPITE being offered the job on day 1)
  • Also been rejected IMMEDIATELY after applying to one major cargo airline (despite having 5 relatives that work for said company)
  • I have done 5 years of job fairs (OBAP, NGPA, WIA) and begged for a job from people who I have no connection with.
  • I also got the empty encouragement of "Wait, you haven't gotten a call? Don't worry, you'll get a call soon."
Based on this, and other factors as well, I, as a US pilot, choose to take my talents elsewhere. CLEARLY I am not meant for any US major airline, even when they are so called "desperately" hiring pilots. So, why stay and beg?
No job is perfect. Proof is in me sitting in a US major jumpseat with a captain making 400k/year without trying and STILL bitching.
Right now, I have one interview with one of the ME-3, and another potentially coming up soon. I did my research, so I'm going with my eyes open.

Let the judgement begin ...

JAAirbusPilot,

No judgement at all. While it's no consolation, your lament is extremely common here...as you know. The frustration is understandable.

There's just no way to comprehend the thought processes and priorities of the HR-driven process at work with the legacy...and LCC/ULCC carriers. But those seats WILL be filled. With whom is the question.

Best luck to you.

And then are us "strange ones". After 8 years with EK as a 777 Captain..I was so fed up with them, I went home and got a job driving trains. And I love it!!!

No judgment here, when I was stuck at the regionals with no end or upgrade in sight, I would have gone to EK in a heartbeat. I had an app with them, updated it regularly but never got past the "short list" even though I was, at least on paper, a very good candidate for them, based on what they were saying at the time. I certainly wasn't any kind of a longevity risk, there would have been nowhere to go. This was back when the gummers got their five-year gift from the FAA, so nobody was hiring.

My point is don't worry about what other think, do what works for you.

JAAirbus Pilot,

Do you understand what Nepotism is? You believe that because you have 5 relatives working at a company that means you should get the job ahead of someone who is better qualified?! I praise that Cargo company because they obviously choose on merit, not on who you know.

From what you have written here is the fact you can't come to terms with - you are not competitive. It's a s simple as that. Harsh? No, its is just factual. But guess what, that's life.

Right now, you are going to 'take your talents' to the Middle East because you have a 'F$#% you, I'll show you' mindset to the American carriers who won't recruit you. You'll get the job in the Middle East. But in the years to come it will end in tears when you realise you are living in a complete sh1thole, completely and totally shattered from the slave-like conditions, and longing for your first world country life. Your comments reek of 'the entitled one.' You think because you have an ATPL you are owed an airline job. Sorry to be the one to break it to you but you're not. And the fact that you have had multiple companies reject you means that you have a weakness or weaknesses that they are all finding and rejecting you on.

So here's some advice and make of it what you want. Look in the mirror and accept that you're not perfect. Contact the companies that rejected you and see if there is somebody sympathetic to your cause who will tell you what the flaw was that they all saw. Then work on fixing it, and applying again when you have.

I did over 7 years in the Middle East, and saw your type frequently. Their sh1t buckets filled astronomically quicker than the rest of ours who went for the right reasons.

Harsh words perhaps but 'Oh so very true' about life in the sandpit. JAAirbus Pilot please take note....

When I lived and worked there a while back (not in an airline but a related industry), it took me all of 9 months to realise what a crock of sh!t it all was, how I was getting sucked into 'Living the Dubai Dream' but how it was actually destroying me. I left and have no regrets about doing so. I'm glad that I went so I know what goes on out there but Bloody Hell, how glad was I to get back to a civilised society where people are treated and respected as people. And don't even get me started about the treatment out there of the labourers. Illiterate workers who were basically treated as slave labour yet expected to know and understand about Western 'norms', yet expected to 'suck it up when they or their mates got killed because of the complete absence of health and safety and their own inexperience with what they were being asked told to do.

It’s not easy to get on with a legacy or legacy cargo. Or even a LCC. Obviously you know how hard it is to get even just a phone call from Spirit or Frontier. A lot of us got rejected too or waited years and years with no call but never gave up. So you get rejected once you’re going to give up and sell your soul to this place who is basically hiring anyone with a pulse at this point? Are you going to be truly happy with that? Once you get to EK it is going to be really hard to try and make it back to the legacy US job you clearly want as your first choice.

Have you tried Asia/China? Better pay and somewhat better conditions.

I know one of the recruiters fairly well. apparently they’re getting quite a lot of positions filled ex-turkey.

The words DESPITE and IMMEDIATELY that you used makes me think there is something you don’t want to say

hired/offered a job and took it a way?
rejected immediately?

do you have something huge on your records and not disclosing it the first time with the Legacy ?
and after you disclosed it the second time with the cargo company got the NO on the spot?

i don’t know but don’t be discouraged and stay home as they all suggest
smells of PRIA checks catching up.

I don't know that I entirely agree with your assessment that our friend is displaying a "bleep you" attitude or much of a sense of entitlement. It seems to me more that after some years of lack of success here (for whatever reason), he's willing to look at other options. I don't think that's particularly unhealthy. After all, none of us are getting any younger, and I wouldn't expect him to spend an additional unknown number of years doing the same thing he's been doing just out of some warped sense of duty.
