Question This IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) is slowly killing me!

Or you should baybe read the title as "How do you manage to keep on doing what you do, in the face of IBS".

I do have a good week or so followed by a hell during a few days, and on and on it goes. Any good ideas very much appreciated...

I am just reading a book on the benefits of Aloe Vera, the medicine plant. I have no personal experience with Aloe Vera but the book, written by a GP, claims that it can help with a variety of digestive probems, including IBS.

I suffer from mild digestive problems as a side effect from other medication so I am going to try it.

I have had IBS for the past five years and like many conditions, it does not give a hoot what your profession is ,was,or desire. The condition is intolerant to stress....what that level of stress may be is a personal thing. Flare ups are frequent, cyclic to days when one feels the world is a wonderful place High fibre for me is a definite no no along with curries, eggs, too much bread and certain veg. I tolerate well, rice, regular drinks of water. After the last colonoscopy I was advised to take a powder each evening called Lepicol which is Psyllium husk and probiotic cultures. For me ..it works. I can get away with a glass or two of my favourite spirit tipple....but,.....go to far and the gut lets me know. Exercise plays an inportant part of self treatment. I would also add this as I apply to myself,... its not a condition which will attract any pioneering intervention. I take the stance,"once diagnosed...you have it...get on with it". There is no magic pill or wonder drug although, once whilst in a bad bout of the condition I had cause to visit my GP for another problem. He prescribed a short course of a corticosteroid for a very painful shoulder. The IBS stopped within a matter of days! Flying for me (as a passenger) means considerable preperation of a couple of days low food intake, Imodium on the day of travel and two days of stomach cramps after arrival. Hence,I love cruising. Its not the limited cubicles of WC in flight but those damned silly people who insist on pushing a stupid aisle blocking trolley up and down for the duration of the trip. Lastly, start making your list of the food your gut likes and does not like ASAP.

Simon10, has your doctor done any testing to rule out Coeliac Disease?
Sometimes coeliac disease can be mis-diagnosed as IBS or vice-versa as the symptoms can be very similar.

If he has ruled it out, good stuff. If not, suggest a blood test for starters, then an endoscopy if the blood test results show that it is warranted.

My sister was diagnosed as a coeliac 5 years ago, at the age of 28. The family were advised to get a blood test to rule it out, although the blood test results are not always conclusive.

I don't know much about this condition, but I take a product called 5-lac to help with my digestion. It is a sachet of powder that you drink dissolved in a little water and it contains all kinds of "good bacteria". It is a lot better than these drinks that you can buy so I'm told (cheaper, less sugar, much higher concentration of pro-biotics etc.)

Keeps my (othewise slow) sytem working.

Somebody told me that peppermint was good for IBS....you can buy tablets or drink peppermint tea. Fennel tea is meant to be good too and it tastes quite nice. If you try these teas, try to get the Twinings ones...they seem stronger and better than others I have tried.

Thanx for your replies.

Today I took a F-Calprotectin test (third time) which indicates strongly and Inflammatory process going on in the bowels, something which was not indicated on the two earlier tests. This indicates that I may suffer from Chrons or Colitis, of course I am very sad and realize that if I thought that IBS was hard to cope with, hey - what will I be thinking of IBD???

A sad day for Simon10

And the next day I insisted on taking the test again, and then It showed no sign of inflammatory process going on... what should I belive, and which test to trust??? This sucks really.

I was diagnosed over 10yrs ago with IBS. The doctors werent helpful in the slightest in pointing out what the problem could be.

Avoiding all aspects of dairy (inc eggs) has dramatically improved my situation. Its hard to do at first but once you look into things and get your shopping routine going it soon becomes easy - especially today as food stuffs have much better labelling.

The problem is now though that if I touch the slightest bit of dairy I know about it and a normal portion of something dairy results in IBS rearing its head up to 3 days later.

It is believed that the Dairy/Eggs things results from gluten clogging and disrupting parts of the bowel that would normally digest this foodstuff.

Interestingly humans are the only mammals post infancy that deliberately choose to continue consuming dairy products.

I met a guy once that didn't eat Dairy (it came about because I was putting orange juice on my cereal!) - when I asked why he stated it was to avoid the radioactive contamination that the hill sheep have from Chernobyl fallout - maybe hes right and maybe thats why our bodies, in greater numbers than ever before, are choosing to reject this foodstuff.

Hi, my wife suffered from IBS for many years and this was then joined by constant headaches, sleepless nights, hot flushes etc associated with the menopause. On a friends advise she started taking 4ml a day of a stablilised aloe vera gel. End result = complete removal of symptoms although it returns if she stops taking the gel.

If you want more info then PM me and i'll be glad to let her tell you all about it.
