it is heartening to see full support from the company in backing the crew actions in the preliminary stages
Do you think the company would write, "Looks like they screwed it up and evacuated for no reason, but, until the investigation is complete, we will not know for sure?"
Heartening?

My point is the company is saying all the right things, and backing the crew actions, it would be nice if the colleagues did also, instead of Monday Morning Quarter backing the crew, which is disheartening IMHO.
However you seem to have missed the the main thrust of the post which was Mr Cedars bad idea of leaving the Flight Deck on a 2 crew airplane with an upper deck with smoke and a strong smell. It may work for a 737 or A320 but not in this circumstance...and at the end of the day we do not know what the crew did, maybe they did go back and still decide to evacuate.

Cyril,
I would expect the company to do nothing OTHER than say "all the right things" and "back the crew" and I would expect nothing other than Monday Morning Quarterbacking from PPRuNe. People love to vent their frustrations here. If you expect anything else you are naive.
When have you EVER seen the company NOT back the actions of the crew? Did you ever see any public repudiation of the crew who went around in HKG and almost stalled and hit Lantau Island because the autopilot wasn't on an nobody noticed? Of course not, because if the company DID, it would bring disrepute to its training abilities.
If it turns out that the crew's actions were proper, justified and in accordance with SOPs, the company will proudly make the world aware of that fact. If it turns out otherwise, no one except company insiders will ever know.

Agreed that the order to evacuate is the hardest decision a captain has to make, anticipating injuries on the inflatable slides, explanation to the authorities, reporting to the company and the press hungry for the gory details. Not a good day.
I suggest CX might start to make a bit of money suing the pax evacuating with bags. Looking at the photo blog in post #18, isn't that a CC trying to tackle an offending pax with an armlock ? Another CC is bent over the taxiway picking up FOD left by pax as evidence for a future law suit. Well done, girls.

Maybe you missed THIS photo AFP: Nine hurt as Cathay aborts takeoff in Shanghai showing a man sliding down with at least TWO items of hand-carry baggage while the other passengers wait at the top of the slide, clearly accompanied by their carry-on items!
What happened to, "Jump and slide, two at a time?"

Might be worth prosecuting a few of the bag carriers with a lot of press in order to get the message across.

a..)
That's Pieman Sarry's job.
b..) the crew do not have hours to nit pick about this or that like some of you are. It's a decision made with the available info at that time. When in doubt, there is no doubt, and for the avoidance of doubt, the EMERGENCY SLIDES are preferred to a normal deplaning.
Do not second guess him...none of us were there.

Hey N1,
How about posting the Mystery Aircraft's:
minimum airspeed,
maximum pitch angle, and
maximum bank angle
during the "go-around" and we'll continue the discussion.
