Dissent in India?

Russian diplomat, Indian politician spar over oligarch’s death | Russia-Ukraine war News | Al Jazeera

On Thursday, Manish Tewari, a former Indian minister belonging to the opposition Indian National Congress party questioned why the bodies of the two men had been cremated when they were Christians. “Hercule Poirot says burnt bodies tell no tales,” he wrote on Twitter, referring to Agatha Christie’s famous fictional Belgian detective.

Russian ambassador to India Denis Alipov was quick to respond, also on the social media platform. The diplomat thanked Indian officials for the probe into the deaths, but then hit out at Tiwari. “Meanwhile it would be useful for some Hercule Poirot lovers to learn that cremation in Russia is as customary as burial,” he wrote. “Idleness is the root of all evil.”

Accepting it’s the main sis at the moment - but that averages out as the Russians suffering around 20K KIA and 50K WIA every month just around Bakhmut alone….

BAKHMUT AXIS /1245 UTC 30 DEC/ RU units have crossed the rail right-of-way W. of Myika Pond & again at Andriivka and Kurdiumivka. These gains have proven costly: in the last 24 hours, RU has sustained 690 troops killed in action and at least 1800 wounded on all axes of contact.

790 KIA reported the previous day with approximately 2000 WIA.

(Not disputing the numbers) 100k dead means at least 250k wounded.
Where are all those wounded? Are they treated within military hospitals and sort of kept away from the public or are they returned to their home towns and families? They must have been noticed all over the country by now and have effects on public war support?

There are far fewer wounded than normal as the Russians have been abandoning their Cargo 300s in the field or even shooting them if untreatable. Thus the higher KIA figures - there are plenty of videos around showing wounded comrades dumped instead of treated

Exiled chief rabbi says Jews should leave Russia while they can

Exclusive: Pinchas Goldschmidt warns Jewish population will be made scapegoat for hardship caused by war

Moscow’s exiled chief rabbi says Jews should leave Russia while they still can, before they are made scapegoats for the hardship caused by the war in Ukraine.

“When we look back over Russian history, whenever the political system was in danger you saw the government trying to redirect the anger and discontent of the masses towards the Jewish community,” Pinchas Goldschmidt told the Guardian. “We saw this in tsarist times and at the end of the Stalinist regime.”

“We’re seeing rising antisemitism while Russia is going back to a new kind of Soviet Union, and step by step the iron curtain is coming down again. This is why I believe the best option for Russian Jews is to leave,” he added.

Goldschmidt resigned from his post and left Russia in July after refusing to back the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“Pressure was put on community leaders to support the war and I refused to do so. I resigned because to continue as chief rabbi of Moscow would be a problem for the community because of the repressive measures taken against dissidents,” he said……

Today only about 165,000 Jews remain in the Russian Federation out of a total population of 145 million. Goldschmidt said he believed that since the war began, 25% to 30% of those who remained had left or were planning to do so, although there were now few flights out of Moscow and the price of a flight to Tel Aviv had quadrupled to about $2,000 (£1,625).

In July, the Russia’s government shut down the Russian branch of the Jewish Agency, a non-profit organisation that promotes immigration to Israel…..

Poor bloody Jews.
When will this nightmare end for them?

Pali 30th Dec 2022 19:53

I've just found a speculation (allegedly from Russian war bloggers) that Ukrainian Tu-141 drones use transponders and while mixing into Russian traffic they squawk 7600 or mimic some other flight nearby thus wreaking havoc into traffic control. I am not sure how plausible this is but if true this would explain why was the space around Saratov closed for a while and it wouldn't be the first time when Ukrainians used some unorthodox measures to cause wanted effect. Stuff for another future Hollywood film.

With all due respect, the nightmare at present is for the Ukrainians!

From the looks of things, the Russians do not seem to be bothered by their losses, as long as the juggernaut moves forwards. They can keep changing their failing commanders.

The only thing that can stop an irrestible force is an immovable mass. Another juggernaut of equal size would cause the thing to shudder to a stop. Ukraine's situation today?

It's interesting how the impact of drones wasn't anticipated by both powers (yeah, not a drone in the video above, but still). They have really changed the battlefield in unexpected ways.

Certainly was by Ukraine, heavy use for the past 9 years of the war.

I can foresee the likes of Gepards coming back into vogue in the west and modern equivalents being introduced across the board to defend cities and also armoured columns, maybe something along the lines of the phalanx, though the Gepard appears to effective enough with a minimum of ordnance use.

Missiles are great but are not really cost effective against cheap drones nor easy to replenish in the short term,
