MAINJAFAD,

Well said. Some realism at last.

Why not station a platoon of tanks on the Islands? And a battery of 105 or 155 field artillery? Deterrent effect
In the case of MTB's and 155mm. We don't have then down there for the same reason we didn't use them in 1982. The place is one massive Peat Bog that cannot support their weight. The Argies did deploy 155mm, but couldn't move them anywhere outside of Stanley.

A scenario. with cvil ships, no surprises, a few dozen trawlers, live on television from the day they leave the harbors, interviewing everybody onboard?

Send a Typhoon? The UN, Brazil and the US would be on the phone before it leaves the runway. A PR nightmare.

Maybe a 30 yr old like scenario is a irrealistic starting point.

Needless to say he was escorted in by a couple of F3's well before crossing the coast and was looking at the wrong end of a number of loaded L58A1's when he came to a halt.

81 mm L58A1 Infra-red Illuminating (IR) bomb (United Kingdom) - Jane's Ammunition Handbook

81 mm L58A1 Infra-red Illuminating (IR) bomb (United Kingdom), Mortars - 81 mm mortars

Development
The L58A1 infra-red illuminating mortar bomb was developed by BAE Systems Land Systems and is in current use with the British Army. In 2009 the British Army took delivery of approximately 30,000 L58A1 IR illuminating mortar bombs.

Description
The body of the bomb is of the extended, high-capacity type, and contains a IR illuminating candle supported by a parachute. The candle burn time is two minutes and at an altitude of 500 m illuminates an area 400 m in diameter. The primary cartridge is the L39A2 and up to six MK 4 L40A1 augmenting cartridges may be added. The bomb is ballistically matched to the L54A1 White Light Illuminating bomb. It uses a DM93 mechanical time fuze to ensure that it is deployed at an appropriate altitude.

Just what is the 'wrong end' of a para illum!!!

Biggus 13th Jan 2013 21:00

MAINJAFAD,

Based on some of your optimistic comments I would hazard your background is air defence, ground based...

I don't think this is the right place to debate some of your comments, but my own experience would suggest your glasses are somewhat rose tinted!

West Coast 13th Jan 2013 21:13

I hope the Argies are polite enough to invade on a day that suits the typhoons and the RAF's needs with regard to WX, mx, staffing, logistics and lord knows whatever else. A lot is riding on the backs of just a few jets in the scenario where they save the day.

keesje 13th Jan 2013 21:17

Better include the Braziliens also in the Shock and Awe strategy.

PressTV - Brazil backs Argentina over Malvinas

Makes everything more interesting.

Opps :yuk::yuk::yuk: Typo :ugh::ugh::ugh: I of course meant L85A1!!! Doh!!!:eek:

Hi

Keesje, are you a prolific beneficiary of you homelands somewhat liberal drug laws or did you emerge from underneath a bridge?:E

The repeated regurgitation of old news while ignoring counter point’s does nothing to support or indeed lend any credibility to your arguments.

Is MLRS air mobile?:E

Rob Courtney 13th Jan 2013 22:25

Welcome back Keesje, are you going to answer my last question now or just ignore it because it undermines your argument?

SilsoeSid 13th Jan 2013 22:26

Is MLRS air mobile? :E
We don't have any!

The Helpful Stacker 13th Jan 2013 22:37

What about GMLRS?

Aren't they used by 39 Regt RA?

glad rag 13th Jan 2013 22:42

???? GMLRS/MLRS..

that's me blown out then ;)

keesje 13th Jan 2013 22:46

Hi Deepsixteen,

I notice many folks imagine all kinds of successful militairy exchanges similar to 30, 70 yrs ago.

I think is a good thing to balance the expectations a bit by painting not so unlikely, far less glorious, even embarrasing scenarios.

Its seems Brazil and the USA do not support the UK position on the Falklands. I can imagine Russia and China will not be happy. India, nah.. Even Chile supports the Argentine position.

When the rest of the world just doesn't understand, better stop the rethorics and flagwaving and start finding some allies, I would think.

Hi Rob, welcome! What wAs the question again?

500N 13th Jan 2013 23:03

keesje

"better stop the rethorics and flagwaving and start finding some allies,
I would think."

Why, what are they going to do to help the UK ?

They are not going to get involved in any war in a military sense
so I wouldn't call them allies for that reason.

Obama is like a flip flop (thong), all rubber and no substance.

Brazil should keep it's nose out of it.

And where has Chile said it supports the Argies ?

Happy dancing people
A bunch of Spanish Nazi's intent on expanding their South American empire?

Sorry, but the colonists don't get my sympathy. There isn't much love for the white men around the rest of south America either.

Yes they are THS, in use by 39RA in Afghanistan;

Biggus

You would be correct in your guess of my original back-room boy employment (my username is a giveaway anyway). Most of what I wrote is based on what is here . I have no idea what CBFFI's battle plans are, but for what my part of it was last time I was down there, which I will not discuss either (but for the fact that I've had a personnel weapon issued every time and have zero'ed it on a range (first trip was the best, SLR and got qualified on the GPMG as well to do LLAD)). Also all of my fellow servicemen had access to personal weapons as well. OK, they are not line infantry, but they can man a defensive position, therefore there is more than just 120 armed squaddies defending the place if required. The rest of my comments are conjecture, but based on a sound knowledge of military history and tactics. I may have a rose tinned view, but that is based on the knowledge that the current kit is a damm sight more reliable than what was there in the past and a damm sight more capable. Argies on the other hand have gone backwards in a lot of respects.

Courtney, I'd say it's a realistic comment, Argies known they can't take the place without taking a kicking.

keesje. Chile supports Argentina??? Why does their national airline fly a scheduled A320 service from Punta Arenas to Mount Pleasant and back every weekend then?? It may not be on their route map. but go to their booking page and type in Punta Arenas (PUO) and Mount Pleasant (MPN) in depart and arrive and select a Saturday and you can book a ticket.

West Coast 14th Jan 2013 01:53

Chile supports Malvinas claim but underlines

There is at least an element of truth to keesje's claim. As to why the airline flies there, because they can make a profit would be my guess.
