Courtney, I don't think PPRuNe is a place for people to be shy.

Go on, tell us what you really think!

I see we are pushing the boat out to bolster the defences

Defence chiefs prepare new plans to defend Falkland Islands - Telegraph

It is understood that additional troops, another warship and extra RAF Typhoon combat aircraft could be dispatched to the region ahead of the March referendum on the Falkland Islands’ future.

LOL one plane, one boat and two troops?

Biggus 14th Jan 2013 18:37

NL,

"...and extra...", not "...an extra...".

"An extra" would mean one more, whereas "and extra" could mean any number from 1 upwards, it could mean 50 more!!

Although I grant you we would probably be looking at a (very?) low even number!

If Sharkey is the "closest thing to a fighter ace......." what was David Morgan wasting his time at?

MAINJAFAD 14th Jan 2013 19:18

what was David Morgan wasting his time at?
Humm, actually doing some research about items he didn't actually see for himself when he wrote his book instead of using incorrect hearsay that he most likely heard in a bar (Second Vulcan raid dropping its bombs un-fused for example):O:O:O

SASless 14th Jan 2013 20:27

PN.....He did not win because of me....but in spite of me.....twice now!

As to keeping what military and naval capability you can....would be sage advice especially coming from that Douche Bag.

He may have his own hands full before too long if he keeps up his pace....and might be a bit too distracted to think much about getting stuck in another sticky issue. He has stated he is going to "Lead from Behind" and move to a "Light Foot Print" style of military presence.

With the up coming Sequestration cuts to the DOD....that will be a foregone conclusion as our Military shall suffer crippling cuts. If ya'll have the Dosh....you might be able to buy all sorts of neat kit for scrap prices when we start our downsizing that is bound to happen.

Matter of fact....we have one 50 year old CVN that you might save from the Razor Blade makers if you hurry. She's old and worn....but then all you have to do is steam her around the FI with some recently de-mothballed F-14's and A-6's and Bob's yer Uncle. If Obama was smart....he get you and the Argies into a bidding war for the Enterprise. Oh wait....he is not into that kind of thing....smacks of capitalism which he is firmly against.

Rob Courtney 14th Jan 2013 21:07

If Obama was smart....he get you and the Argies into a bidding war for the Enterprise.
What are the Argies going to bid with? tins of Corned Beef:E

SASless 14th Jan 2013 21:18

What would the UK MOD bid with.....heck even if you won the bid....how would you Man the thing.....it takes a swoop of folks just to Man the Rail when entering Port!

Archimedes 14th Jan 2013 21:29

We'd grit our teeth and offer to take Piers Morgan back (perhaps arranging for him to be stuffed and mounted on a plinth in the Top Gear studio). How's that for a start? Given the value of getting him out of your nation, I'd contend that we'd need to find about $50 to complete the deal, and even we might be able to find that.

Since the deal would take a few months to sign, we'll make manning the rail a condition of entry for any new arrivals from Bulgaria and Romania, who will get the right to come here at about the time the contract is signed (although that requires the Daily Mail's prediction that the entire population of both nations will head for the exits to destroy the UK as we know it, etc, etc, further xenophobic headlines available at no extra charge, etc, etc, to come true).

For the record, I am entirely willing to provide similar procurement advice to the MoD (hourly charge £1,000)...:suspect:

glojo 14th Jan 2013 21:40

:)Sadly she is well past her sell by date but apart from not being able to man\woman that ship, would we have enough aircraft to take advantage of such a mean machine...

We did exercises with that goliath way back in the early 1960's and here she is finally decommissioning, it has certainly been around the block once or twice.

Would it fit into our dockyards and is there a dry dock big enough to cater for this size aircraft carrier?

Jollygreengiant64 14th Jan 2013 21:47

Archimedes,

Why even bother with the carrier? Impress Piers Morgan into the Navy, deploy him to the islands and let his arrogance, pompousness and ego repel anything that tries to get near...

SASless 14th Jan 2013 22:11

Jolly is on to something here.....now that makes sense all the way around....US, UK, but have not the Falklandians been done badly enough without inflicting that upon them as well?

No you have to fly with Lufthansa, KLM, Alitalia, Turkish.. it probably does not mean all those countries are all Iran supporters.

My question was why do you support Argentina's claim to the Falklands despite the islanders expressing their wish to stay British but then claim that Venezuela would have no claim to Aruba despite them being much closer to the mainland
Rob
Oops, I think we fell for the good old "either with us or against us" thinking that send us all into Iraq. They weren't with us.. Libya was with us, but that's a different story.

Venezuela has little ambitions towards the Antilles, but we would be happy to discuss with them in the UN!

I'm just pointing out the holy right on self determination for the Falklanders are totally clear and fully supported. In the UK.

Big friends around the world feel differently, like what the h.ll are you doing holding sheep and Typhoons on the other side of the Ocean.. And what's the deal about this Queen Elizabeth Land? Grabbing?

So maybe take aim at the US, Brazil and Chile first.

An unwelcome political reality. Better ignore and talk about Typhoons and Harriers?

Rob Courtney 14th Jan 2013 23:04

Sorry Keesje but that answer is double dutch to me!

500N 14th Jan 2013 23:10

"Venezuela has little ambitions towards the Antilles, but we would be happy to discuss with them in the UN!

I like that, you bring in the UN, yet you support Argentina yet instead
of talking in the UN, they invaded the Falklands !!!

I'm just pointing out the holy right on self determination for the Falklanders are totally clear and fully supported. In the UK. "

I thought the UN supoorted the right to self determination ?

So doesn't that mean they have more support than just the UK ?

And the Argies don't support the vote on self determination because
they know it will go against them.

And leave the UN out of it, the biggest WOFTAM ever devised
as well as being dictatorial to get the world the way they want it.
The UN buildings in the US should be torn down and everyone
sent home. Save a packet of money.

glojo 15th Jan 2013 08:56

keesje,
I think it really sad when folks use history to justify their arguements especially as these sad individuals are very selective in how far back they go to justify their cause.

How far back are you looking to determine the ownership of those islands?

Do you believe in democracy and letting the living decide their rights to live? Or are we going back to a single specific date you have selected to try to justify a dispute that clearly goes against the will of the great majority of the living.

How about we let the living simply vote on what they feel is best for them? Let them vote in a form of leadership, let the leadership decide national policy.

You give the appearance of wanting a much larger nation simply walk into any smaller country and take it over? Not something that has ever been popular and civilised countries tend to object.

My vote is to let those on the Falklands decide their own destiny, if it is as an independant state then so be it. If it is to become a part of Argentina, then so be it. It should be up to the living to cast their vote and that vote should be respected by ALL nations.

keesje 15th Jan 2013 09:47

glojo, impression is many people love certain parts of history. They cherry pick historical events that fit their case, smartly ignore the ones contradicting it.

"You give the appearance of wanting a much larger nation simply walk into any smaller country and take it over? Not something that has ever been popular and civilised countries tend to object."

Amazing what patriotism does with common sense.

RUCAWO 15th Jan 2013 09:50

No that was a smaller country walking into bigger ones:ok:

glojo 15th Jan 2013 10:24

Keesje,
Like I said we tend to cherry pick times or dates.

Bottom line is do you believe in the right of the living to vote for their own destiny.

keesje 15th Jan 2013 12:32

do you believe in the right of the living to vote for their own destiny.
Maybe we cherry pick "Rights" too.. Which rights, which not? When and for which people? And for who not? Why?

Every situation will have a historical justification and rights to have to be defended.

Defending your interest, historical rights, civilization, way of living, freedom, everywhere, pre-emptive. That's how every war is started. People will absorb it.

And what about Queen Elizabeth Land? Which Right should we pick there?

I'm not against UK, the Falklands or Argentina. Just noticing the UK view on the matter is poorly understood by countries that are on the same side usually.

Many seem to somehow think in the case of the Falklands, the British kicked the Argentinian troops off and settled the place with their own nationals. Those are fully dependent on the UK and have the right for self determination. Engineered some say.
