She wants EK he Doesn't

Can you guys help my mate out.
Currently a Captain £100000 pa (UK Charter) plus 20% pension of which employee contributes 5%. Loss of licence. Medical. Good routes/slips/aircraft and happy in his job and also very senior though not in age!!
His wife wants to move to EK for lifestyle change, private schooling, sunshine and better way of life away from scummy UK.
Not his scene to *iss on other F/Os to join as a DEC however that aside whos right. Mr or Mrs?? One worders are fine and a small explanation for them either way would be great. Ta

To move to Dubai for lifestyle would be a grave mistake. Many of us who moved here now realise that life in UK wasn't so bad after all. Traffic is a huge problem here and on days off there is only so many times you can go to the mall. Theatres, museums not to mention a sunday roast at a country pub are not available here

If mommy wants sunshine, then Greece and Spain are great during the summer. Without the high temps plus humidity. And sand my friend, plenty of sand. As for the 100,000 pound sterling salary? He can kiss that goodbye. 720,000 Dhs (100,000) = 60,000 Dhs p.m. I've clocked 13 years and entering my tenth year on Captains Salary with EK and in May my new and improved salary HA HA HA will be as follows:
Basic 41200
TRI 5800 New instructors pay to be announced. Not holding my breath.
ERP 3000
Flt pay 3000 assuming 40 hrs block time, rest of the time in the sim.
Prov. Fund 6200 15% 0f basic (6180 to be exact)

equals 58200 pm.

Schooling subsidised. Company accomodation provided, otherwise nobody would be here.

Housing allowance =10,500 pm. a Joke!

...'His wife wants to move to EK for lifestyle change, private schooling, sunshine and better way of life away from scummy UK.'

Tell him to leave his wife!

Or: Send her down, stay a few weeks in June/July/Aug...loads of sunshine. Try to get into a school of your choice while you're here. Rent the biggest 4 x 4 possible with as many airbags and impact protectors while you drive around the wonderful lifestyle that awaits, oh & talk to some of the pilots here about scummy EK...

Move here on the Ts & Cs your have now? You'd lose your medical due to insanity. MHO.

To leave what you say you have now.....uh, in a word...no. And I am one of the content ones here. If what you have is job security, uh, stay. If your carrier looks to go T.U., then come and enjoy the sand. I have been stuck in traffic coming from LGW into downtown London in the mornings, and it isn't as frustrating as the crazies on the road here. Am I content here, yes..... but everything is situational, and it appears you have, at the present, a pretty good gig. Some advice, as in above. Come for a little vacation in the middle of June or July and do some driving around, say, 1500 or so in the afternoon. She will beg for some overcast skies and a bit of drizzle.

Well, not too shabby then considering he'll be losing over 40% of his salary in tax and national insurance as opposed to your.............um............0%. QED! T.Uniform puts it nicely though!

Hi Gino,
tell your mate to stay where he is because he's very lucky with those TC. I can't agree more with all the comments of the other guys so far: bad traffic, high cost of living, degrading security and not to mention undesired attentions that our madames get from the men with the 'wobbling heads' on a daily basis make the overall picture not attractive at all.
If the wife really likes this place then he has to promise her they will come down once a year during the winter for the shopping festival..but believe me not more than that

Yes, 40% tax is a lot of money I agree. That leaves him with about 60,000 sterling.

He probably lives in his own house, yes that he pays for. But at the end of the day it's his! With lots of nice sterling equity in it as well!

Plus a healthcare system that will take care of him and the missus in those golden years to come and a pension.

Please tell me know, with my tax free salary? What pension fund and medical care are we going to look forward to when we leave EK? Allow me to tell you.

You have to pay for it yourself. You have to provide for your own pension and while you are at it, pay for your house or investment property yourself, so that you can have some shillings at the end of the day.

So why go through all of this, to achieve what? Live in Dubai? HA HA HA.
And when you're at home, remember you are king! When you are a guest, you will always be nothing more than exactly that!

60,000 pounds sterling after tax equates to about 10,000 US a month. How much more will he earn coming here as a DEC? Not much! So whats the point of coming to earn the same that you already earn back home, as a king. Not a guest worker!!

AS ALWAYS

Also note that it is not a flat rate 40% tax in the UK. His take-home will be in excess of £60,000. Even with NI and other deductions but he will definately take a pay drop coming here.

It is also a fallacy that there is no tax here... it gets you indirectly. Also note that inflation in the UK <5%... here 28% according to new figures.
Also planned: road tolls, income tax, VAT. So if he thinks he'll avoid paying anything he'll be mistaken.

His decision but he'll be passing many on the way back to the UK & EU for the same reasons his nagger wants to come here...

Those coming are mainly from the $ based economies where it makes more sense to come. Now that the pioneers from the US have survived a few years and others have realised that the UAE isn't actually within range of Iraq more are getting brave and swapping their DC9s for 777s. They have less to lose than your 'mate' ... he however stands to lose a great deal.

He doesn't HAVE to sell his house when he comes to Dubai. He could do what many of us do and get someone to pay his mortgage while EK provides his villa. That's a big amount of extra cash in HIS pocket. The equity stays in the house regardless of the country you live in! And yes, tolls are coming...........as they are in UK. And then there's tax on car insurance, road tax, cost of petrol, Cars themselves 20-40% more, tax on personal health schemes,VAT, yet more tax on the savings you may be left with after paying your 40% and it goes on. 3 years ago it cost over £8 just to take my son swimming for an hour. An hour! Jeeze, not much more than that gets a months EPC membership. When Brown makes it to No.10, it WILL get worse. Hard to believe I know. As regards to national pension, retire back in UK and avail of the deteriorating health service. Or claim your state pension abroad. If it's still going by then!

I know guys are pissed off here but whichever way I do the sums, There is always more going into the piggy bank here than there ever was in UK.
Keep the UK investments looking after themselves and balance with Dollar pay/investments here. It may be weak now but historically it will come back.

Also, not planning to use Provident fund as full pension but in addition to other investments. Unlike money purchase schemes in UK, the fund provides a cash payment. A sum which is not then reduced instantly to a mere 7% of its value ( if your lucky) and drip fed every year. And when you snuff it before the missus, she then get's only half. Disgusting rip off. People who don't use the C fund and complain about it's performance while out on their boats or spending 700 dhs a go every Friday brunch should look at their priorities.

Having said all that, 100k and a final salary pension with a secure Charter Company is a good deal and he needs to think long and hard. Just his Wife wanting it could be a recipe for disaster. The interview may well pick that up and make the decision for him.

Hi Bymonek.

I agree with all your statements. Life in the UK is not getting any cheaper.
Pretty much the same everywhere.

For me it's now living in dubai that's affecting my life. This place has really gotten to me after 13 years. And I know that my time here is on short finals..
Unless EK comes up with a commuting or basing scenario? I will leave. But that's me! My family are happy to leave as well.

Cheers

Check Six.

Just to add to BYMONEK's points, if you are a high bracket tax payer in the UK, you are subject to a total of 72% overall taxation (FT's figures not mine) when you take into account indirect taxation such as VAT, duty on fuel, car tax, and council tax etc etc.

And to say that the NHS will look after you in your 'golden years' is pure fantasy! Remind me to tell my 87 year old grand mother who has been waiting for a hip replacement for over 19 months, and is in so much pain that the family has clubbed together to pay for a BUPA op!!!!!!!!!!

And don't even get me started on the 'Chav'/Drug/Gangland society that now prevails in what was once a country I was proud of...........Just read the Daily Mail once a month to remind yourselves why you left the UK in the first place!! (or just walk down Crawley high street to view the splendour of the lowlife dross that inhabits most of the country now!)

Fair comment, the Taj Mahal does do a good 'Ruby' and due to the high price of said curry, you don't get too much dross frequenting the establishment!!

I send my misses for a month to HK at the time when she thought it was great for me to join a HK operator This was for a job with better terms than EK's! After week two, without me being there, and she staying at a friends nice appartment the holiday feeling was wearing of quickly and we stayed where were I was
Suggest the same rent / steal or borrow an appartment or house in Dubai for a month and you be away for most of the period like you are on tour
Good luck
