Sally - I must say that I'm now slightly scared of you although I agree with the 'threat'.

Vortex thing - Although I agree with your initial comments:

Some of the best pilots I have ever flown with were women, on my army pilots course the top pilot, quite deservedly, was a woman, (the only woman).

Don't get me wrong I have flown with and seen fly some low grade pilots both male and female but to come up with an all encompassing comment like the one above is at the least narrow minded and at worst biggoted.

One cannot refute the vast body of scientific research which shows gender differences exist.

Females are less able on tasks involving spatial reasoning (parallel parking) and physical coordination (throwing a ball).

Rather obviously the range of abilities for individuals far exceeds the mean.

Personally I find the evolutionary causes, that result in male and female brains being wired differently, to be a fascinating subject.

Was also down at CTC on the 1st September and didn't get through, am most peed-off but am not giving up yet. although I have to say I will be waiting a little while before re-aplying, just to let the bank balance creep back up into the black! Still Badgering them for feedback.

I was surprised at the number of candidates there who did not have A-levels or degrees, somthing that I believed was a requirment of the scheme? No use in complaining though.

Yes I was a bit surprised but I knew that you only needed A levels or an equivalent qualification.

There also seemed to be a wide range in flying experience with one guy I spoke to having nearly 100hrs and others none at all..

It would be interesting to know how many people got thru to the interview stages and when they are..

A friend of mine is out in NZ at the moment on the scheme and is enjoying it, although its hard work obviously..

I think I'll wait to see how I did in the tests and discussion before I reapply, £165 is a lot of money and means ive got a few quiet weekends coming my way!

What do you guys mean when you say that you'll leave it a while before you reapply? I was under the impression that reapplication was by invitation only.
Is this no longer the case?

No problems Rod, and I was just joking about you being Rod Wren - of course Rod Wren wouldn't come on PPRuNe defending CTC McAlpine. I am sure he has better things to do. And even if he were to surf PPRuNe I am sure he wouldn't use the handle Rod Eddington. Far too obvious. It looks as though our difference of opinion comes down to the cost, to CTC McAlpine, of the course. You believe it costs £100k, I don't.

Sally, I guess the same goes for you too. Although, I do suggest that you calm down a little. I am not "slagging the mouth that didn't feed me" - do you mean "slagging (or even biting?) the hand that didn't feed me" by any chance? Or are you suggesting that CTC staff re-gurgitate food into the mouths of successful applicants?! I hope you realise that was an attempt at humour, not slagging. Anyway, no, I am not putting CTC down, I am merely trying to highlight exactly what they are and are not offering and risking.

I said that if you don't make the grade for CTC then this doesn't mean you aren't good enough. Do you agree? Or do you have so much faith in the CTC McAlpine selection procedure that you are going to go back to your previous career?

Hello,

can anyone tell me on what dates they are holding the stage 2 selection in the months Oct, Nov and Dec 2003.

Also, are they quite flexible or helpful in terms of availability of dates or do they just give you a date to attend and expect you to turn up.

In the email inviting you to stage two ctc will specify the next available date for testing, however they also mention if you can't make the date specified that you can contact them and arrange to attend at a later date. My advice, for what its worth (not much as i got PFO'd :{ ) would be unless you have a really urgent reason to be somewhere else, go on the date they invite you to attend, if you defer it, you could be waiting ages.

yeah when i went for testing i was the only girl and felt a bit intimidated! never been to a selection before and most other people had and had some flying experience. felt a bit intimidated and just made me more nervous i think.

I have 1200hrs in the bush of australia. I alsoi have a UK passport. Can I enrol in one of these CTC programs? And what does CTC stand for?

£120k for BA cadet training?

How does it cost £120k to train a BA cadet?

I trained alongside BA cadets at Oxford (in 2000 - 2001). I paid the full Oxford rack rate of £47K. I can only guess that the massive bulk discount rate would be £35k to £40K.

The currect price (CTC) of CPL/IR to first line flight is £23k. Shall we say it costs £20K?

So we have £60K so far (or £70K full retail price for one person).

What do they spend the additional £60K on? Practice cheeseboards?

BA's figures, not mine. I guess the cost includes type rating and JOC. They also paid for stuff like class 1 and another in-house medical and the selection process was free. It all adds up. Don't really know the exact breakdown of the £120k but that's what they've always said it costs them per cadet. And I beleive them - don't exactly see why they'd need to lie about it.

They are being extremely flexible with dates for me, I applied ages and ages ago and was supposed to go down for stage 2 months ago. I couldnt go becuase of exams, they actually rang me and asked when I was available, I said I did'nt know.

The way it has been left is that I get in contact with Mary Brown by e-mail and let her know when Im free and she will try and fit me in.

So Im only going to get in contact again when I feel Im ready for selection, i.e. have got my Maths in order etc..

Very flexible in my opinion

This is very true. I got through to Dibden way back in March however they scheduled my attendance date with the end of my degree course. So I went down there in July. Sadly I won't be going back again.....

Nobody should worry about dates and availability though, the CTC guys are very helpful and flexible on this.

Priorities
 
I have a mate who went out to NZ recently on the cadet scheme. He tells me that the earlier courses are struggling with module 2 of their ATPLs. Not surprising seeing as they seem to spend most of their time playing computer games and they wonder why they are behind schedule! What idiots. Having jumped all the hurdles to get on the course, they'd rather spend their £60k playing computer games than to do well in their training?!

If I get through the selection process (stage 3 soon), I'd make sure I work my butt off to achieve my dream. It's only a year or so of hard work afterall. Seems these guys just don't have their priorities right and they don't know how privileged they are. What a waste.

I can't comment on your 'news' but they would not be the first. When I trained alongside several CTC cadets on my initial type rating course on the 757, 2 of the guys failed the sim and were sent home half way through. This was not the sponsorship deal but the ATP Scheme. One of them took his laptop with him and spent most of his time on it (according to his sim partner) and the other could be seen most days by the pool........:rolleyes: I kid you not.

I've got a mate who got through and is on one of the early courses. he hasn't done his exams yet, but told me that the first courses have achieved a 100% first time pass rate with an average mark of over 90%. I don't know if that is just the first module, but those are pretty cool results by anyone's measure! If they can achieve that while playing computer games I begin to see why I wasn't selected. :ooh:

Maybe Alex Whittingham will know if they are slacking.
