There's been no comment about the possibility of a Finnish speaking moderator on this thread from the "Governing council" other than the "Sorry guys - no Finn speaking mod = no Finnish".

As entertaining as this thread is, it serves no real purpose. We are now discussing about what languages are used in the Scandinavian based forums or how a few Welsh speakers can ruin one's life by taking over the internet

A few pointers though. The 2 Finnish aviation websites that I know of are EXCLUSIVELY in Finnish and Swedish. Unfortunately the content and information obtained from these sites cannot mach PPRuNe.
Welsh postings should not be a problem on a site, unless there where no moderators with appropriate language skills available to clean up the act.

Wink Come on guys...

...I'm just wondering what is the big issue here? Please, understand that someone's *ss is on the line with every post published here on pprune, so that someone has to be able to interpretate every single post published here. Simply can't believe it has something to do with us Finns or Scandinavians, except language!

Let's be proud that we CAN express ourself with more than one language, it's not so common in many parts of this world, and use this forum as one (good) way to keep up with our English skills.

It's almost impossible to find a Finn sober enough for the job.

PPRuNe Towers

Your "Clincher" so as to speak was adressed at the first post at the top of page 2. I made my observations there about why sometimes English is used alot.

But i think it is important to note that just because we use english alot, doesn't mean that we can't use our other languages too, it is that sometimes we chose not to, i believe the choice is ours. Up to the point where we seem to have a problem finding a fluent speaking moderator, so rules is rules. BUT instead of all this procrastinaiting, should we not do something about it, and since you seem to be God here, can you not try to help us, instead of trying to summise your knowledge of Scandinavian Anthropology (Which you could write on the back of a stamp)

As for your observation:

You might also consider the somewhat, err testy and argumentative relationship many of you have had over the years on PPRuNe regarding Finnish versus the other Scandic languages. I would of course be miles off track with an observation that while it's alright to take a poke at each others' language you will stand shoulder to shoulder if an outsider raises the subject.
Consider it like familly politics. Most sensible people don't get involved what happens between siblings and parents, but someone sticks their nose in from the outside i guess they get the full belt.

So we should be able to converse in any language that is supported by the moderators as well as English. Since that facility has been made available to us, we should be able to use it. But the point is here allowing the Finns to use their language.. Now if i remember correctly, i have seem Flaps Forty respond on Finnish threads in Finnish. So i guess she can speak Finnish, so where is the problem?

Arrow Flaps

Jag kan Hjalpa Flaps. Finska ar min modersmol och jag kan prata bra "Scandi" akso. Men av de finlandare som skriver hit i PPRuNe monga forstor Svensk men kan inte skriva pa svensk. For Finlandaren engelska ar inget problem. For mig att prata finska och svara en finska fraga pa finska ar an sak jag skulle kampa over.

Forgive me for the lack of Nordic keyboard and grammar

The entry caption to the forum tells the story.

There are alternatives for you out there as we aren't supporting minor languages or non Roman alphabets. This is the situation across the entire site because any other policy means recruiting more moderators. We have 57 at the moment and that causes enough communications problems as it is between timezones, rostering, access to connections and legal issues. With the planned increase in private forums coming on line soon that number will unavoidably increase adding to our load here in the Towers.

There are no staff, there is no office and Danny and I have run the site since its inception while holding down full time flying jobs. We have to restrict our load to something approaching manageable.

To those pissed of with this decision our apologies but it is the way it is going to be - as I said you have a raft of alternatives available. If you take violent exception to this decision I suggest you look carefully at yourselves. PPRuNE has never advertised or issued a press release. Think about that. We didn't come looking for you. We have never made any offer, promise or undertaking to any of you other than protecting your identities.

You came to us and are in our 'home.' You agreed to our terms and conditions when signing up. The site isn't a democracy. As Flaps knows only too well, Danny describes it as a benign dictatorship and it has been for 8 years. While this is self centred, probably morally wrong and we will ultimately be consigned to hades the point is it works, it has worked for 8 years.

Anyone familiar with the overall site and reading it for a number of years will have seen me stepping into a forum several times during such periods as this. I serve the role of lightning conductor and punchbag. I take the flak and insulate the moderator(s) from long term ill feeling and resentment - Danny tends to be a little more direct having shut down the Australian forums 4 times till they get the message. It works and the Oz PPRuNers were desperate to get it back. There are always many ways of skinning a cat - it is entirely likely that there is someone out there that can do it better than us and PPRuNE will fade away.

I've enjoyed the jousting and hope you continue to find the site both useful and entertaining.

Regards to you all,
Rob

It is important not to lose sight of the real enemy.

Well, at least this shows that we Finns do like the PPRUNE. A big mistake would be to go for some Finnish only forum. Just a waste of time...
PPRUNE keeps even the older pilot (like me) at least somewhat updated what is going on in aviation in Nordic as well as other areas. However, some little local news could be more "colorful" if Finnish language could be used. Hopefully, PPRUNE will find a easy way to moderate even our minority language occasionally. Maybe JJ could give a hand for Flaps on this.
Many thanks for Rob and Danny for the wonderful forum!

I look at this Nordic Forum as a forum in which we can discuss matters relating mostly to Nordic issues and NOT a forum where we can communicate in our respective languages. It makes sense that these threads are separated from other forums since most likely they do not interest non-nordic pilots. Should anyone have an interest in what goes on up here he/she knows where to go!

The folks that spend their money, free time and put their names on the dotted line make up the rules. I we want to play on their playground we better play by those rules. The way these rules has been presented to us (or showed down our throat) in this thread though is unnecessary and overgeneralized. Lets bring the vile level of the discussion down a notch....

A Dane and a Swede is talking. The Swede says "I was once stuck in an elevator for 3 hours". "That's nothing" replied the Dane "I've seen a Noggie stuck on an escalator for 3 days".

Rob,

You're prolly right - much as we like to take the p1ss out of each other, we'll stick together like glue if an outsider tries to barge in and be a smart arse. However, being Welsh there is indeed a good chance you'll have a pint or two of Viking blood running through your clogged up veins, and because of that we'll let you off the hook on this occasion. It could also be, but this is stretching it, that it's your site and every Scandihoovian is blatantly aware that you do not p1ss off the owner of the bar. Alcohol shortage have dire consequences - just look what happend to GWB when he quit the booze!

Og nu skal vi sateme ha' nogle bajere!

Hehe, you should think before you post.

So you mean to tell us that the dane stood watching for 3 consecetive days?

I must admit that I had a laugh trying to find out the different alternatives why the dane didn`t enter the escalator to save the poor sod.

And what was wrong with the "emergency STOP switch" ?

Hmmmm. May be the sign was written in Finnish?

Exactly, Kopeloi, you good old doctor. I could not have imagined what a can of worms I opened with my simple an ignorant question. But I can see the point of not being able to post in Finnish due to the lack of a Finnish speaking moderator. Actually, being a bit naive, I did not think that the people who run a forum like this can be held responsible for opinions, statements etc expressed by individual contributors, but that obviously is the case. Hope this is not another can of worms...
Anyway, I'll be happy to practice my English from now on, thank you everybody for making the situation clear for me.
