Reasons why I want to join Emirates

Hi all,

Over the last six months or so I've been reading all the threads pertaining to EK with a keen interest. Most of the posts have been extremely negative and discouraging - and with good reason sometimes (other times it's just whining ). I thought that I'd put in my two cents worth and explain why I would like to join Emirates.

1) Pay - I currently fly the 777 and get paid the equivalent of 21600 DHS take home a month. From that salary, I have to support my family, pay for my cars, house, utilities etc etc etc - so more money at EK.

2) Inflation - Yes I know the inflation is high in the UAE - where I am it has been at a sustained 20%+ per annum (last month 22%). So, over six years.....well.....you're all smart enough to push the buttons on the calculator!

3) Health care - Where I work, I get a meager health cover. My family are covered for 66,000 DHS per year in-patient treatment and 1,700 DHS per year out-patient. This is for the whole family NOT per person . There is no dental coverage. So I pay $4500 a year to provide my family good medical cover.

4) Traffic - I know that traffic in Dubai can get heavy. Try this on for size though....I live 18kms from the airport and it takes me up to 3 hours each way. Nothing like doing a 9 hour red-eye and then sitting in traffic for 3 hours! I would love to be driven to and from work...ahh....bliss.

5) Schedule - I understand that there have been issues about scheduling of late at EK. Well, where I work I have never had more than 11 days off a month. I don't get to bid on anything, two days before the roster ends I get the next one. I would love 15 days off.

6) Education - I get no allowance for education, if you are like me and want the best for your kids then you want to send them to the best schools. Here that will set you back at least 65,700 DHS per kid per year.

7) Security - I can't over-emphasize this one and feel that I don't really have to elaborate. Needless to say, worrying about the safety of your family when you are overseas is no fun. Not to mention spending 2200 DHS a month on security...

8) Housing - No housing here and my housing allowance is 1700 DHS a month.

Well, there are many more small reasons but I think you guys get the picture. Everything is relative to what you're used to.

Take Care!
Cheers

As long as you have done your math .... it sounds like your doing it for all the right reasons.

Good Luck Kenuck

Habib, you still have to pay to support your family and cars, they give you a 70K 4 year interest free loan, which won't get bugger all these days. I hope you've done your maths.....

2) Inflation - Yes I know the inflation is high in the UAE - where I am it has been at a sustained 20%+ per annum (last month 22%). So, over six years.....well.....you're all smart enough to push the buttons on the calculator!
Well inflation here is nearer 30%, everyone knows the government figures here are false. They like only happy news.. get used to it!

Medical cover is one of the better things at EK, not always perfect, but not bad, inshallah.

Aaah, so you haven't been on Dubai's roads with one of our chauffeurs, almost as dangerous as doing it yourself after a quick IAH ULR flight... enjoy your bliss...

5) Schedule - I understand that there have been issues about scheduling of late at EK. Well, where I work I have never had more than 11 days off a month. I don't get to bid on anything, two days before the roster ends I get the next one. I would love 15 days off.
When you are away from home habibi, you need more days off to get back home for some sanity. The company have royally cheesed off a large part of their workforce, by this latest interference in the bidding. You won't get 15 days off any more either. 14 spread all over the month now, and thats a maximum. enjoy...

6)Education - I get no allowance for education, if you are like me and want the best for your kids then you want to send them to the best schools. Here that will set you back at least 65,700 DHS per kid per year.
Lots use this, some have to chip in their own money...

7) Security - I can't over-emphasize this one and feel that I don't really have to elaborate. Needless to say, worrying about the safety of your family when you are overseas is no fun. Not to mention spending 2200 DHS a month on security...
This place is pretty safe, but there have been in the short time i have been here, lots of incidents in Emirates villas, theft, attempted rape... just covered up nicely. Be realistic habib.

8) Housing - No housing here and my housing allowance is 1700 DHS a month.
There is a housing crisis here at the moment for more or less all new joiners. Allocated apartments are in sh**y areas of DXB. No villas will be available for at least 6 months (odd exceptions as people leave of course), guys being put up in the Harbour Hotel and Marriott Green community, which isn't bad, but is temporary. Company telling guys to delay bringing their famiies. Monster cock up!

Enjoy habibi!!

Yes Kenuck, the posts you read are invariably from the same people who tend to be negative as they let off steam. Several pilots from my previous company who started their aviation career in the RHS of a turboprop have now progressed (thru jet time with charter companies in the UK)to Capt's on the EK B777, and love every minute of it.

The expat life can be very difficult especially the clash of cultures on the roads here, when people who come from this part of the world will try and get in front of you at any cost. It is no good coming just for 2-3 years, 10-15 years should be your time target to experience the good, the bad and the ugly.

My sympathies on the crap palce you are working, but just 'cos yours is crapper does not make this one good. Reminds me of Monty Python.....

Man#1: Because we were poor! My old dad used to say to me: Money doesn't buy you happiness!
Man#4: Aye, he was right, I was happier then and I had nothing. We used to live in this tiny old house with great big holes in the roof.
Man#2: House! You were lucky to live in a house! We had to all live in one room, all twenty-six of us, no furniture, half the floor was missing, and were all huddled together in a corner for fear of falling!
Man#3: You were lucky to have a room! We used to 'ave to live in a corridor!
Man#1: Oh, we used to DREAM of living in a corridor. It would have been a palace to us. We used to have to live in an old water tank in a rubbish pit. We got woke up every morning by having a load of rotting fish dumped all over us! House! Huh!
Man#4: Well, when I say house, it was only a hole in the ground covered by a sheet of tarpaulin, but it was a house to us!
Man#2: We were evicted from our hole in the ground. We had to go and live in a lake!
Man#3: You were lucky to have a lake! There were a hundred and fifty of us, living in a shoebox in the middle of the road!
Man#1: Cardboard box?
Man#3: Aye!
Man#1: You were lucky. We lived for three months in a paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six in the morning, clean the paper bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down at the mill, fourteen hours a day, week in, week out, for sixpence a week, and when we got home, our dad would thrash us to sleep with his belt.

(slight pause)
Man#2: Luxury. We used to have to get out of the lake at six o'clock in the morning, clean the lake, eat a handful of damp gravel, work a twenty-hour day at the mill for tuppence a month, and when we got home, our dad would thrash us to sleep with a broken bottle, if we were lucky!
Man#3: Well, of course, we 'ad it tough! We used to have to get up out of the shoebox at twelve o'clock at night, and lick the road clean with our tongue. We 'ad two bits of cold gravel, and worked a twenty-four hour day at the mill for six or seventy-four years, and when we got home, our dad would slash it to us with a bread knife.
Man#4: Right. I had to get up at ten o'clock at night, half an hourbefore I went to bed, drink a cup of sulphuric acid, work twenty-nine hours a day down at the mill and pay the mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our mother and father would kill us and dance on our graves singing Halleluja.
Man#1: Aye, and you try telling young people of today that. And they won't believe you.
Man#4: Aye, they won't!

By my calculations, making some assumptions of course, you are on the losing end of things financially. Your medical/dental/housing/3 hour drives to and from work/never more than 11 days off a month must be putting a rather large dent in your savings? Sounds to me like your current job is pretty pathetic actually, no offense intended. 3 hours to drive 18kms? You might want to consider walking to work, it might be faster.

Come to EK, you will love it ! Based on your present situation this will be a dream place for you.

I truly hope you are exaggerating things a tad, because otherwise you should get the hell out of there. Best of luck.

Kenuck: Out of curiosity, where do you work? It sounds like about the world's crappiest 777 operator.

Hi,

SYB - I hope that this doesn't degenerate into a mud-slinging contest about who's more right or less wrong. I do appreciate all your points but like I said it's all relative. For example, 14 days off a month spread over the month is better than 8-10 days spread over the month right? About being realistic about security - a couple of years ago our house was broken into by gun-wielding thieves. Thankfully, they did not hurt my wife or kids. I, however, had my front 2 teeth knocked out as they smashed my head against the bathtub faucet. A couple of months ago during some civil strife my wife had her car stoned by a crazed mob. They broke the rear window and glass shattered all over my son seated in the rear. Luckily he escaped with a small cut only. In the last 3 years I personally know of 8 people who have been carjacked at gunpoint.....the list goes on and on - so I think I am being realistic. I understand that there is a housing problem but 6-8 months is a relatively short period of time in the grand scheme of things.

Mensaboy - I wish I were exaggerating but am truly not.

Warlock 2000 - These are the reasons that I want to come to emirates. Everyone has their own.

Malloy- If I get the job then I swear I'll tell you

Cheers All!

dear Kenuck,

a mate of mine left KQ to join EK 3-4 yrs ago and he reckons it was a mistake(career and money wise). Perhaps you should talk with the ex-KQ crowd over here.

For the rest, lets just say that his wife loves it here! The kids are always up for a trip to NBO and are eager to move back(so is my mate).

Careful what you wish for...

Kenuk,
If Northwest in the US flew 777s, I would swear you worked for them and based/live in Detroit.

Hey Kenuck,

You sound like you work for KQ. I have a friend who works for KQ and the package you described is exactly as he described it. The 3 hours sitting in the traffic and the burglaries and violence sounds like Nairobbery! Good Luck!

Kenuck, If you truly wanted to move to EK and were that happy about it, you wouldn't feel the need to waste your time making a post like that.

You're happy, good, but what gave you the impression that we all want to know about it.

I have a mate who for some years was a military recruiting officer. He made the observation one day that you could tell aspiring recruits anything and everything bad about the System - and they would only hear what they wanted to hear.

And then complain bitterly 12 months later about the very things he'd warned them about.

The first post proves how right he was...

Yeah, but at least he would have the wheat and rye. . . the only perk to being based in DTW. . . . .

For those of you considering Emirates

This thread is to those of you considering Emirates. I will tell you all of the things that EK fails to tell you in the interview process or on the website. I have been at EK in the neighborhood of a year and I left a pretty darn good company to come to the sand and deeply regret it. So there that is my disclosure. I will first tell you about EK then about DXB that you might not know.

Emirates has no work rules.
So that means when you do a MUS or a DOH turnaround you only get 1:50 pay. We have no mim day like 5 hours so we turned up for work for less than two hours pay. With all the long haul flying we do the short turnarounds are getting in the minority but they are still there and when you get one it sucks! We do not get paid for layovers. So we can go on a 9 (yes 9) day trip and only get 36 hours pay or so. After a 9 day trip you should be done for the month but not at Emirates. We also have 3 day layovers in TPI and TUN and we only get 12 hours pay for a 4-5 day trip. On the other hand we have a 24 hour layover in IAH after flying 17:30 and that is exhausting.

Emirates has no Union
I know a lot of pilots don't like unions but most of those pilots are the ones that probably jumped a senority list somewhere. Emirates is in deperate need of a union. Work rules and changes are implemanted unilaterally with no feedback or diolouge from the company. In straight forward words the company does whatever they want and 9 out of 10 times it is not in the pilots best interests. I take that back I can't think of a time when any item was in the pilots interests. If any item gets in the company's way in the short term they get a waiver from the GCAA and any item that gets in the company's way long term they just change the rule. No research, no talking it over, no problem. It is gone. Out of our hair.

Pay
Pay is really bad here. I know a lot of pilots come from some pretty crappy companies so EK seems like paradise but if you compare apples to apples Emirates does not even come close to measuring up. For you hard heads that is a B777 Captain at another airline compared with an EK B777 Captain. That is why we don't have hardly any BA, CX, AA, LH pilots here. The package just does not compete.

You can't swith fleets unless there is an act of GOD or Allah. The company does whatever it wants whenever it wants. The pilots have no say.

Nicely done... a very nice advertisement by Emirates Recruiting...
The target is now US pilots... no forex problems, pretty desperate, recession...company going bankrupt one after the other.. Yes come to Emirates..so we can get rid of those whining Australians, Canadian, European always complaining about something...especially money...and fore sure they will get rid of me.
Suggest you to join in August..around 50 degrees and 90 % umidity.but May June July September October pretty the same....and by the way, RP may be a little too.. radical but still....don't put the flag on your car....
Ah... when you'll be flying you better keep worrying cause some local speeding at 200kmh may hit your nice car ..with your nice family on it...and get away with that so easily..... you will be surprised...
By the way...pray also that the opposite doesn't happen..because than that we'll be even worst... You know Sharja.

Instead of building a stable work force in the long term they have decided to take the short term cheaper option of following the pilot market and going where they are cheapest.

The problem with this model is the lag in the system of recruiting and training. Get out of phase and the ramifications could hit EK hard.

In the meantime the message is given out that they will pursue the cheaper alternatives at the expense of losing the experienced pilots who built and continue to support EK so far. 'If you don't like it leave' may be the unwritten policy up until now but they should be careful what they wish for.

Losing experience in a rapidly expanding environment replacing it with much less experience will only led one way and it isn't up.

Kenuck,

You want to join EK to get out of Nairobi. (Can't say I blame you.)

That's it - all the rest is irrelevant.
