PinkPilot13,

Thank you for your feedback

I'll be more specific for you

Do you as someone who has worked in Talent Acquisition for 15 years including within EK think that meeting up the night before with other candidates in order, and I quote "to get to know each other for the group excercise part of the interview" is a wise thing to do. You call this networking. Would you as a person responsible for recruitment encourage candidates to contact other candidates to do the same thing the night before a selection process involving a group exercise. Do you think it's fair on all candidates to do this. If you knew that some candidates organised to get together the night before in order to get to know each better for the group exercise, would you be happy.

You think Aer Lingus would be happy to know this. I did not think so. They want to see the candidates at the assessment meeting other candidates for the first time. not after an evening together to get to know each other for the group excercise part of the interview

Where did I mention "not social recluses squirreled away in their rooms prior to assessments!"

I always thought a group exercise was to see how you interact with people you have to work with who you have never met before, like when a First Officer meets a Captain for the first time and vice versa. CRM, teamwork, leadership, thinking outside the box etc.

There is only a handful of places on offer and I know for sure, I would be keeping a low profile the night before in a bar socialising with locals, not my competitors. And you may think this is being harsh. Remember, only a handful of positions on offer. You fail, you fail.

Regarding what do I know. I have seen training and test situations where the crew knew each other very well. This lead them to dropping their guard and behaving in a way that was not suitable for the event. I.e. they spoke in a way that was not suitable for the situation and gave the impression of bad CRM. I am guessing that if these Aer Lingus candidates met the night before to get to know each other better for the group exercise, they may drop their guard and behave in a manner that Aer Lingus may take the wrong way. Me, I would not risk it. If I met anyone the night before, yes I would have plenty of beers but under no circumstances would I discuss the selection process at all especially the group exercise. To be honest, I would rather not meet any other candidates until on the day. PinkPilot13, do you get where I'm coming from. So please do let me know your views on my questions to you as you seem to be experienced on this subject.

Yes, networking can only bring success when done in the correct way

Hi,

Group sessions are to asses various social & interactional traits. You do not have to be meeting for the first time...

No assessor is going to have any issues with you meeting the night before, we used to expect people to have I met over breakfast etc. The ultimate aim for an assessment process is for everyone to be as relaxed as possible. Besides, you can’t possibly predict which group you will be placed in to prepare any kind of outcome!

Just go steady on the beers the night before, I’d suggest no more than 1 max 😊

on one side is bad as more waiting and means there is high competition here ,,, beyond our imagination...on the other hand waiting is better than a "no ,not this year pal" email......so lets just chill and...wait....good luck to us all !

It’s strange. EI never really entered by thoughts previously, and indeed I have opportunities to pursue elsewhere, but having done the assessments and all this waiting it’s making me want it more and more! I’m also in the “no call no email” camp. I think my video interview was a bit naff so wouldn’t be surprised if I don’t make the grade. With the competition the standards are understandably high.

Hi Imayo! thanks for sharing this.

Doesn't this sound odd for you? At this stage, I would be expecting the HR team to have a general idea on how to divide the groups of cadets to be interviewed (for instance, in July the TOP performers, in August the "Middle pool" and in September "the spare wheels" :D or Are they seriously catching up with the applications? It does not sound realistic to me....

I have not received the email yet, but I guess we will not get it until the cadets are chosen and the contracts signed off.....

ps apologies for any grammar mistake

TandO 4th Jul 2018 17:51

Has anyone had an actual rejction email as on confirmed.

04jharrison 4th Jul 2018 18:25

Got my rejection email today! Can’t say I’m surprised, it was my first application and my interview section was horrendous! Good luck to all those who made it! Hopefully I’ll be joining you in the air soon, though it’s looking like I’ll need a hefty loan to do it!

This even happens during training and checks

I would strong advise you to not meet others prior to doing a group exercise for a selection with an airline.

Those who will be conducting the selection will assume you're all meeting for the first time and your behaviour will be accessed on that.

If you think differently, crack on and good luck.

Bit rude tbh, sharing your opinion is one thing, demanding it be accepted as fact is another. I done a very similar selection process when I joined the Royal Navy as an officer and we were actively encouraged to meet the other candidates the night before. It will do you no harm at all if you chose to meet others or if you decide to sit in your room by yourself, as long as you have prepared as best you can. Given the nature of pilot selection it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility some people will have met before anyway. Don’t over think it. Act naturally and be calm. No one is checking whether you speak first/ last etc. They want to see active participation and someone who can be considerate as a team member but not shrink into the background and be dragged along.

K13 4th Jul 2018 19:24

Reassuring that they're still going through applications, the radio silence hopefully means they haven't got to mines yet. Here's to blind optimism!

Lawrence2725 4th Jul 2018 19:38

Given that the first assessment day is only 12 days away now, I do find it odd that AL haven't contacted everyone with an outcome (despite the volume of applications). If one were to be invited to the assessment centre on the 16th July, that is a very short turnaround for booking flights, accommodation and getting the time off work (unless you pull a sickie).

Haven't heard back yet, still holding onto some hope. There will be more opportunities though!

Air2000 4th Jul 2018 23:45

Exactly! This is a fantastic opportunity, but it won't be the last opportunity - if it doesn't work out this time, they'll (probably, going by AL track record) run the programme again next year. Those of us who do get the PFO email shouldn't wallow, but acknowledge it as a learning experience and use the time between opportunities to brush up on soft skills, aviation knowledge, maths & physics etc. so you're better prepared for the next one.

Personally, i haven't heard back yet either and even if they did call me up now, I think it's too late for me to change plans. Currently living in Melbourne but moving back to the UK at the end of the month, if they called me up for assessment on the 16th it would take some serious consideration and money to actually go along now. Can only hope they learn from this experience and improve their timings for next year.

Sararh 5th Jul 2018 10:45

Just had my call, don't give up hope! They've still got a bunch to get through.

EIFlyer 5th Jul 2018 13:05
