But I take you point that the vast majority of the British public will be more interested in Britain’s got talent or dancing on ice.

Slow burning disaster
While from a military & security point of veiw I think the way the Nimrod project is being shutdown it is so wrong I have to take the stance that the UK PLC has not got the money to fund it.
The present Govenment is between a rock and a hard place when it comes to money, the reason for this is that the last Govenment spent large amounts of money that we simply did not have in an attempt to stay in power.
It is likely that they are quite pleased to have lost the election because it means they don't have to face the results of their overspending.
BAe and other defence contractors have also got to take some of the blame as overcharging in the sector is rife.
In short the current govenment is facing up to the dire situation that UK PLC is in and taking the only action that it can to put the UK back on a firm financal footing.
From a personal point of veiw I would like to see the Nimrods put into a mid-term storage program however the prospect of BAe turning this into a multi million pound project for which they would do very little makes me think very reluctently that cutting the wings (that BAe has so much trouble fitting)off is the least worst thing to do.

The point is that it has been funded. Scrapping the airframes follows on from DC's decision that the UK will do without any genuine MPA capability simply to save on the projected running costs.
When DC clamps down on tax avoidance (for example, around £ 4 Billion p.a. lost in tobacco duty due to black market sales) I may have more reason to believe your view that we have not got the money

Maybe if the countries we provide foreign aid to spent their own money on looking after their people then we wouldn't need to pay to look after their population for them!!

The biggest problem with being the guy in charge when money is tight is what to cut, nomater what you cut it will be some ones pet project.
Overseas aid is always seen as money going out and it is hard to see the return on the investment but I would think that there is in terms of trade and influence otherwise we would not be doing it.
As for the numbers quoted above I would like to know the sorce of these, I think it was Lincon who said there are lies, damm lies and statistics. Newspapers and govenment departments "cook" the numbers to make a case for the current political situation, at the moment I can't get my head around the numbers that the govenment is quoting for the propsed high speed railway between London & Birmingham.

Unless they put an overhead cover on the screen then it won't stop the newspapers getting a scoop by conducting overflights. I've just checked the NOTAMs and can't see any restrictions.

They haven't started cutting yet or, as someone else has suggested, the media aint interested.

I naturally thought you meant the press because not many spotters are going to get chopping pictures behind screens......unless they own a private plane or helicopter.

Sorry, maybe I should have been clearer.
I was anticipating pictures of the screens fully up, along with shots of vehicles moving to and from the area, disappearing out of sight, possibly the tops of vehicles, cranes, jib arms, etc, sticking up above the screen height, all generally accompanied by some text of outraged comments, etc, etc

Well the screen shielding the scrapping from the public accessible woods IS in place.
AVIATION NORTH-WEST - WOODFORD AERODROME
There are 2 cranes fitted with shears from Hills Cranes on site, these are parked out of site tho at the moment.
I wouldn't be surprised if the scrapping is done under darkness now the night shift has been put on days, no temporary lighting evident so perhaps not.
