Irish medical

Hi there, I'm due to attend my first class 1 medical in Dublin next week. If I get the medical done in Ireland, can I train in UK, US, Spain etc? Or do I have to get the medical done in the country where I want to do the training?

Thanks

You generally need to have a medical in the country that you are doing the training. However some countries will 'validate' a medical from another countries. I'm pretty sure the US will issue an FAA class 1 medical on the basis of a UK class 1 etc. Am not 100% rho. The best bet is to ask the authority of the country that you wish to train in.

I would have thought that a medical cert issued in a JAR country would be accepted by any of the member JAR states, without the additional need to have it revalidated.

Technically this is the case, however many JAA member states selectively choose the rules to follow or not. The CAA is generally very good. They will accept a medical from JAA states, other states (Spain and Germany for sure) won't accept another state and will ask you to sit their medical.

I have Irish medical and in the proces off getting a CAA one.

Yes, you need the countries medical in order to train there. If you want to to train in the UK you will need UK-CAA Class 1. Your Irish Class 1 can be converted WITHOUT any further medical examination by CAA. Unless you have failed at the CAA before, you should have no problem what so ever.

If you want an FAA class 1 in Dublin you can go to Doc. Killeen. He's a long standing FAA medical examiner.

Hey corsair, who's Doc. Killeen?

If I get an Irish Class 1 can I get that converted to an FAA class 1 without having to do another medical exam?

FAA Class 1

You can get a class 1 from Doc Killeen but you will have to sit the medical. It's very straight forward especially if you already have the IAA class 1 (no lab tests, vision etc.) but it will cost you approx. €100.

Have you an email address or contact number for the FAA examiner in Dublin?

Dr Killeens rooms are somewhere in Dublin city centre. Not much help, say you! I guess if you check the Dublin yellow pages the contact details are there?

I think, could be wrong, that Doc Kileen is based in Mountjoy Square, Dublin. Could be sharing a practice, as there are quite a few Docs in that area. Worth a try.

Dr Killeen is the AME I use, He is a decent chap. Very helpful and a Pilot himself.

http://www.mountjoyfamilypractice.com/

He does FAA medicals of all classes and JAA medicals to Class 2, he can advise you on your chances of getting a class one as he has a lot of experience in this area.

Regards

Lionel

I just made an enquiry about getting a FAA class one medical in Dublin and now I’m a bit confused. Firstly the FAA class 1 medical only cost €130 - €180 depending on weather you have an ECG. Now compared to a JAA class 1 medical of €604 what’s the catch, why such a huge difference in price. Secondly the FAA class 1 medical only takes one hour to complete whereas the JAA takes 6 hours.

Is there something I’m missing here? I definitely asked for a class 1.

Anyone able to help?

Not of last week anyway. I asked the nurse if the IAA were going to drop the EEG since the CAA had dropped it and she heard nothing about it. She even said that the EEG was an important test for pilots.

Slightly off the point by might be of interest to anybody that does have a JAR medical revalidated by another member state. On each renewnal ask the new authority to copy the original issuing authority in on the findings. This keeps you valid in that country also. Should the need arise to return to the original counrty then you have a valid medical there waiting for you.

keep flying and keep fit!
